Park and Recreation Board
December 7 , 1987
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called
to order at 7 : 05 P.M. , Monday, December 7 , 1987 , in the Council
Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest.
Other members present were Mrs . Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Mary Lib
Saleh, Messrs . Ron Henson, Richard McNeese and Leon Hogg.
Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick
Herold, Park Director; Jay Heilman, Director of Community
Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mr. Richard McNeese.
VISITORS
Visitors attending the meeting were Mrs. Alice Ernest, Mrs. Jan
Hogg, Mr. Ray Saleh and Mr. Pete Wakeley.
MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated November 2 , 1987 were
approved as written.
OLD BUSINESS
BOARD MEMBERS REPORTS
OBJECTIVE UPDATE
Mr. Leon Hogg stated that he had not received any additional
hours since the last meeting.
Mr. Richard McNeese, liaison for J. A. Carr Park, Kiddie Carr
Park, and Lakewood reported that Carr Park was far more the
most active, with the walkers , joggers , and volleyball.
Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, liaison for Wilshire Park and West Park,
reported that there had been some vandalism at the Wilshire
Park. Someone had broken into the coke machine . Also some
tree damage in the park, probably due to the heavy rain we
had recently. Otherwise the park was very clean.
She further reported that West Park must get a lot of traffic
because there are a lot of pot holes in the street, that she
had not been aware of before.
Mr. Marland Ernest, liaison for McCormick Park and Bear Creek
Park, stated that since he lives near by, he sometimes drives
around the parks just checking for something out of the ordinary.
Mr. Lynn Shackelford gave a brief progress report on the new
community building facilities.

TREE BOARD
Mr. Ron Henson reported that he did not have an updated report at
this time.
Mr. Marland Ernest verified that the application for Tree City USA
had been submitted for 1988 . Mr. Henson stated that they should
contact us sometime in December.
Mr. Ernest announced that we are planning to have some type of a
commemoration celebration in honor of our being recertified as
Tree City USA. Discussion centered around the possibility of
planting a tree in our new park, on Arbor Day.
NEW BUSINESS
I .
PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mr. Rick Herold thanked the Board members for attending the open-
ing of the Del Norte Ultra Park in late November.
At the Van Riet Soccer Complex, after about a month of dirt work,
the seed is down, the sign is ready to be put up, along with a
designated parking area. We are looking forward to moving our
soccer friends to the new complex.
We will be making some effort at West Park in the near future,
to improve the front of the facility.
Along with Wintertime, which is tree planting, movement of trees,
tree pruning, and working in the area behind South Euless Park.
Concerning the potholes at West Park, they will put the concrete
parking slabs through the parking area, which will slow down the
traffic.
In December we are having a meeting with Texas A&M Sports Turf
expert, as we continue to work to improve our turf.
Mr. Rick Herold proceeded to hand out pamplets titled, "Park
Partners. . .Pride Reducing Crime" concerning the vandalism in
this area in recent months. He asked the Board members to read
the article and if they had any additional comments , we could
incorporate them at our next meeting.
Mr. Marland Ernest reported that he had been in touch with Bonnie
O' Brien concerning the Del Norte Park and the Van Riet Park.
She graciously accepted the two parks as her areas of responsibility.
II .
RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported that our attendance is down due to closing
the buildings for the holidays . The overall attendance at the
recreational centers was 4 , 242 (Ruth Millican Center 395; Simmons
Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, December 7 , 1987, Page 3
682; Gym 3 , 165) . The meetings and rentals are up: 4 meetings out-
side our program, 1 two day work shop, 1 Bear Creek reservation and
1 Gazebo rental.
The Senior Citizens had their Thanksgiving Luncheon with 68 attending.
The Seniors Kitchen Band performed at the HEB Nursing Home and at
Pinkie Chaneyworths 90th birthday.
The students in our karate classes performed at the Japanese
Festival and Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth on November 21 and 22 .
Pinnocchio was a live performance at Ruth Millican Center on Dec. 6th.
This was in cooperation with the Trinity Arts Council . The on stage
players brought their production to our facility. We rented some
theater lights and borrowed a sound system. We had about 60 attending
the performance.
Our Flag Football League has just ended, with three teams going to
regionals, and one team (Quality Paint) winning.
The Winter Flag Football League is going on now, and will end the
middle of January.
For the first time in several years, we are starting a Mens Basketball
League, with games starting the week of January 18th. We are going to
try and get an under 6 ' , 3 on 3 , Saturday tournament.
Mrs. Wakeley announced that she has found a sponsor (Bill Forester,
owner of Stephens Sports Equipment Co. ) for our Gold Medal Award.

INPUT FROM BEAUTIFY EULESS EVERYDAY COMMITTEE
Mrs. Alice Ernest reported that BEE has been concentrating on their
weak areas which are: recycling, law enforcement and strengthening
our leadership committee.
In our recycling interest we had a guest speaker from United Paper
Recycling of Fort Worth , at our November meeting. He gave a
presentation of newspaper recycling.
She reported that Waste and Place is being taught in the schools,
and we are already seeing some favorable results.
Our Adopt Main Street Program has been enlarged by the Southwestern
Bell CR Team. They did their planting a couple of weekends ago
on Main Street.
Mrs. Ernest expressed her graditude to Jennifer Rike, for the
publicity the BEE program had received in the recreation program,
that is mailed to all Euless residents .
Mr. Ron Couch, an attorney, who has recently moved here from another
state, has joined the Leadership Committee, and will help with the
law enforcement.

INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
None
V.
INPUT FROM VISITORS
Mr. Jay Heilman announced that February 22 , 1988 , is the designated
Arbor Day.
He went on to thank the spouses for joining us for the pre-board
meeting and dinner.
Mr. Heilman asked the help of the board members for any suggestions
for park improvement.
Mr. Ernest commented that Del Norte is to be commended for their
representation at the grand opening of the Del Norte Park.
Mr. Leon Hogg asked if we could have a spot on the agenda to
discuss the park improvement.
Mr. Ernest stated that it will be on the agenda for the January meeting.
Discussion centered around the Gold Medal Award. During the month
of December, Julia Wakeley, Mary Lib Saleh, Alice Ernest and Jay
Heilman will meet concerning the Gold Medal Award.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned
at 9 : 15 P. M. , with a closing prayer by Chairman Ernest.
