HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-03-02 _ t Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board March 2 , 1987• CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7: 05 p.m. , Monday, March 2; 1987, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Zahn. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh and Messrs. Marland Ernest, Ron Henson and Richard McNeese. Mr. Leon Hogg, alternate member, attended the meeting. Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Interim Park Superintendent; K. B. Fuller, Director of Community Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mr. Marland Ernest. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were, Dick Hight and Alice Ernest. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated February 2, 1987, were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS I. INPUT FROM OBJECTIVES, Board Members Mr. Leon Hogg reported that six volunteer hours had been recorded since the last meeting. II . AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS, BOARD MEMBERS Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh, liaison for J. A. Carr Park, was happy to report that she was well pleased with the physical condition of the park and how well it was maintained. Mrs. Saleh was also very pleased to see how much the Simmon' s Center was being used by the public. III . STATEWIDE RECOGNITION OF CITY OF EULESS The Statewide Recognition of City of Euless was dropped from the agenda, due to lack of time to initiate it. RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported that the overall attendance at the recreational centers was 7, 153 (Ruth Millican Center - 1 , 044; Simmons - 766; Gym - 5, 343) . The Spring Registration is in session now through March 6 , and classes will meet March 9 , 1987 through April 25, 1987 . The last possible date to add information to the program will be Wednesday, March 4 , 1987. Activities of the Recreation Department are: Little Ladies Tea Party - February 13, 1987 with 16 young ladies attending. Sock Hop - February 27 - 27 attended. Employees Breakfast - February 27, 1987 - between 165-175 employees attended. We have Income Tax Services estimated free for the Seniors. Mrs. Willie Mae McCormick brought valentine cards for all the seniors. The Seniors had their covered dish luncheon, with 38 attending, and entertainment by Willie Byers, and Sam Jones . Rick Herold and Jimmy Beck presented a caladium kit to all the seniors. In our Spring Softball League, 68 teams have signed up, this is 94% of our recreation capacity of 72 teams. The Mid Cities Golf Association now has a total of 60 members. They will be getting together at Willow Springs on March 7 , 1987. March 14 , 1987 will start their official week at L. B. Houston. The Ultra Classic Golf Tournament is April 25, 1987 , at Lewisville. One on One Basketball Classic will be March 21 , 1987 , at 9 : 30 a.m. , at the gym. The Little Lads Leprechaun Shin Dig, will be March 13 , 1987, from 1 : 30 - 2 : 30, at the Simmons Center. V. PARK DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold reported that due to the early nice weather in the month, it has brought forth early mowing (like the summer mowing schedule) . Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, March 2, 1987 , Page 3 We have continued the South Euless project just by putting some signs in (No Dumping and No Parking) and planting 3 pine trees on the opposite side of the park. On the beautification front, we have planted 60 Ligustrums around the tennis courts at Bear Creek. We have created a new bed at the entrance to the jogging track at Simmons. Also, we have made 2 new flower beds along the side of the Administration Building, as you walk to the entrance of the gymnasium. Work has been done at the rose garden, at J. A. Carr Park. They have added clay and preparation for softball which starts March 16, 1987. West Park is a very utilized facility with; soccer 5 nights a week; play during the day; Girls Softball; and City Softball . We are keeping the field closed the other two days a week (Monday and Friday) to try to keep the turf in as good a shape as possible. Some of the irrigation system has been repaired at City Hall . Our sign of the month is at Wilshire. . In conjunction with the growing nursery, we have placed 2 Red Oaks at the Police Station. In addition, with BEE, we have 3 Live Oaks at North Main Street we were able to plant for them. VI . BRIEF FILM PRESENTATION The Park and Recreation Board likewise recommended that the presidents of the various leagues who our facilities for soccer, softball , and baseball be invited to attend a viewing of, "Is Winning Everything" in order to ensure that ethical conduct and the dictates of good sportsmanship are being met and to ensure that our young people are exposed to a healthy and positive attitude about recreation. VII. INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None VIII . INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Dick Hight gave a summary of the Memorial Day 10K Run, sponsored by the Euless Lions Club and the Euless Recreation Department. Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, March 2, 1987, Page 4 Mrs. Alice Ernest gave an update on the activities of the Beautification Committee. Mr. K. B. Fuller stated he has ordered a bronze plaque, which will be placed in the city hall courtyard. The plaque will be a replica of the sign thats on the city limit signs, except it will have a date on it. Hopefully the courtyard will be a showplace for future city awards. Chairman Zahn stated he had recently accepted a position on the Planning and Zoning Committee of the City. He attended his resignation to the Park and Recreation Board to Helen Lightbody, and a copy to the City. Council, effective immediately.
