HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-04-23 Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Committee April 23, 1973 CALL TO ORDER ..� The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Committee was called to order at 7:45 P. M. in the Conference Room of Euless City Hall . Members present were Chairman Charles Hunt, Jay Theder, Jack Stoltze, Ivan Gregory and Councilman Copher. (Absent was Mrs. Griffin.) Also present were Park and Recreation Director Frank Lindsey and Recording Secretary Kerry Brown. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes of the regular meeting dated March 19, 1973 were approved as written. PARK AND RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Teenage Night at the Community Center Mr. Lindsey stated that the "Teenage Night" has been delayed temporarily because the supervisor, a student at North Texas State University, has a heavy study load at this time. The tournaments for the "Teenage Night" have been scheduled, but there may be some rescheduling. Recreation Bus Mr. Theder asked the condition of the bus for transporting the children for the summer program. Mr. Lindsey stated that reports given to him are that the bus is in top condition. Swimming Pool Tickets Mr. Lindsey reported the tickets for the swimming pool have been printed. He commented that the price of a season ticket is twelve dollars and fifty cents ($12.50) , (formerly $10.00) . He stated these tickets will go on sale May 1 , 1973. Mr. Theder inquired if a campaign will be held to sell the tickets. Mr. Lindsey stated that they may have a "Splash Day" with games and prizes. Wilshire Neighborhood Pool Mr. Theder stated that the pool is finished with exception of asphalt on the parking lot. He also stated the plaque is finished and will be put into concrete to discourage vandalism. (Page Two, Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Committee, April 23, 1973) II . SPLASH DAY Mr. Theder inquired about a dedication ceremony to open the pools. He suggested opening both pools on the same day about two hours apart. Mr. Stoltze suggested to have "Splash Day" on the Saturday before school is out. Mr. Theder moved to have "Splash Day" and suggested Mr. Lindsey set a day at the weekend prior to school being out and arrange Dedication Ceremonies. Councilman Copher seconded the motion and the vote is as follows: Ayes: Messrs. Theder, Copher, Gregory, Stoltze, and Hunt Nays: None Chairman Hunt declared the motion carried. III . PROPOSED SKATING RINK Councilman Copher inquired the opinion of the members of a new skating rink? Mr. Gregory stated he is against it for reason of past experience with skating rinks. Councilman Copher stated that he is opposed to the location. He stated, if approved, the rink will operate with a specific use permit and can be cancelled with cause. IV. SOUTH EULESS POOL Mr. Theder stated that the bath house at the South Euless Pool is constructed so that persons may climb on top, which places them inside the facility and there has been some destruction of equipment. Mr. Stoltze commented that this matter should be investigated, and the wall changed in order to eliminate this problem. V. DISCUSSION OF PROPOSAL - SOUTH EULESS POOL DRIVEWAY AND SIDEWALK. Mr. Theder reported that the School District is considering a proposal to deed the north side of the property at the South Euless Elementary School for a driveway and land sufficient for a sidewalk on the south of the driveway. He commented that there are twelve Oak (Page Three, Regular Meeting Park and Recreation Committee, April 23, 1973) trees that the School Board does not want destroyed. He stated that the School Board would like a formal request from the City concerning this project. Councilman Copher stated that he is in favor of the proposal and will make a recommendation to the City Council . VI . CITY FACILITY AT 134 SHEPPARD DRIVE PROPOSED FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES Members of the Park and Recreation Committee agreed that the house owned by the City at 134 Sheppard Drive would be a good location for the Park and Recreation Directors office and that a section of the house might also be used for a meeting place for Girl Scout groups. The Committee recommends this item be called to the attention of the City Council . VII . PROPOSED PARK SITE ON LITTLE BEAR CREEK Mr. Theder stated he does not have a report at this time. VIII . DISCUSSION: PROPOSED 1973-74 PARK AND RECREATION BUDGET Councilman Copher moved that three members of the Park and Recreation Committee meet in work session to discuss the proposed 1973-74 Park and Recreation budget and make a report to the remainder of the Committee. Mr. Gregory seconded the motion and the vote is as follows: Ayes: Messrs. Copher, Gregory, Theder, Stoltze, and Hunt Nays: None Chairman Hunt declared the motion carried. IX. DISCUSSION OF USE OF BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS AT MIDWAY PARK Replying to a question by Mr. Hunt, Mr. Lindsey stated that Saturday nights will be a good time for church soft- ball ; that Midway Park Field 3 will be reserved for churches and all other fields will be for make-up games for Little League teams. .
