HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-06-01 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board June 1 , 1987 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7: 05 p. m. , Monday, June 1 , 1987 , in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Mr. Ron Henson until Acting Chairman Helen Lightbody arrived. Other members present were Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, and Messrs . Richard McNeese and Leon Hogg. Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Interim Park Superintendent; K. B. Fuller, Director of Community Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mrs . Mary Lib Saleh. Mr. K. B. Fuller announced the appointment of the new Board Member, Mr. Leon Hogg, and the new alternate member, Mrs . Bonnie O' Brien. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were Alice Ernest and Dick Hight. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated April 6 , 1987 , were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS I . INPUT FROM OBJECTIVES Mr. Leon Hogg gave an updated report on the volunteer hours: Easter Egg Hunt, 6 volunteers, 2 hours each, total of 12 hours. Golf Tournament, 18 volunteers, 192 hours. 10K Run, 46 volunteers , 5 hours each, with a total of 230 hours. He went on to say that since our program began, the dollars involved are $23 , 319 . 00 , based on $4 . 00 per hour. He went on to announce that we have a fireman, Cole Brown, who has been volunteering some time with the Seniors Kitchen Band. II . AREA AND FACILITY REPORT Mrs . Mary Lib Saleh reported that since the last meeting , (when she reported about the grocery carts in the creek) all of grocery carts have been removed. She went on to ask Mr. Rick Herold, if there were any provisions at the softball fields for a first aid kit. Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, June 1 , 1987 , Page 2 Mr. Herold replied, that it was a good suggestion, and he would check into getting some kits for Ed Harrison and the scorekeepers . Mr. Richard McNeese reported his area of responsibility is the Community Building and Special Events. At Carr Park he observed a lot of outdoor activity. There were people using the picnic facilities, and the jogging trail was very active. He went on to state how the gazebo (with its construction and cross beams) is utilized by the birds. At the gym on May 30th , the Bear Creek Bandits (a square dance club) gave a 12 hour benefit dance for leukemia. Mr. Ron Henson stated his areas of facilities are Bear Creek and McCormick Park. At McCormick Park, it was very active with people using the sidewalks for skateboards , riding bicycles, and picnicing. He went on to say that the Bear Creek Park facility is very nice and always active. Mr. Leon Hogg, liasion for West Park and Wilshire Park, gave a very thorough report on the parks and condition of equipment and facilities. He reported his concern about someone dumping limbs in Wilshire Park. He went on to say how he thought the wooden signs looked super nice and how Rick and his people are doing a super job. NEW BUSINESS Mr. Lynn Shackelford gave a presentation of a scale model of the new community building facilities. III . PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold gave all the board members a copy of the revised mowing schedule, due to all the rain, they are behind on the mowing. Starting next week, there will be two mowing crews. He went on to say, that they are budgeting for some picnic tables. Mr. Herold stated it was Mrs. Helen Lightbody who got the shopping carts removed from the creek, after calling Winn-Dixie (they removed about 20 , we removed 4) . Mr. Herold replied to Mr. Leon Hoggs report, that necessary repairs on his list had been taken care of . He went on to thank Mrs. Wakeley, who is helping with a program, in conjunction with the Baseball Association, where the youth pick up trash in the park and receive a pass for that afternoon at the pool . The youth come into the park Monday thru Friday and pick up in the park . Last month the percentage of hours spent were: ground maintenance 43%, ballfield maintenance 10% , and Horticulture 9% . Regular Meeting, PArk and Recreation Board, June 1 , 1987 , Page 3 He also reported how the Park and Recreation Departments had helped other departments of the city when the Civil Defense was put into effect during the flooding. The Parks employees have have planted 120 Crepe Myrtles, 780 Lantanas, and installed 300 bags of bark mulch on Highway 10 . IV. RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported the overall attendance at the recreational centers was 7, 524 ( R.M.C. -1 , 719 ; Simmons - 1 , 334; Gym - 4 ,471) . Our Summer I Session has 125 different classes , workshops , special events, clinics, and we have 522 registered, compared to our last session of 380 participants. We had 122 seniors in attendance for the month of May. The name of their kitchen band is, "Spice of Life. " They had their second performance on Mar 21st, and now they are going on the road. They will be performing for the Joy Group at the 1st Methodist Church of Euless, on June 4th. On May 28th, the Senior Citizen Group took a Mystery Trip to the Northside of Fort Worth, where they had lunch at the Old Stockyards Hotel (32 attended) . Our next Recreation Program will be mailed out June 15th, with registration starting June 29th - July 3rd, with classes beginning the week of July 6tn. Mrs. Wakeley went on to report about the Golf Tournament we had on April 25th, with 104 golfers and volunteers. The 25th of May we had our 10K Run, with the Euless Lions Club as our co-host. We had over 250 participants, plus the volunteers. The preschool class had their graduation on may 29th. Our softball city tournament are being held the next 2 weekends of the month, to determine who goes to Regionals . The Mid-Cities Golf Association has 2 tourmanents planned, one at TWU in Denton, and the other one in Vegas. Our rentals of the buildings, for the month of June are: Bear Creek Pavilion - 4 , Simmons and the gazebo - 7, and the gym - 1 . All the city pools opened May 30th. V. INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Dick Hight, President of the Euless Lions Club, presented a letter to Vice Chairman, Helen Lightbody to read to the Board Members. The letter was in appreciation to the City of Euless, and all their support in helping make the 10K Lions Pride Run, a big success. He also made mention that the Euless Lions Club is sponsoring the T-shirts for the movies in the park . Mrs. Alice Ernest, Chairman of the Beautification of Euless , gave an update on the activities of the Beautification Committee. She announced the winners of the Yard of the Month, which are as follows: 2804 Spice Bush, 1602 Timber Ridge Drive, 508 Cullum Drive and 4005 Linkwood. They will have a sign placed in their yard for one month and receive a proclamation from the Mayor. She went on to announce that Euless was one of the finalists in the Governor ' s Community Achievement Award.
