HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-10-03 REGULAR MEETING PARK AND RECREATION BOARD OCTOBER 3, 1988 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:00pm, October 3, 1988, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest. Other members present were Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O' Brien (alternate) Messrs. Ron Henson, Leon Hogg and Jerry Robinson (alternate) . Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director: Rick Herold, Park Director: Jay Heilman, Director of Community Services: and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Marland Ernest. EULESS GOLDEN AGERS KITCHEN BAND The Euless Golden Agers Kitchen Band performed for the board members. AWARD PRESENTATION The volunteer of the month for September was Ruth Millican, one of our senior citizens. Volunteers for the month of October were Jenny Payton, another of our senior citizens, and two boy scouts, Jimmy Walker and Pete Haggard who planned, organized and performed volunteer services for the City of Euless. Through this work they have earned their Eagle Scout. Designation. VISITORS None MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated August 1 , 1988 were approved as written. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes October 3, 1988 Page Two OLD BUSINESS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS: Mr. Leon Hogg reported that the volunteers hours for August and September were as follows: August Highway 10 - 46 hours, BEE 47 hours. September Highway 10 - 49 hours, BEE 40 hours. Also, we have 5,374 volunteer hours from some of the young people with The Working Connection of the Fort Worth Independent School District. The two boy scouts had a total of 336 volunteers hours. This gives us a total for the year 9,008 volunteer hours, for a total value to the city of $45,040. Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien liaison for Carr Park reported that the park is in excellent condition except for one low spot on the jogging trail. Mr. Rick Herold assured her that the problem would be taken care of. Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh liaison for Midway Park reported on the progress of the new community building, and suggested everyone drive by and see for themselves. Also, there was a wonderful article in the Mid-Cities News on Del Norte Technology Inc. (they won the award for the company of the area) but they gave such good credit to the City of Euless and its Parks Department. Mr. Ron Henson liaison for Van Riet Soccer Field reported what an excellent job the young man had done, painting the trash cans. They are a bright yellow and can be seen for quite a distance. The soccer fields are in excellent condition. Mr. Marland Ernest passed a letter around for everyone to read. The letter was addressed to Rick Herold from Bob Wordinger, President of Bedford Euless Soccer Association, voicing his appreciation of the City of Euless, the Parks Department, concerning the soccer fields. TREE BOARD Mr. Ron Henson reported the month of September, 98 man-hours were spent on the Tree Projects. The dollar amount for these hours is approximately $1,249.50. The cumulative total for the year is approximately $33,500.00 with the greenhouse salaries excluded. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes October 3, 1988 Page Three NEW BUSINESS I . PARK DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold reported that the Grant Application was hand carried Friday, September 23,1988, to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin. Due to the approval from both the Park and Recreation Board and the Euless City Council, the re-submittal of the grant application was made possible. We are scheduled to know the status of the grant after the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission in January. He further reported that the 1987-1988 Annual Report has been completed, it includes a 1987-1988 re-cap, 1988-1989 projections and 1988-1989 goals. The report will be available at Novembers meeting. The work on the Van Riet Soccer Complex has been completed, and the facility was opened Saturday, September 24, 1988. A grand opening is planned for later this Fall. Without the $3,000.00 support for the irrigation system from the Soccer Association, there would be no grass on the fields. We have had no rain for seven weeks prior to the opening of the park. We have also opened another field, East Midway Field,(it will be more like a practice area) . We have had a very busy regular maintenance program die to the extremely warm conditions. II. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported attendance at the recreational centers was 5,092 (Ruth Millican Center-615; Simmons-523; Gym-3,954) . Our Kitchen Band has 14 members, and they have made several guest appearances in recent weeks. Several of our seniors participated in the Arts and Crafts Fair in Haltom City. We took some of the seniors (by van), so they could enjoy the arts and crafts. Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes October 3, 1988 Page Four We have 25 structured classes in recreation, and only had to cancel a couple for lack of enrollment. The Softball League is halfway in its 10 weeks schedule. We are going to start volleyball on Monday nights, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in our gymnasium. We hope when our new gym opens, we will have a full fledged volleyball league. Flag Football will be registering and league play will begin December 5, 1988. Mrs. Wakeley announced that the spook house will be two nights this year, October 28th and 29th, and we can use volunteers. III. INPUT FROM DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES None IV. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER No input from city council members was noted at this meeting. V. NEW RECREATION CENTER PROGRESS REPORT, STAFF Mr. Jay Heilman stated that they had changed Project Manager. Things are going well, and it is predicted a late January or February completion. The shell is coming along well and rooms are developing. Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported on seeing some color (mauve & blue) on exterior/interior wall. The color scheme will be carried out throughout the center. VI. INPUT FROM VISITORS None Park and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes October 3, 1988 Page Five ELECTION OF OFFICERS The officers elected to serve on the Park and Recreation Board for the ensuing term were Mr. Marland Ernest - Chairman; Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh - Vice-Chairman; Mr. Leon Hogg - Secretary. Chairman Ernest stated that at our next meeting we will have the re-assignment of the area & facility reports.
