HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-02-12 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board February 12, 1979 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:05 p.m. , in the Council Chambers of Euless City Hall by Chairman Don Calhoun. Other members present were Messrs. Winn Porter, Billy Owens, and Mrs. Sherry Kachel . (Members absent were Mr. Jay Heilman and Mrs. Zella Stierwalt.) Also present were Park and Recreation Coordinator Larry Morgan and Recording Secretary Maurine Butler. INVOCATION The invocation was given by Chairman Don Calhoun. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated January 8, 1979, were approved as written. PARK AND RECREATION COORDINATOR' S REPORT RECREATION Mr. Morgan stated the schedule for the spring session of classes at Simmons Recreation Center has been mailed to the citizens. He stated registration begins February 12 and ends February 16, with classes beginning on February 26. He stated they are offering a new class in microwave cooking in cooperation with the Tarrant County Home Economics Department. Mr. Morgan stated they are looking forward to summer day camp and are adding some new activities. He stated a two story hotel with a balcony has been built in Kiddie Carr Park for the children and some of the day camp classes will be in this building. Mr. Morgan stated the weight machine has been received and they are working on a program that will benefit the police and fire department employees. He stated a time will be designated exclusively for families to use the machine, with a paid assistant present. The machine will be available to the public within a week. ATHLETIC PROGRAM Mr. Morgan stated the men' s basketball program is coming to a close. A tournament between the winners and losers is planned. (Page Two, Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, February 12, 1979) Mr. Morgan stated the men' s slow pitch tournament will be held on the coming weekend with sixteen teams registered. He stated the women' s basketball tournament will be held in the Community Building on the coming weekend also, with teams from all over the state. He stated he hopes to get television coverage on the slow pitch and women' s basketball tournament. Mr. Morgan stated he had talked to the television people about getting coverage on the program "PM Magazine" on Simmons and Carr Park. PARK PROGRAM Mr. Morgan stated they are getting the baseball and softball fields ready for use. Mr. Morgan stated the Soccer Association presented a list of things to be done to the soccer field located on airport property. The Soccer Association agreed to reimburse the City for materials used. He stated they are attempting to accomplish their requests; an entrance and exit gate have been installed and a parking lot area has been made. The parking area was made with discarded guy wire cable and poles from Texas Power and Light Company. Trees have been removed to make two more fields. Mr. Morgan stated they are continuing the landscape work on the grounds around the City Hall . The trees and shrubs are in and they are reworking the irrigation. He stated plans are drawn to put in irrigation at Carr Park. Mr. Morgan stated they are working on the swimming pools to get them ready for use. Each year they have to scrub and paint the pools and it takes about a month of steady work to get them ready. Mr. Morgan stated the wooden cabinets in the South Euless and Wilshire pools have been replaced with cement blocks and finished with a flat block to make a counter top, to do business over. A decorative brick was used to give a view of the pool . Mr. Morgan stated they have had a lot of vandalism at South Euless and Wilshire but have not had anyone get into the pools. He stated some improvements have been made that will make access to the pools more difficult for vandals. He stated a roof is being built over the entrance area and they are moving the vending machines out under this shelter. The machines were against the door and to get to the pool you had to go through the shower area. III . COMMENTS Mr. Porter made a suggestion the next time the sign which is located in the median on Ector Drive is painted, a (Page Three, Regular Meeting, Perk and Recreation Board, February 12, 1979) luminous paint should be used so the letters can be seen at night. Mr. Owens stated he thought the schedule put out by the recreation staff was very nice and he knew a lot of time and work was put into it. He stated he would like to see a little more money spent and future schedules be sent to a printer. Mr. Owens inquired if any handball courts are planned in the future? Mr. Morgan stated there are no handball courts planned that he is aware of other than those in Phase II of Little Bear Creek Park. He stated they have a maintenance problem on the handball courts at the high school when it rains. He stated they have not had any vandalism on the lights or switches at the handball courts. Mr. Owens inquired if there had been any research on getting plumbing in at West Park? Mrs. Kachel stated she had talked to Mr. Joe Fuchs regarding this and he said he did not believe it would be feasible until the property to the west of the park is developed. Mr. Owens stated perhaps the restrooms in the park could be moved. Mr. Morgan stated he has changed companies on the portable restrooms and will have to wait and see if conditions improve. Mrs. Kachel stated there are still no lights at West Euless Park. Mr. Morgan stated that he had called TP&L about the lights. Mrs. Kachel inquired if the second exercise station on the jogging trail at Carr Park is supposed to have rings? Mr. Morgan stated the rings are on order. IV.
