Park and Recreation Board
June 2 , 1986
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called
to order at 7 : 00 P .M. , Monday June 2 , 1986 in the Council Chambers
of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Zahn. Other members
present were Mrs . Helen Lightbody, and Messrs . Marland Ernest ,
Ron Henson and Richard McNeese .
Mr. Leon Hogg, alternate member, attended the meeting.
Also present were Julia Wakeley, Recreation Director; Bob Phillips ,
Parks Director; K. B. Fuller, Personnel Director; and Diretha
Crockett, Recording Secretary.
VISITORS
None
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by Mr. Ron Henson.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting dated May 5 , 1986 , were approved
with the following correction requested by Mr. Richard McNeese ,
Page 3 , Paragraph 12 , correct the spelling of apologized.

! 'P TEXAS BEAUTIFUL REPORT
The "Yard of the Month" awards were judged, the winners will be
announced and signs posted. There was a larger list of people
wanting to participate this year, which made judging more difficult.
Mr. Ron Tipton, head of the Youth Volunteer Program, has been notified
that his Girls Scout Group has won second place in the state.
1 . They collected $15 . 00 in donations from local businessmen,
(total of $180 . 00) to provide trash cans on Highway 10 . The cans
were painted red, white , and blue .
2 . They cleaned Wilshire Shopping Center , and removed a truck
load of litter.
3 . They put in a flowerbed at Wilshire Elementary School .
4 . Students in the troop, talked to approximately 600 children
at Wilshire Elementary School regarding litter and the Beautification
Program.
5 . They helped clean up Grapevine Lake with the Beautification
Program, last fall .
All of this went into their entry.

We hope the Mayor of Euless will declare a day of recognition,
for these Scouts . The girls will be going to Austin, Texas , July 1 ,
1986 to receive the award.
Mr. Zahn read the letter written to Mr. Ron Tipton, from the Park
and Recreation Board, in recognition of Rons work with the youth
volunteers .
II .
AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS
Mrs . Helen Lightbody stated that at West Park, there has not been
much activity, due to all the rain.
Mr. Richard McNeese, reported that South Euless , Lakewood , Euless
Jr . High and Wilshire , there was some activity, but it was down
due to the weather and wetness. In all , the rains have helped
the parks , they are very green and beautiful.
Mr. Richard McNeese commended Bob Phillips and the Parks Department
for the fast clean up at South Euless Park , after the picnickers
were there , on the last day of school . There was trash everywhere ,
trash cans turned over, and within 24 hours , it was clean.
Chairman Zahn stated that Carr Park is busy, still has the joggers ,
even with the wetness. The Parks are in good shape .
Chairman Zahn inquired , if there were plans to replace the trees
that had been planted and didn' t come out.
Mr. Bob Phillips replied, the trees that are dead, will be pulled
up. Some are coming up from the root system, they will top them,
and let them grow. He further added, this is not a good time of
the year , to plant trees .
Chairman Zahn reported the trees planted at Oakwood Terrace ,
are doing real good, and what an added attraction to the park.
Mr. Marland Ernest stated he had not talked with Julia , and
therefore had nothing to report on the recreation activities.
Mr. Ron Henson, liasion for Midway Park , reported the park is
still busy, even though it has been wet. On weekends , a lot of
activity, with our softball leagues , trying to get the rain out
games played.
III .
OBJECTIVE REPORTS
Mr. Ron Henson, deferred it to Mr . Leon Hogg, chairman of
Volunteer Services. Mr . Hogg reported nothing has happened
in the way of volunteers . He has been trying to contact Mr. Ron
Tipton, concerning the Adopt A Park Program. There should be
a report on this program, at the next meeting.

Mr. Marland Ernest had no report on the telephone survey.
Mrs. Julia Wakeley apologized to Mr. Marland Ernest , and that
it is part of her report. She is planning on getting with Mr.
Rod Ashford, to find out what we need to prepare for him, to put
it on the computer. Now that we are full staff again, we will get
back to the Telephone Survey.
Chairman Zahn stated his objective was covered by Mr. Leon Hoggs
report.
Mr. Richard McNeese had no report on his objective at this time.
Mrs. Helen Lightbody had no report at this time .
IV.
PARK DIRECTOR' S REPORT, Mr. Bob Phillips
Mr. Bob Phillips reported that at J. A. Carr Park , the Parks
Department employees have repainted the gazebo .
At McCormick Park, the Parks employees have moved the playground
equipment from one location to another. In addition, 200 feet
of cyclone fence has been put up in order to keep children from
wandering into the creek. A cement walkway leading to the play-
grounds new location has also been poured.
The Highway 10 Flower Bed Program is in full swing, with many of
the volunteers returning from last year. We also have 5 people
on a waiting list.
There were four winners for the Yard-Of-The-Month contest for
the month of May. The winners will be awarded a plaque and a
sign posted in the yard.
The Parks Department employees have placed landscape timbers
around one of the flower beds at City Hall , making a pretty
accent and also, a little easier for maintenance crews to
work at the flower beds .
Mr. Bob Phillips announced that Mayor Samuels had received a
letter from the Mayor of Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada ,
requesting something that is part of Euless . This year is the
100th birthday of the City of Vancouver . The City of Euless
is sending a Texas Native Pecan Tree as a commerative gift.
He further added, the tree is to be shipped to Vancouver by
express. The Parks Department built a special container to
keep the pecan tree presentable for viewing once it reaches its
destination. Also, we are going to add a few things , I Love
Trees , Euless bumper stickers , and etc. A letter was written to
the Mayor of Vancouver, explaining the back ground of the pecan
tree , and how we give one to each of our 4th graders, each year
on Arbor Day.

We will be putting eight or ten, 55 gallon trash cans on Highway 10 ,
they will be painted red, white , and blue . The responsibility of
the cans will be ours, and they will be emptied every Monday and
Friday.
V.
RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT, Mrs. Julia Wakeley
Mrs. Julia Wakeley reported the Summer Recreation Programs are out,
they were sent through the mail to residents of Euless , and through
The Shopper' s Guide. The young man on the cover is Keith Richards .
The attendance at the Ruth Millican Center was 2 , 340 and 853 at
the Simmons Center , total of 3 , 193 .
Eighteen Seniors attended the Senior Games at UTA, one senior
won a silver medal in biking.
We had twenty six Seniors attending the May luncheon at Furr ' s ,
and they all enjoyed their first ride in the new vans .
Mrs . Julia Wakeley further reported sixty five summer track
registrants , and expecting 150 more before the summer is over.
With our summer tennis , we have fifty registrants.
Our class registration, is May 27th thru June 6 , we have over 300
signed up now, and we have another week of registration.
The Movies in the Park begin June 13th, our first movie is ,
The Jungle Book.
The backyard rentals were up this month particularly Memorial
Week-end.
Our swimming pools opened May 31 , and will close August 15 . Our
compliments to the Parks Department , for the special clean-up
on the north side of Midway Swimming Pool , between the concession
stand, and Midway field 2 .
Mrs. Julia Wakeley announced that Rick Herold has joined the
Recreation Department, as Recreation Superintendent.
Mrs . Helen Lightbody asked if we had any information about having
a concert in the park, and we are still checking out the possibilities .
Mr. Ron Henson made mention of the write up in the newspaper,
about the parks in the Mid-Cities area.

VII.
INPUT FROM VISITORS
Mrs . Helen Lightbody asked Mr. K. B. Fuller, if anything has
been done concerning the Task Force. Mr. Fuller replied , they
would be meeting Thursday night, June 5th, at 7 : 30 .
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting adjourned
at 8 : 00 P.M. , with a closing prayer by Chairman Zahn.
