HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-11-07 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board November 7, 1988 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. , Monday, November 07, 1988, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest. Other members present were Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien (alternate) Messrs. Richard McNeese, Leon Hogg and Jerry Robinson (alternate). Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Park Director; Jay Heilman, Director of Community Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were Johnnie Green, Brad Burke from the Parks Department and Max Sacco a missionary from Beirut. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated August 29, 1988 and October 03, 1988 were approved as written. s-. OLD BUSINESS Board Members' Report: Mr. Leon Hogg reported that the Spook House had 60 volunteers for a total of 300 hours. This brings a total year-to-date to 9,308 hours at $5.00 per hour for a total savings of $46,540.00. He reported that the parks at South Euless, Lakewood and Euless Junior High are well maintained. Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh reported that while her grandchildren were here, they visited all the parks in the HEB area. The parks are in very good condition and that Midway has the opportunity to become the show place park in Euless. Mr. Richard McNeese reported that he had checked Bear Creek Park and almost all the parking spots were taken. The park was utilized with a man hitting golf balls, youth soccer, little league baseball, touch football game, young ladies in the pavilion area and some people walking. Its just a great time of the year for the parks to be utilized. The parks are well maintained as always. Mr. Jerry Robinson reported the grass is looking really good on the soccer fields at Van Riet. Recreation Director's Report Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported the attendance for the month of September for the gym was 3,876, RMC 550 and Simmons 510, total 4,936. The month of October we had a total of 11 rentals (workshops, weddings, and 1 special event, our Spook House). We have just completed our first Fall Session, October 28, we had 250 active participants in structured classes. Our new classes start this week and go through December 23, 1988. We have had 22 structured classes to make this session. The Kitchen Band performed November 4, 1988 at Watsons Nursing Home for 50 patients. They have been performing a couple of times a month for the last several months. They also had a Halloween Bingo and a covered dish lunch afterwards. This year we had our spook house, Haunting of Euless, for two nights, instead of one night. The Softball Leagues are over and this is the last week of make-up rain outs. We are starting our pre-season tournaments starting Nov. 7and 8 through Nov. 17 and 18. We are still having volleyball in the gym, Monday nights, from 7:00-9:00. Our Flag Football League didn't make in our early Fall registration, but we are going to have registration again, now through the end of November. The fee will be a $275.00 for eight games. II. Park Director's Report Mr. Rick Herold announced that through this budget year he would like to bring some of his employees to the meetings, to explain some of their job performances. Also for them to answer any questions the board members might have. The two employees attending tonights meeting are Johnnie Green and Brad Burke. We are expecting information on the Park Grant in January of 1989. Park and recreation Board Minutes November 7, 1988 Page Three Mr. Herold stated that he and Mr. ' Heilman were at the bid opening for play ground equipment. From the initial opening, it looks really good on the financial stand point, that we will be able to get all 5 sets of play ground equipment. The soccer complex is coming along well and by next season, it should be in good shape. Major October Projects: 1) Cleaned out all flower beds in entire system and planted pansy's multi-colored. 2) Seeded Winter Rye in various city locations. 3) Completely re-worked Right-of-Ways thru-out community. 4) Initiated new weed prevention program. 5) Finalized program conforming to the Hazard Communication Act and Employers Right-to-know. 6) Passed Texas Department of Agriculture chemical Inspection with no violations. 7) Marked dead trees for winter removal. 8) Submitted soil samples of 15 locations for analyzation. III. INPUT FROM DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES Mr. Jay Heilman announced that Mrs. Valentine a member of a religious group, from the Middle East is donating a Red Oak Tree to the city of Euless. Mr. Heilman gave a brief update on the progress of the new recreation center, and stated that everything is on schedule. IV. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None V. INPUT FROM VISITORS None REASSIGNMENT OF AREA AND FACILITIES Reassignment of area and facilities were made by Chairman Ernest. They are as follows: McCormick and Villages of Bear Creek - Helen Lightbody Midway Park and Blessing Branch - Richard McNeese Westpark and Wilshire - Ron Henson South Euless and Euless Junior High - Bonnie O'Brien Community Building, Ruth Millican, Special Events and New Recreation Facilities - Mary Lib Saleh Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park and Oakwood Terrace - Leon Hogg Van Riet and Del Norte - Marland Ernest Bear Creek and Lakewood - Jerry Robinson All of the park board members have selected some of our special events to be involved in. Mr. Ernest stated that we will add an item in Old Business, for special events. Also if Mary Lib will remind the board of the coming events, and who is responsible for that particular one.
