Park and Recreation Board
August 3 , 1987
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called
to order at 7 : 10 p.m. , Monday, August 3 , 1987 , in the Council
Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ernest.
Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs . Mary Lib
Saleh, Mrs. Bonnie O' Brien, alternate member; Messrs. Ron Henson,
Leon Hogg and Richard McNeese.
Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold,
Interim Park Superintendent; and Diretha Crockett, recording
secretary.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mr. Ron Henson.
VISITORS
Visitors attending the meeting were Mrs. Carolyn Park and Mrs.
Alice Ernest.
MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated July 6 , 1987 were
approved as written.
OLD BUSINESS
Mr. Ernest announced to the Board that Cheryl Jones, Program
Supervisor; will be moving to Anchorage, Alaska. The Board
will draft a letter of commentation and recommendation for
Cheryl , to whom ever she would like to present it to.
I .
OBJECTIVE REPORTS
Mr. Leon Hogg gave an update report on the volunteer hours:
Highway 10 - 46 hours, Minor Girls Regionals Tournament - 4
volunteers - 8 hours each; State Jr. Girls Tournament - July
24th, 4 volunteers - 4 hours each; July 25th, 4 volunteers -
14 hours each; 6 volunteers - 24 hours each, total of 402 hours.
A total savings of $1 , 608 . 00 to the city at $4 . 00 per hour. A
total of $18 , 980. 00 for this year.
II .
AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS
Mr. Richard McNeese liaison for the Community Center and Special
Events , reported that the Girls Softball Tournament was a
smashing success.
Mr. Leon Hogg made a motion that a letter be written to the City
Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, August 3 , 1987 , Page 2
Council, commending Julia and Rick on a job well done.
Mr. Leon Hogg reported that West Park and Wilshire look very good.
He commented that at West Park, several people were having their
lunch there.
NEW BUSINESS
III .
PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mr. Rick Herold thanked all the board members that were at the
Girls Softball Tournament, and a special thanks to Mrs . Helen
Lightbody, for the official welcome to Euless introduction.
Mr. Herold reported that the vandals have been going through the
parks turning the trash cans over.
The lights at the burm have been fixed.
At Midway Park, field # 1 , the Park Department is trying a new
chem-irrigation process . All the weeds have been killed out,
and the fertilization will be sent through the irrigation system.
Mr. Herold stated that one of the main concerns now is suitable
land for soccer fields.
The Park Department has removed 2 truck loads of trash from the
creek at J. A. Carr Park.
Horticultural report:
The water truck has been broken, but as often as it is operating,
it is in use.
The Christmas tree has been treated with a fungicide.
Removed dead trees at Simmons and Trailwood.
Sprayed some of the Crepe Myrtles.
Planted some pampas grass at Bear Creek.
The park development at Del Norte will be starting soon.
Mr. Herold made mention that in the work session, the Board
might like to view the park department, machinery, and the park
area.
Mr. Ernest thanked Rick for the opportunity to view the park
department.
Mrs. Lightbody inquired about the repair on the swing that she
reported at the last board meeting.
Mr. Herold replied that the part has been ordered.

IV.
RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported that the overall attendance at the
recreational centers was 6 , 694 (Ruth Millican Center - 1 , 693;
Simmons - 999 ; Gym - 4002) .
She went on to report that we have had four rentals at Simmons.
The pavilion at Bear Creek has been reserved two times and
McCormick Park one time.
The month of July we had two movies in the park, with a combined
total of 1, 125 in attendance.
Our Fall registration begins August 31 , 1987 - September 12, 1987 ,
with classes starting the week of September 14 , 1987 .
The Euless Golden Age Group had a covered dish luncheon with
32 participants.
The "Spice of Life" kitchen band played at the Euless Nursing
Center on July 28th.
The swimming pool at South Euless was closed 1 day and open
30 days with a total attendance of 1 ,973 .
The swimming pool at Midway was closed 1 day, and open 30 days
with a total attendance of 2, 457 .
The swimming pool at Wilshire was open 31 days with a total
attendance of 1, 268 .
A total of 5, 698 participants for the month of July.
We had 6 teams in regionals; 2 Euless Jr. Girls and the Euless
Diamonds won 4th place in state tournament. Regional winners are:
Church Major, Church - c, Mens - C, Mens - B, Mens - A, and
• Womens - A.
We had 2 youth to win state in Track. We sent 24 youth to regionals
in Tennis, but no report on how many went to state.

DISCUSSION OF EULESS TREE BOARD
APPLICATION FOR RECERTIFICATION OF TREE CITY USA
After some discussion regarding the Tree Board, Mr. Ron Henson
made the motion that we recommend to the City Council that
we apply for recertification for 1988 .
Mr. Leon Hogg seconded the motion and the vote was:
Ayes: Messrs. Henson, Ernest, McNeese, Hogg, Mrs. Lightbody
and Mrs. Saleh.
Nays: None

Chairman Ernest declared the motion carried.
Chairman Ernest moved that Mr. Henson and Mr. McNeese be elected by
acclamation for chairman and vice chairman of the Tree Board.
The motion was seconded by Mrs. Lightbody and carried.
Chairman Ernest stated that on the agenda each month, there will
be an item concerning the Tree Board.

INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
None
VIII .
INPUT FROM VISITORS
Mrs . Alice Ernest reported that this next year they are going to
concentrate on areas of more beautification, recycling and more
community involvement (not only volunteers but businesses) .
She went on to report that George McKinney, Carolyn Park and
myself met with Southwestern Bell Community Relations teams and
Mr. Gary Terry, the new Director of Community Relations. We
really did a public relations program for the City of Euless . Our
purpose was to get the Community Relations involved with the
Beautification Program.
They have also had meetings regarding the placement of the
Community Achievement Award. We have a recommendation sent to
City Council, that it be by the Sesquicentennial Clock, in
front of the library.
She went on to report that the Yard of the Month winners have
been announced in the Euless Newspaper.
The Business Award (which will be published in the Business News
Letter) will go to Ferguson on Highway 10 . Mr. Tom Hart and
myself will make the presentation.
Mr. Wynn Porter has completed the sign, "Adopt Main Street" , every-
one participating in the program will have their name on the sign.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned at
