HomeMy WebLinkAbout1980-05-12 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board May 12, 1980 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7: 10 P.M. in the Council Chambers of Euless City Hall by Chairman Don Calhoun. Other members present were Mrs . Sherry Kachel, and Messrs . Billy Owens and Bobby Baker. (Absent were Mrs . Zella Stierwalt and Mr. Jay Heilman. ) Also present were Parks and Recreation Director Larry Morgan, and Recording Secretary Ophelia Smith. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Chairman Don Calhoun. VISITORS Visitor in attendance was Mrs . Willie Mae McCormick. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated March 10, 1980, were approved as written. I. PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT J. A. Carr Park Mr. Morgan stated that the lighting project at J. A. Carr Park has been completed. Little Bear Creek Park Mr. Morgan stated that the path has been poured from the street on the east side of the park to the creek, and the crossover has been completed. On the west side the loop to the left has been partially constructed. Most of the dirt work has been completed. The second crossover has been partially constructed. The berm has been raised to the desired height for the play area. Inside the berm has been lowered with railroad ties standing on end encircling the area which is approximately 50'x40' . • (Page Two, Regular Meeting, Park & Recreation Board, May 12, 1980) The sidewalks have been poured on the west end from the parking lot curving around to the ballfield connecting with the slab on the ballfield, then to the top of the pavalion. We have constructed the steps to the pavalion making a landing, three steps, a landing, then three more steps, and another landing. People in wheelchairs will be able to enter from the west side of the pavilion or they can enter from the south end off the jogging trail. We have leveled the outfield of the baseball field, and applied clay to the infield. The electric company, will complete installation of the lights as soon as all materials are received. Then we will .start trenching for the irriga- tion system. • The bids have been received for restroom facilities, a fireplace, and handrails. The Public Works Department shaped the banks that lead lead to the pavilion. Now they are ready for planting grass. • In answer to a question from Mr. Bobby Baker, Mr. Morgan stated that the Federal Grant has been approved for Phase II at Little Bear Creek, and we have received over $250,000. Greenhouse Mr. Morgan stated that approximately 2, 500 plants from the greenhouse have been planted. The majority were planted in the color beds in the City Hall area. These plants were grown from seed in the greenhouse. Recreation Mr. Morgan stated that we have made some new approaches to attract people in the field of recreation. We have had two fishing seminars recently. The first one was conducted by Bill Clements, bass angler of the year. We will go into other areas such as gun safety, hunting, skiing, etc. ,Summer programs will be mailed this week. It is one of the best programs we have put together. We are getting more response from ladies exercise, aerobics, bridge, and western dance for the adults . The children still favor gymnastics, judo, boy's weight lifting, and swimming. We are working on the swimming pools making ready for opening date which is officially May 31st. We will be open one week prior to this date for the sixth grade class swim party which we do traditionally each year. • (Pale Three, Regular Meeting, Park & Recreation Board, May. 12, 1980) We are offering lessons in magic this session which will be taught by Craig Waldron. He gave the City of Euless a boost recently on his T.V. show on Channel 11. Senior Citizens The Senior Citizens have added bowling to their calendar of events. They will bowl according to interest shown and participation. They have extra shopping trips planned, luncheons, and monthly birthday party. - We are searching for a sponsor for the Senior Citizen group. Day Camp Mr. Morgan stated that we plan to install basketball goals to Kiddie Carr Park. we are replacing the crossover bridge with flat boards . North Texas University is planning to use our Day Camp as a focal point for one of their classes in Community Development. Midway Park Pool Mr. • Morgan stated that we have built a new pump house at Midway Park. We have refinished the existing bath house both inside and out. We have built..a shed on the back of the office to house the coke and candy machines . A section has been enclosed for tools and miscellaneous equipment. We have had the pool sandblasted, patched, and painted the inside and the lip. We have built a privacy fence on the outside of the "old catch-all" shed on the back of the storage house. We have built a slatted fence on the inside of the pool area to block the view to the pump house area and the pen. We have purchased new fence material for the pool area which we will begin construction in the near future. We are building the fence from the north side of the office area, straight down from the existing fence, and will 900 back to the south in front of the office area. Then we will 900 back into the building. We will place a gate in front of the office, area . Then dropping back about 12' we will build a fence without a gate a gate to prevent people from entering the restrooms from outside the pool area to prevent vandalism. We are using heavier guage wire on the new fence. We will segregate the area with grass from the walkways, candy machines, and coke machine. This area will be for smaller children and their parents or guardians . • • (Page Four, Regular Meeting, Park & Recreation Board, May 12, 1980) We will be replacing some of the elm trees which have attacked by borers. We were alloted $20,000 to work with on Midway pool. We have spent $9,800 to date. • Athletics Softball is going great. Men's softball had t2 teams in the fall with 780 people. This summer they have 45 teams with 675 people with less field space to play because boy's baseball will use Midway Park. When Little Bear Creek is completed we will certainly be able to put it to use. Women's softball had 14 teams in the fall. This summer they have 24 teams 24 teams with 360 ladies participating. Men's basketball had 14 teams in the winter with the same number of teams this summer. Women's basketball had 7 teams in the winter, but no summer league. Tennis will have leagues and lessons . Several ladies are presently participating. Mixed. volleyball has six teams with seventy-two people. • • Mixed softball is something new this year and has 4 teams with 80 people. Ladies soccer which has members from Grapevine, Hurst, Euless, and other surrounding cities has 5 teams. Boy's baseball is very active with numerous participants. We have repaired 30 lights at Central ballfield. We have $7, 500 in the budget to repair lights at the tennis courts and ball fields. The obstacle course at J. A. Can Park has been completed. The Police and Fire Departments will utilize this course for in-house training and new applicants . Restrooms at West Park are better portable units than we have been furnished previously.
