Dear Citizens,
Do you realize
that drowning is
the leading cause
of accidental
death for children
ages one to four?
Or that nearly
70 percent of
children drown
during non-swim
time? After everyone’s out of the
pool and doing something else (such
as preparing a meal or watching a
game), a child can wander off and
enter into a pool, hot tub or any
body of water, and drown in as little
as 20 seconds.
That is why it’s so important to
carefully monitor and “lifeguard
your child,” in and out of the water.
I also think it’s important to teach
children about water safety. You
can learn more about preventing
drowning by visiting Cook
Children’s Water Safety Club site:
cookchildrens.org/members/water-
safety-club.
And of course, everyone should
know how to swim. If you or a family
member does not know how to
swim, please visit the Euless Family
Life Center and sign up for lessons.
They are offered to individuals of
all ages. It’s never too late to learn
to swim! Please have a safe and fun
summer.

Learn to Vermicompost
(that’s with worms!)
May 2, 7 p.m.
Euless City Hall, 201 N. Ector Dr.
Do you live in a space that won’t allow outdoor
composting bins? Are you already an expert in
traditional composting and want a new challenge?
Come check out this free worm composting class to
learn how to create a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer
with the help of eco-friendly earthworms!
Becca Knutson, Tarrant Area Food Bank’s
Community Garden Coordinator will guide the
class through the steps of putting together a small,
simple vermicomposting system that can be stored
inside the home.
Registered workshop participants will be provided
with:
• One 10-gallon (or smaller) storage bin
with tight-fitting lid, courtesy of TCEQ
Master Composter grant.
• 1 lb of red wiggler worms
Workshop participants may bring:
• One sandwich bag of fruit/vegetable
scraps, frozen or fresh (no citrus)
• Several sheets of newspaper
The materials above will be enough to make one
vermicomposting system.
Space for this workshop is limited and you must
register by Monday April 29 to have a bin. Be sure
to reserve your spot today by contacting Betsy Deck

Shred Day
Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m. - noon

Protect yourself from identity theft. Bring your
unwanted personal papers and documents to
this on-site shredding event. The DFW Enrolled
Agent Society is providing residential shredding
free of charge. Papers may contain thin metals
such as staples, paperclips or even rubber
bands. Please do not bring CDs, jump drives,
three-ring binders or plastic bags. Paper may
be brought in standard size “bankers” boxes or
paper grocery bags. Up to ten boxes or bags will
be accepted from each car.
Fill the Boot for MDA
May 10, 11, 17 & 18
Various locations around Euless
Give Muscular Dystrophy the Boot by donating
to the Fill the Boot campaign. For four days
in May, Euless Firefighters will be collecting
donations for the Muscular Dystrophy
Association (MDA). They will be greeting
motorists, shoppers and others and asking
them to donate money to the MDA. Those
contributions will go to funding new research,
supporting MDA care centers and sending
children to MDA’s Summer Camp. Therefore,
when you help a firefighter fill a rubber boot,
you are helping MDA’s fight to free individuals
(and the families who love them) from the
harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related
diseases that take away physical strength,
independence and life.

5-15 yrs. Focuses on stroke refinement and proficien-
cy and build on strokes they already know such as
freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, scissor kick, and
dolphin kick. Will learn the arms for sidestroke and
butterfly, starts and turns, maintaining streamline
position. This course will build endurance that is
necessary to be able to swim efficiently while maintain-
ing a streamline position. Prerequisite: Participants
entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or
must be able to demonstrate all the completion
requirements in Level 3.

SATELLITE LIBRARY PROGRAM
The Euless Library now has a small satellite
collection at the Senior Center. A designated
table in the Senior Center Library has a variety
of large print titles and some audiobooks. The
books can be checked out and returned to the
Senior Center Library or to the Euless Library.
