Park and Recreation Board
July 7, 1986
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called
to order at 7: 00 P.M., Monday July 7 , 1986 in the Council Chambers
of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Zahn. Other members
present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Mr. Ron Henson and Mr. Leon
Hogg, alternate member.
Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Bob Phillips,
Parks Director; K. B. Fuller, Personnel Director; and Diretha
Crockett, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
Mrs. Julia Wakeley introduced Mr. Rick Herold, Recreation
Superintendent, in the Recreation Department.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Chairman Zahn.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated June 2 , 1986 , were
approved as written.
OLD BUSINESS
I .
KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL REPORT
Mrs. Helen Lightbody reported the Keep Texas Beautiful Committee
had a meeting June 17 , 1986, and they are still gearing for the
new year. The new year begins now and they will be reorganizing,
re-evaluating and working to help our city staff and citizens
in a Community Betterment Program.
Mrs. Carolyn Park and Mr. Ron Tipton took the 2nd place winning
Girl Scout Troop to Austin, Texas to receive their award. (all
but one Girl Scout attended)
She further reported, Mr. Ron Tipton made a tape of the program,
and there are some interesting projects , we hope to include in our
youth program this year.
Mrs. Helen Lightbody went on to report, Mr. and Mrs. George
McKinney (sponsored by Texas Power and Light) and herself,
attended the 19th Annual Meeting.
The red, white and blue trash cans provided for the city by
the Youth Volunteers of the Keep Texas Beautiful , have been
installed along Highway 10 .

Also, we have two new signs up, showing that we are participating
in the Adopt A Highway Project.
New selections have been made for the "Yard of the Month" for June. '
There were five yards selected, the winners will receive a plaque
with their name engraved on it , declaring them winners for the
month of June 1986, and a sign placed in their yard for the next
month.
Mr. Leon Hogg made a statement, that at the last Council Meeting,
they had all the girls scouts there, and the Mayor did his
proclamation for Girl Scout Day for the City of Euless.
Mrs. Helen Lightbody made mention that they had received a letter
of recognition, for their entry in the Beautification Program,
and she was going to present it to the City at the Council
Meeting on July 8 , 1986 .
II .
AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS
Mr. Ron Henson reported his area is Midway Park, and the maintenance
crew have replaced the lights at the tennis courts. During the
day the little league boys baseball were playing ball. The
snack stand by the swimming pool had a lot, of activity. Other times
there were picnickers at the park. The park is in real good shape.
Chairman Zahn reported his area is Carr Park, Kiddie Carr Park
and Oakwood Terrace. At Carr Park there is a lot of activity,
with the joggers , and the movies in the park.
There is still not much activity at Kiddie Carr Park.
At Oakwood Terrace the trees are looking real good, and there is
activity at the park. All the parks are in good shape.
Mr. Bob Phillips reported the jogging trail at Carr Park has
been roto-tilled.
Mrs. Helen Lightbody reported she had not seen much activity
at West Park.
III.
OBJECTIVE REPORT
Mrs. Helen Lightbody had no report at this time.
Mr. Leon Hogg reported on the volunteers, and nothing has transpired
since the last meeting.
Mr. Leon Hogg announced his plans for Adopt A Park, he had
talked with Ron Tipton from the Keep Texas Beautiful Program.
He further stated he was waiting for the Boards approval
because everything had been worked out with Mr. Ron Tipton.

Discussion then centered around the Adopt A Park Program. Chairman
Zahn recommended that Mr. Leon Hogg go ahead with his plans.
NEW BUSINESS
IV.
RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mrs . Julia Wakeley reported the attendance at Ruth Millican Center
was 1 , 542 and 805 at the Simmons Center, a total of 2, 347.
She further reported on the swimming pools for the months of June
and July. Despite a couple of rainy weeks and threating weather,
pool attendance continues to increase. June attendance total for
three pools was 7 ,936.
Three pool rentals have already been scheduled for the month of
July.
We are presenting a "Fun-Olympics" for the three pool staffs , on
July 20th, at Wilshire Pool . It will be a pool vs. pool in a
fun evening of recreation and fellowship.
The First Wacky Dive Contest is scheduled for South Euless Pool ,
Saturday, July 19th. The events range from funniest dive to most
original. Different age groups will compete against each other.
Mrs. Julia Wakeley went on to report that Euless played host to
the TAAF Senior Girls Regionals, Saturday, June 28 , 1986 , at
West Park, five teams competed, with the Hurst Angels winning
the championship. The Euless Aces received an at large bid
earlier today.
This coming weekend we are hosting the TAAF Jr. Girls Regionals,
9 teams will compete for the trip to state. Teams from Euless,
Hurst, Granbury and Mansfield will be batting for the top spot.
On June 26th, thirty Seniors went on the Spring Trip entitled
"Sesquicentennial Bingo Mystery Tour" , they were entertained
by Crackers the clown at the Simmons Center. After that they
went to the Sheraton in Denton for lunch, games , singing and on
to view the Wagon Train. They made the comment, this was one of
the best trips they had ever been on.
The Seniors 4th of July luncheon, sponsored by the MBank of
Euless , was held on July 3rd, with thirty-eight participants.
The Softball TAAF Regional allocations twenty five teams.
In the TAAF Track, we have one hundred and thirty participants.
In the TAAF Tennis entries there were twenty seven, with (sixty
one participants in local play) .

Movies In The Park
1st Movie - Jungle Book - 225 attendance
2nd Movie - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 300 attendance
Free T-Shirt night for all the children, sponsored
by Kerry McCombs Insurance.
July 11 , 1986 - Jack And The Beanstalk (animated)
Fall League Registration begins next week.
V.
PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Mr. Bob Phillips reported that the Parks Department has installed
fifty five gallon drums on Highway 10 , they have been painted red,
white, and blue and carry the "Don' t Mess With Texas" slogan on
them.
The Parks Department has received our signs stating that we have
adopted five miles on Highway 10 for nicking up trash, trimming
employees put railroad ties and landscaping around it to make
it visible.
At Carr Park, Parks workers have roto-tilled the jogging trail.
At West Park, Parks employees have repainted the stadium seats
and prepared the park for a girls softball tournament.
At South Euless, the Parks Department has pulled up and removed
the blacktop and put in two railroad tie retaining walls and
filled them in with sand and put sand around in the park area.
The Parks Department has done some dirt work at the retaining
wall at Bear Creek.
Parks employees have fertilized around City Hall once more.
The Parks Department is continuing to be mowing at 100%.
Parks Workers have repaired all of the leaks and vandalism in
all of the irrigation systems in the parks. The systems are
now all running up to par.
Parks Employees have put in another 1000 heads of drip system at
the greenhouse in Kiddie Carr. They have also built a small
12 'x16 ' building there, in order to install valves, or put in
fertilizer, chemicals, etc.

ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned
at 8: 05 P.M., with a closing prayer by Chairman Zahn.
