HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-01-12 • Regular Meeting of the Park and Recreation Committee January 12, 1970 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Committee was called to order at 7:50 P. M. , in the Conference Room of Euless City Hall by Chairman Charles Hunt . Members present are as follows: Mr. Ivan Gregory and Mrs . David Martin. (Absent were Messrs . James Kilmer and Jay Theder. ) Also present were Mayor Albert C. "Pete" Krause, Park and Recreation Director Frank Lindsey and Recording Secretary Della Houy. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the regular meeting dated December 4, 1969, were approved as written. 1 . INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBER Chairman Charles Hunt introduced Mrs . David Martin, as a new member to the Committee. Mrs. Martin stated that she has lived in Euless for five (5) years , has two (2) children and is originally from North Carolina. Mrs. Martin stated that she was a member of the Charter Amendment Committee and is interested in city government . II . SETTING REGULAR MEETING DATE Chairman Hunt stated that he had talked with several of the Councilmen and the Mayor and they suggested that the Park and Recreation Committee have a regular meeting night. The Committee set the third Monday night of each month as their regular meeting night. The next regular meeting will be Monday, February 16, 1970, at 7:30 P. M. , in the conference Room of Euless City Hall . (Page Two, Regular Meeting, Park. and Recreation Committee, January 12, 1970) III . COMMITTEE REPORT Chairman Hunt requested that the Committee Report on Park and Recreation Policies and Procedures be tabled until the next meeting, as Mr. Kilmer and Mr. Theder were unable to be at the meeting. IV. MAYOR'S REPORT Chairman Hunt introduced Mayor Krause, and asked the Mayor his ideas and suggestions for the Committee. Mayor Krause stated that the employees in the Park and Recreation Department are doing a good job. Mayor Krause stated that the No. 1 item for the Park and Recreation Committee is a swimming pool for the citizens of Euless . Mayor Krause stated he would like to see a new swimming pool in the City of Euless , as soon as possible, this summer if possible. Mayor Krause stated that the Committee should make recommendations on the purchase of land and new park sites to the Planning and Zoning Commission, and other recommendations direct to the City Council . Mayor Krause stated that the Park and Recreation Committee should be a Committee that will show accomplishments. V. PARK SITE LOCATIONS Chairman Hunt stated that the City has been offered 15 acres of land in the Trailwood Addition for $2,000.00 an acre. Mr. Hunt stated that this land borders on Trailwood Drive and goes along Big Bear Creek. Mr. Hunt stated that there is also an additional 15 acres fronting on North Main Street that could be purchased for $3,000.00 an acre. Mr. Hunt stated that there would be a problem of some flooding at this site, but if some type of flood control were a part of the development, this site would make a pretty park. Mr. Gregory stated that he and his son had walked the length of Bear Creek and had noticed the water marks on the trees, and the water could cause damage to permanent structures. Mr. Hunt stated that the City Engineers should be consulted and a study made of the flooding situation. (Page Three, Regular Meeting, Park and Recreation Committee, January 12, 1970) Chairman Hunt requested the City Secretary to contact Mr. Bill Ratliff, City Engineer, to make a study of the possibility of this park site, concerning the flood control . Chairman Hunt stated that Mr. Gregory is to meet with the Mayor of Bedford and inquire about the future development of West Euless Park. Chairman Hunt presented copies of a proposed school site in the northwest part of Euless. Mr. Hunt stated that he met with the City Manager and discussed the possibility of trading eight (8) or ten (10) acres of the West Euless Park to the School District for a park site on that property. Mr. Hunt stated that this property is north of Ash Lane, in the Bob Eden property. Mr. Hunt stated that there is a rustic atmosphere and there would be no problems with flood control . VI . SWIMMING POOL Chairman Hunt stated that the City is in need of another swimming pool , and he would like to see a regional type pool constructed, in the center of the City. In answer to a question, Mr. Hunt stated that West Euless Park is too far on the outskirts of the population to benefit the majority of the citizens. Mr. Lindsey stated that the pool needs to be within walking or bicycle riding distance of the population. Mayor Krause stated that he would like to see one regional pool in the north part of Euless and smaller pools in the Wilshire Park and South Euless Park area. In reply to a question, Mr. Lindsey stated that the City needs a pool for competitive swimming as well as recreation swimming, so more young people can take part in competitive swimming. Chairman Hunt stated that he would like to have a work session and discuss plans and sites for a new swimming pool . Mr. Hunt stated that the Committee should have some type of plans to present to the Planning and Zoning Commission in the immediate future. Chairman Hunt called the work session for Monday, January 19, 1970, at 7:30 P. M. , in the Conference Room of Euless City Hall .
