HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-01-08 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Board January 8, 1979 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. , in the Council Chambers of Euless City Hall by Park and Recreation Coordinator Larry Morgan. Members present were Messrs. Jay Heilman, Billy Owens; Mmes. Zella Stierwalt and Sherry Kachel . (Absent were Chairman Don Calhoun and Mr. Winn Porter.) Also present was Recording Secretary Maurine Butler. VISITORS Visitor in attendance was Mrs. Willie Mae McCormick. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated December 11 , 1978, were approved as written. PARK AND RECREATION COORDINATOR' S REPORT PARKS Mr. Morgan stated the jogging trail in Little Bear Creek Park has been cleared, and all of the brush hauled away by the Public Works Department. He stated the leased bulldozer was used a total of 50 hours. A fence was installed to keep out stray cattle. Mr. Morgan stated in cooperation with the City of Irving, using their tree spade and their operator, a total of 63 ,large trees were dug in Little Bear Creek Park; 38 of these trees were planted on the grounds of City Hall , South Euless Park, Fire Station No. Two, and the remaining 25 trees were given to the City of Irving. He stated 15 smaller trees were hand dug and placed in the greenhouse to be planted when there is time. Mr. Morgan stated painting, cleaning and restoration of old equipment is being done in the other city parks and they will be working on the two major areas of landscaping on the City Hall grounds. Plants taken from the cuttings around the City complex and from the City of Arlington, will be used in this landscaping. ATHLET ICS Mr. Morgan stated a women' s double elimination basketball tournament will be held in the Civic Center gym on (Page Two, Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, January 8, 1979) the following weekend, with teams from Dallas, Lewisville, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Farmers Branch participating. He stated a polar bear softball tournament will be held on field No. 2 and 3, Midway Park, in February. The tournament will be limited to 16 teams; 8 teams have already indicated an interest. He stated the polar bear softball tournament is something new and he hopes to have good press coverage. Mr. Morgan stated there has been some controversy in TAAF flag football concerning seven and eight man teams and some areas of the state are wanting a change in the rules. He stated he is conducting a state survey to find out what is wanted. Mr. Morgan stated a basketball team has been organized with city personnel participating. Volleyball standards have been ordered and teams will be organized when these standards are received. He stated he would like to get personnel involved in more activities and plans to have a City Play Day in late spring. Mr. Morgan stated they will soon be taking applications for summer part time employees; 85 were employed last summer. He stated they have an internship program with North Texas State University and all involved in the program are in the recreation and physical education field. He stated this program should cut down on people quitting in the middle of the summer. RECREATION Mr. Morgan stated recreation classes are coming to a close with the next classes beginning in February and the summer classes will begin in June. He stated the women' s exercise, ceramics, and belly dancing classes have received the most response. He stated the classes offer the citizens a lot for a small amount of money. Mr. Morgan stated they plan to research some of the other cities and try to have some new and different programs to offer the citizens. II . COMMENTS Mr. Heilman stated he had been asked why the City of Euless doesn' t sponsor a jogging club; the City of Hurst and Arlington have one. Mr. Morgan stated he did not know of an organized jogging group or club in Euless, however, he would be glad to help organize a club or provide the facilities. Mr. Morgan stated in reference to the newspaper coverage on the jogging trail last month, the photographer did take a picture, but the coverage was not as good as he had hoped for. (Paqe Three, Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Board, January 8, 1979) Mr. Owens stated that he had noticed the South Euless Park sign which is near the South Euless Elementary School is in a bad location and might possibly make it difficult for someone to find the park. Mr. Morgan stated there were two plans on the sign; to place it on school property, which they were not in favor of, or place it at the present location. The sign could not be made larger because of the guy wire that is above it. Mrs. Stierwalt stated she had received some inquires about some type of seating on the west side of the pool at South Euless Park, for mothers to sit and watch their children. Mr. Morgan stated there are two tables on the inside of the pool area where people can sit, however, there is not a complete view of the pool . Mr. Owens inquired about the creek at Carr Park. Mr. Morgan stated some debris still comes from Little Bear Creek when it rains but the problem has improved. He stated he had been in contact with the gas company and there is a chance the two gas lines that catch the trash, can be moved. He stated the bridge can be raised about two feet above the ground level and the trash can pass on down the creek. III . ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m. (—) Chairman
