HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-02-06 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD FEBRUARY 06, 1989 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7: 10 P.M. , Monday, February 06, 1989, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien (alternate), Messrs. Ron Henson, Richard McNeese, Leon Hogg and Jerry Robinson (alternate). Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Park Direc- tor; Lynn Shackelford, Director of Administrative Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Jerry Robinson. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were Messrs. Jerry Crane, Jimmy Beck and Sonny Gonzalez. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated January 09, 1989 were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS Mr. Leon Hogg reported that Highway 10 had 50 volunteer hours, which brought the total volunteer hours for 1988 to 10,008 hours, for a savings (at $5.00 per hour) of $50,040.00. Since our program began in 1985 our total amount of dollar value to the city is $100,951.00 through 1988. For the month of January, Highway 10 had 48 volunteer hours, and BEE Committee had 296 hours, a total of 344 hours, with a savings of $1,720.00. Mrs. Helen Lightbody, liaison for McCormick Park and Villages of Bear Creek, reported that there was very little activity at either park. Mr. Richard McNeese reported that his areas of responsibility are Midway Park and Blessing Branch. There was very little activity at either park, but the parks are well maintained. Park and Recreation Board meeting Minutes February 06, 1989 Page Two Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh reported that we have applied to the Stephens Equipment Sports Company to sponsor us once again in the Gold Medal Awards Program. Mrs. Julia Wakeley stated that we have heard from Stephens Equipment Sports Company and they have agreed to sponsor us in 1989. Mrs. Saleh further reported that the Mid-Cities News had an interesting article about the new recreation center. The Special Event for February is the Little Ladies Tea Party(the 10th, at 2:00 p.m. ) at J. A. Carr Park, Mrs. Helen Lightbody will be the sponsor attending the event. Mr. Ron Henson, liaison for Westpark and Wilshire reported that the times he had been by, there was very little activity due to the weather. Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien, liaison for J. A. Carr Park reported that the park is in great shape, and the joggers are all pleased with the new surface on the jogging trail. She commended Mr. Rick Herold on the new playground equipment and the excellent choice of the area at which it was installed. She also commended Rick on the new sign at Bear Creek. Mr. Ron Henson made mention that he had heard some very good comments concerning the new surface on the walking trail at Bear Creek. Mr. Herold replied that it was left over limestone from the Carr Park project, the trail is exactly a quarter mile at Bear Creek. Mr. Jerry Robinson commented that his areas had been reviewed in others reports. Mr. Marland Ernest, liaison for Van Riet and Del Norte, reported that there was a good ground coverage(Winter Rye) at Van Riet(just like Spring time), but no activity at either park. Messrs. Leon Hogg, Richard McNeese and Jerry Robinson attended the Sports Association meeting in January. TREE BOARD REPORT Mr. Ron Henson reported on the updated expenses through January. Expenditures for the year-to-date is an excess of $15,000.00. Mr. Henson stated that at this rate we will exceed our amount needed to be recertified. NEW BUSINESS I. INPUT FROM DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES Mr. Lynn Shackelford gave a brief progress report on the new recreation center and the swimming pool at Midway Park. PARK DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold introduced two of the Park Department employees: Jerry Crane, General Foreman and Jimmy Beck, Horticulturist. Jerry is highly respected by the employees in the department. He was also instrumental in the production of the Bear Creek sign and many other park projects. Jimmy is in school finishing his Horticulture degree at TCJC. He is responsible for and very dedicated to maintenance of the flower beds (focal points) in the city. Jimmy Beck gave a report on the problems of mistletoe in the trees in our parks. He gave some helpful hints on how to remove the mistletoe and further maintenance of the trees. Mr. Herold announced that on April 29th, they will be hosting the first, Mid- Cities How to Grow Lawn and Garden Show. He invited all of the Board members to this special gala. It is being held at the City Hall Complex and in the gym. III. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported the attendance for the month of January was: Gym 3,875, Ruth Millican Center 973 and Simmons Center 571 for a total of 5,419. The attendance for January 1988 was: Gym 3,612, Ruth Millican Center 704 and Simmons Center 460 for a total of 4,776. We did schedule in our program for a Limo Race, "There Goes the Bride", March 4th, and it has been sold. Again this year, the IRS is offering tax service (free of charge) for the seniors, which is being used extensively. The seniors have been asked to perform at the 1989 Mid-Cities How to Grow Lawn and Garden Show. Mrs. Wakeley stated that she had attended two workshops in January: Shelter Systems Officer Course (from the Emergency Management of Texas) 16th-20th in Austin and Gus and Goldie (8th Birthday) 26th-28th in El Paso. Flag Football started last week and we have 5 teams in the league, which is a beginning. The Basketball League started January 14 with 6 teams. They will be playing 30 games (double round robin) . Registration for the Mini-Spring Softball League is under way thru February 24th. League play starts March 6th thru April 28th. Our regular Spring League begins in May. Park and Recreation Board meeting Minutes February 06, 1989 Page Four We have several bids on Regional TAAF Tournaments being: Men's Church Major, Women's B, Women's Church, Women's Major, Women's A and we will host the State Co-Rec on August 12 and 13. We are currently looking for sponsors for all of the tournaments. We are still continuing our plans for the 10K and hope that Whataburger will sponsor us again this year. Mr. Marland Ernest requested a comparison of the attendance records for 1988 and 1989 to appear in the minutes each month. IV. BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY REPORT None V. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None VI. INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Sonny Gonzalez of the Euless Athletic Association, voiced his concern for this seasons Boys Baseball.
