HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-02-02 Regular Meeting Park and Recreaton Board February 2 , 1987 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7: 00 p.m. , Monday, February 2 , 1987 , in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Zahn. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mrs . Mary Lib Saleh and Messrs. Marland Ernest and Richard McNeese. Mr. Michael Chance and Mr. Leon Hogg, alternate members, attended the meeting. Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Rick Herold, Interim Park Superintendent; K. B. Fuller, Director of Community Services; and Diretha Crockett, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh. VISITORS Visitors attending the meeting were, City Manager W. M. Sustaire, Mr. Ken Davis, and Mrs. Alice Ernest. MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated January 5, 1987 , were approved as written. OLD BUSINESS I . INPUT FROM OBJECTIVES , BOARD MEMBERS Chairman Zahn presented the outcome of the work session for those that were unable to attend. It was determined that a report on objectives at every meeting was not necessary but that objectives would be included in the minutes. Mr. Leon Hogg reported that the volunteer hours had not changed since the last meeting. Starting in February there will be projects going on, and will get even busier as we go into the summer. He went on to say how proud he was that from 1985- 1986 , the Volunteer Program had increased 400% . II . AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS, BOARD MEMBERS Chairman Zahn reported that starting next month, the Baord Members will be rotating their area and facility reports, every six months. They will be as follows : Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, February 2 , 1987, Page 2 1) Ron Henson - McCormick Park and Bear Creek 2) Marland Ernest - Midway Park and Blessing Branch 3) George Zahn - West Park and Wilshire 4) Helen Lightbody - So. Euless, Lakewood, Euless Junior High 5) Richard McNeese - Community Building, Ruth Millican Center, Special Events 6) Mary Lib Saleh - Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park, Oakwood Terrace Mr. Richard McNeese commended Rick and his Staff on an excellent job well done with the area in South Euless, north of the bridge. Mrs. Mary Lib Saleh stated how impressed she was with McCormick Park, and all the work done there. The park was just beautiful. III . STATEWIDE RECOGNITION OF CITY OF EULESS Chairman Zahn stated that this subject will be discussed at the next meeting. IV. PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mr. Rick Herold stated that due to vandalism, Bear Creek Park has gone through six tennis court nets this month. The Parks Department are in the process of putting up chain link tennis court nets at Bear Creek. The play ground equipment at Bear Creek has a series of tires, and the last tire each week is missing. Sometimes the vandals burn the tire in the pavilion, which takes time to clean up. We are working with the police on this matter. We have contacted the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service regarding the land and water conservation fund. The Simmons jogging track has been extended. A walkway has been made from the parking lot to the jogging trail . At West Park, the metal signs are being replaced with wooden signs. The ballfields at Bear Creek and Midway #2 have been reclayed. From the Horticulturist stand point, the roses at Simmons Park have been thinned out. The Parks Department were happy to assist with the Arbor Day Celebration. For the month of January, 1860 person hours were as follows: parks betterment leading 462, Horticulture 382, grounds maintenance 175, were the three leaders. The irrigation system is being checked out. Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, February 2, 1987 , Page 3 For the future, all possibilities are being investigated for a 5 . 22 acre park (behind Del Norte on Airport Circle) . V. RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mrs. Wakeley reported that the overall attendance at the recreational centers was 6, 643 (Ruth Millican Center - 815; Simmons - 785; Gym - 5, 043) not counting the Arbor Day Celebration. The Seniors Citizens met their usual scheduled times this month, plus a trip for lunch at Furr' s Cafeteria, January 29 , with 32 seniors participating. Our Winter Session is in progress now, the classes that made are at 77% capacity. The exercise and physical activity classes are by far the most popular. The Spring Program is at the printers. After this session, we are going from 7 to 8 week schedule of classes. That will be four mail outs instead of five. This will allow us one less print out and one less postage. Flag Football culminated last week-end with our post-season classic. The team, Lightening beat The Raiders, 43-24 to capture the championship. Twelve teams played this winter. We are expecting 3 Flag Football Leagues next season, (Men' s , Women' s and Men' s Church) . Our Golf Association held its first get-together and some 18 golfers attended. We have 48 currently signed up, and we expect to have close to 100 members by summer. Coming Golf Events: February 24-Willow Springs; March-L. B. Houston. Mrs. Helen Lightbody is volunteering her time to work with this program. Spring Softball Registeration is underway effective today. Fifteen teams have signed up for our leagues which will begin the week of March 16 . INPUT FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS None Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, February 2 , 1987 , Page 4 VII . INPUT FROM VISITORS Mr. Ken Davis, a visitor, at the meeting gave his thoughts and ideas on the use of the right of ways around the power poles. He suggested that they be used for jogging and bike trails. Mr. W. M. Sustaire commented briefly on the status of the recreation center. It is in the planning stage with the architect. The center will be located at Midway Park. Mrs. Alice Ernest thanked all the Board Members for judging the Arbor Day posters, from the elementary schools of Euless. Mrs. Ernest also gave us an update on the activities of the beautification committee.
