HomeMy WebLinkAbout1985-04-01 Regular Meeting Parks and Recreation Board April 1 , 1985 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board was called to order at 7 : 00 P.M. , April 1 , 1985 , in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building by Chairman Ron Henson. Other members present were Mrs. Helen Lightbody, Messrs. Marland Ernest, and George Zahn. Also present were Bob Phillips , Parks Director; and Ophelia Smith, recording secretary. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Mrs. Helen Lightbody. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated March 4 , 1985 , were approved as written. I. AREA AND FACILITY REPORTS Chairman Henson, liaison for Midway Park, reported that there has been quite an increase in usage in Midway Park, both during the day and in the evening. Also, he stated that he has observed softball practice lasting until midnight. Chairman Henson stated that he has noticed lights on the tennis courts on a lot lately. Mr. Phillips stated that they have had a problem with a switch, but it has been repaired, and the lights are working properly. Chairman Henson stated that he and his family picnicked in Midway Park on Sunday recently, and the park was almost full of people. The parks are being used. Mrs . Lightbody stated that she has west . Park as her responsibility. She stated that things were in good order in West Park. Mr. Zahn, liaison for J. A. Carr, Kiddie Carr, and Oakwood Terrace Playground, stated that J. A. Carr Park and Kiddie Carr were in good shape, and activity is picking up quite a bit. Many joggers are using J. A. Carr jogging trail. Mr. Zahn stated that at Oakwood Playground all the trees Mr. Phillips planted are leafing out and look very good. Page Two, Regular Meeting, Parks & Recreation Board, April 1 , 1985 Mr. Zahn reported that the seat is off one of the swings at Oakwood Playground. Mr. Phillips answered to an inquiry regarding light on parking area at J. A. Carr that a new light has been installed replacing the malfunctioning one. Mr. Ernest stated that he had nothing to report on the Community Building, but reminded the Board members that the Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be at Midway Park on Wednesday, April 3 , 1985 , at 4 : 00 P.M. Chairman Henson reported that the City sign at Lakewood Elementary School has been destroyed by vandals. Mr. Phillips stated that one of the Live Oak trees on Ector Drive and Airport Freeway has been up-rooted by a motorist. Mr. Ernest stated that Board members agree that the Parks and Recreation Board needs to be represented at the Sesequi- centennial Celebration Day, and will have something to present to the Board on that in the near future. The Sesquicentennial Celebration Day will be in April 1986 . II . OBJECTIVES REPORTS Mr. Ernest stated that he did not have a report. Chairman Henson stated that he had talked with Mrs. Wakeley earlier, and she had indicated there were plenty of volunteers for the present time. He stated that he would contact Mrs . Wakeley regarding volunteers for the Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday. Mrs. Lightbody stated that she had nothing to report on her Objective which is "Coordinating joint meetings in the Mid- Cities area. " She stated that it was her understanding that Euless has made plans for the Sesquicentennial Celebration, and does not need to coordinate with Hurst and Bedford. Mr. Ernest stated that the cities become sanctioned, if they choose, and are selected to participate in the Sesqui- centennial Celebration. Therefore, we would by intention not involve another city. Mr. Zahn has not been assigned an Objective. III . RECREATION DIRECTOR' S REPORT Recreation classes are in the fifth week of the seven- week Spring session. Seven hundred and sixteen (716) people reg- istered, thirty (30) were refunded leaving six hundred and eighty- Page Three, Regular Meeting, Parks & Recreation Board, April 1 , 1985 six participants in this session. Spring mini-session for classes will be April 22 - May 18 , 1985. We will send the Summer Program to the printer on . April 12th. Fourth Annual Easter Egg Hunt: We anticipate around four hundred (400) persons to attend the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday, April 3 , 1985, at Midway Park. Dance Recital: On Sunday, May 19 , 1985, the Recreation Department will have a recital at Wilshire Elementary School for tap and ballet students. Senior Citizens: The Golden Age Group gave Mrs. Willie Mae McCormick a beautiful' siver tray engraved, "Willie Mae McCormick, with love and appreciation from your friends, Euless Golden Age Group 1985" as a retirement gift for her retirement from the City Council. Mrs. McCormick came to the group meeting on March 28th for lunch at Furr' s Cafeteris with the Seniors, and was given the tray at Simmons Center. The Seniors ' Spring trip will be in April. They will go to the Dallas Museums at the State Fair Grounds , have lunch, and then go to the old Farmer ' s Market before returning home. Dr. Godell , an Euless physician, will speak to the group in April on health matters concerning Senior Citizens . The 4th Annual Texas Senior Games for Fun and Fitness will be held May 15-18 , 1985 , at the University of Texas at Arlington. A group of Seniors will participate in the games on . Thursday 16th in "42" , checkers, and other activities. Last year the Seniors entered seventeen (17) participants from the Euless group. It' s a fun way to meet people from all over Texas and get a free T-Shirt. Athletics: The Youth Spring Soccer will conclude their season on Staurday, April 20 , 1985 . The Euless Girl ' s Softball Association concluded registration for Spring season on Saturday, March 30, 1985 . The Euless Girl ' s Softball Spring Leagues will begin May 7 , 1985. Euless Boy' s Baseball Association will continue registration through Saturday April 6 , 1985 . The Euless Boy' s Baseball Jamboree will be held Saturday, April 27 , 1985 , at Midway Park. On March 20 , 1985 , the Recreation Department held a coaches meeting to kick off the 1985 Spring Softball season. There were approximately sixty-five (65) attending the meeting. Page Four, Regular Meeting, Parks & Recreation Board, April 1 , 1985 Eighty-one (81) teams registered for Adult Spring Softball this season. Eleven (11) leagues with three (3) Euless leagues will play at Softball World this season. There is a waiting list of seven (7) teams that we were unable to accomodate due to loss of a field. The Spring Tennis program consists of four (4) leagues with thirty (30) participants. This is a ten (10) week program. The Adult Spring Soccer will conclude their season on Sunday, April 21, 1985. Attendance at the combined Recreation Centers, Community Building and the new building on Cullum Drive,was 1 , 752 for the month of March 1985 . IV. PARKS DIRECTOR' S REPORT Mr. Phillips stated that he has moved his office from the Simmons Center to Midway Park Shop. The Parks Crew has prepared fourteen (14) color beds in the median strip on Hwy. 10 . These beds are 12 'W x 50 ' L. They have been planted with dwarf , yellow lantana which was grown in the City Greenhouse. Mr. Phillips stated that he is using yellow lantana, copper plant, and Joseph' s coat in color beds this year. The swimming pools have been painted and leaks repaired. There is a problem with one of the diving boards at Midway Park, but it will be repaired and ready for use when the pools open on June 1st. Mowing is now at 100% The Parks Department held a disaster emergency drill with the Public Works Department on Friday, March 29th. They were satisfied with the results. COMMENTS Mr. Ernest suggested the Board give Mrs. McCormick special recognition on her retirement from the City Council in appreciation for her loyalty and support of the Parks and Recreation Board. Chairman Henson recommended that Mr. Ernest contact Mrs. ['Jakeley and plan a gift for Mrs . McCormick as a token of appreciation from the Parks and Recreation Board.
