APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the last regular meeting dated December 10, 1979, were approved as written. (January 13, 1980, Field Trip) I. PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTORIS REPORT-- Soccer Mr. Morgan stated that he invited Mr. George Qualls, President of the Soccer Association, to the meeting to air potential problems in the up-coming season. Mr. Qualls declined stating that he was very busy registering for the coming season, and could foresee nothing that would cause any problems . Recreation Mr. Morgan stated that the Recreation Department is registering for the Spring season. We offer an extremely varied program, but participation is low in crafts which has caused us to the entire program. We plan to offer more outdoor and strenuous exercise classes in the future. Mr. Morgan stated that people have been asking for an aerobic exercise program which is very popular at this time. Since Jackie Sorenson, developer of aerobic dancing, has reserved all rights to her technique, we would need a license to teach her method exclusively. We do offer a ladies exercise program which is very popular, and we plan to incorporate a course in our program which we will call Aerobic Style Exercise. (Page Two, Regular Meeting, Park &_Recreat lion Board, February-11, 1980) Mr. Morgan stated that due to the change in lifestyle of our community people are becoming more family oriented, and do things as a family unit. For example, mixed volleyball is going quite well at present. Mr. Morgan stated that we have written to Austin for statistics on the number of teenagers, number of housewives, and number of working housewives in this area. We believe this will be helpful in planning a program attractive to all ages. Competition is very keen in this area, but we feel we can put a program together that will be attractive to the majority of residents . Mr. Morgan stated that we have added a Vitamaster Rowing Machine to the equipment in the weight room. The weight room has received over $1,300 since it was installed in March 1979. With the charge of 50 per hour this means the room is being used. Mr. Morgan stated that Western Dance is going quite well. People are really enjoying that class . Athletics Mr. Morgan stated that the electric light poles have been installed at the ballfield in Bear Creek Park. The electricians are waiting for the ground to dry before finishing the install- „_.. ation. Plans are to cover the lights with Lexan for protection from vandalism. We are hosting a Polar Bear Tournament on February 15th. and 16th. Twenty teams have registered for this tourna- ment. We will be co-hosting a Men's Regional Softball Tournament with the City of Bedford on February 22nd. and 23rd. The City of Euless has the only Women's T.A.A.F. (Texas Amateur Athletic Federation) League in Tarrant County. The City of Euless hosted a Women's Basketball Tournament on January 25th. , 26th. , and 27th. Seven teams played in the tournament. Pools Mr. Morgan stated that repairs to Midway Park are under way. The pump house has been torn down. The pump room will be replaced. The pool will be sandblasted and painted with emulsified cement coating. Water lines underneath the pool will be repaired. Approxi- mately two-thirds of the fence will be replaced which will be laced with redwood slats to insure privacy and hopefully prevent vandalism. A new diving stand will be installed at the shallow end of the pool making three diving stands at this pool. Old rotten siding will be replaced on the office building and restrooms, and they will be sanded and painted. South Euless and Wilshire pools are being made ready for the summer program. (Pa e Three, Reaular Meeting, Park & Recreation Board, February_ 11, 1980) Parks Mr. Morgan stated that the ballfield in Bear Creek Park will be ready for the Spring season. Concrete pads are ready for installation of picnic tables and grills . A dry weather crossing has been built spanning the creek. The Parks crew has moved several tons of dirt to make ready for the installation of the fence on the west end of the park. Mr. Morgan stated that with the help of the Public Works Department repairs have been made to Midway Park from the damage caused by contractors installing a drainage ditch. Greenhouse The greenhouse located in Kiddie Carr Park is now in full operation. Over 10,000 plants have been propagated which will be used this Spring. Flower seeds have started to germinate and will go into the color beds throughout the parks and City Hall area. Fruit from our native trees located in the parks and nuts from red oaks and live oaks were planted, have germinated, and are presently growing in the greenhouse. There are over 200 pecans, 100 red oaks, and 50 live oaks. With the exception of a small expenditure of the normal prepara- tional material, there will be no cost for these plant materials other than the manhours required to gather the cuttings and fruit for propaga- tion and planting. The Park Department was donated a large number of crape myrtles which we dug and planted at various locations in our parks and at Fire Station #2. The remainder we planted in our ever growing tree farm. II. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7 :50 P. M. : ___Lil v -At ,/ -(/' ''-'1 , 9 Chairman
