Parks and Recreation Board
September 14, 1981
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks
and Recration Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. , September 14,
1981, in the Council Chambers of the Euless Municipal Building, by
Chairman Bobby Baker. Members present were Mesdms . Sherry Kachel
and Carolyn Park, and Mr. Kerry McCombs.
Also present were Recreation
Coordinator Julia Wakeley, Parks Coordinator Bob Phillips, and
Recording Secretary Ophelia Smith.
VISITORS
Visitor is attendance was Mayor
Pro Tem Willie Mae McCormick.
INVOCATION
The invocation was given by
Chairman Baker.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular meeting
dated August 3, 1981, were approved as written.
I .
RECREATION COORDINATOR'S REPORT
Mrs. Wakeley reported Fall registration
is presently in session and will continue through the 18th of September.
Sixty-five children and one hundred and fourteen adults have enrolled
to date.
Guitar for children and adults,
square dance, creative doll making, and intermediate bridge are new
classes added to the Fall schedule. Pre-school playtime will start
again with the beginning of the rehular school term.
A Rookie Bridge Tournament, sponsored
by the American Bridge Contract League, of which we are a part, will be
held at Simmons Recreation Center in September. Each prize is an ex-
pense-paid trip for a partnership to the Grand National Rookie Pair
Championship of the A.C.B.L, November 21, at the Sheraton=Palace Hotel,
in San Francisco.
Mr. Wakeley stated Euless has two
Women's Recreation Leagues in softball making a total of fifteen teams .
There are five leagues in Men's Recreation with a total of thirty-six
teams . Men's Open Softball has two leagues with sixteen teams, making

a total of sixty-seven teams involved in Fall softball.
Mrs. Wakeley stated a Flag Football
League is being planned to begin at the close of Fall softball.
The soccer season officially opens
Saturday, September 19. Euless has four hundred and fifty-four youngs-
ters involved in this sport.
Mrs . Wakeley reported twenty people
participated in the clinic for soccer coaches held in Arlington on
August 22nd.
II.
PARKS COORDINATOR'S REPORT
Bear Creek: Mr. Phillips reported
trees have been trimmed, irrigation rapairs completed, and rye grass
sown on the ballfields.
Midway Park: Dead limbs and trees
have been removed, irrigation system repaired, fences repaired around
swimming pool and shop area, and some repairs to fences around ball-
fields have been made. A cottonwood tree causing problems with the
filter system at the swimming pool has been removed.
West Park: Rye grass has been sown
on the soccer fields, new goal posts installed, and fence has been repair-
ed. The Soccer Association paid for the new goal posts, and Doug Rose
installed them.
Carr Park: Trees have been trimmed,
concrete walkway installed around rose garden, jogging trail has been
turf-shaped and two loads of wood shavings applied.
Mr. Phillips reported regular mainten-
ance is continuing in all the parks, right-of-ways, well lots, Service
Center, and Fire Station No. 2. Harwood soccer fields have been mowed
and made ready for soccer season. All playground equipment has been
repaired on schoolground parks .
"No Alcoholic Beverages" signs have
been installed at the entrance of all parks.
The bridge at the entrance of Kiddie
Carr Park has been re-built with a smooth surface floor and rails on
either side.
Signs stating the lights must be
turned off at 12:00 A.M. (Midnight) have been placed on all the ball-
fields and tennis courts.
Mr. Phillips stated the ground
has been cleared and leveled in Blessing Branch Park, and made ready
for planting rye grass. The area around the parking lot will be

landscaped at a later date.
III.
DISCUSSION OF EULESS GIRL' S
SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION
Chairman Baker reviewed a letter from
Citty Attorney Bob McFarland regarding a controversey within the affairs
of the Euless Girl's Softball Association.
Chairman Baker stated the letter
answered all the questions the Board had regarding the dispute.

PARK APPOINTMENTS
Chairman Baker assigned parks to the
Board members as listed:
Sherry Kachel West Park
Caroly Park Wilshire and Midway
Kerry McCombs Bear Creek and Lakewood
Billy Owens J. A. Carr and Kiddie Carr
Don Calhoun Civic Center
Bobby Baker South Euless
Mr. Kerry McCombs volunteered to be
responsible for conditions at Harwood Soccer Fields .
