MEMBERS STAFF OTHERS Marcia Brown Kate Lyon LuAnn Portugal Priscilla Cauley Karan Jasper Councilman Leon Hogg Betty Fuller Jan Hogg Beverly Leake Chris McAllister Mike McGehee Barney Snitz Adriane Weinstein Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:00p.m. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the June 3,2010 minutes. Adriane Weinstein made the motion to accept the minutes and Marcia Brown seconded the motion. WELCOME VISITORS: Chairman Mike McGehee and Library Administrator,Kate Lyon welcomed LuAnn Portugal, Councilman Leon Hogg and Jan Hogg to the meeting. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Kate presented the July and August monthly statistics. The July statistics show that it was the busiest month ever for the library. Verlon Thompson was a huge success with 137 in attendance. This year Mike Brown and Brian Burns opened the show for Verlon. Masterworks Programs: Jazz group Fingerprints will be performing on Monday, September 13th On Monday, September 27th at 7:00pm we will have a performance of the Pulitzer Prize winning play, "Love Letters" in the meeting room. Summer Reading Club Program Statistics: Youth: 965 signed up--41% completion of program and turned in reading logs Teens: 78 signed up-46%completion of program and turned in reading logs Adults: 618 signed up-49% completion of program and turned in reading logs Euless Library Foundation Annual Meeting is on September 16th and it will be a business meeting only. Scott Murray was scheduled to speak at the meeting but the board decided to reschedule him in the spring. The Friend's of the Library Fall Book Sale is scheduled for Friday, October 8 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, Saturday, October 9 from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday,October 10 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Harpist's for Peace Day is Sunday,October 10. We will have harpists playing all afternoon at the library in front of Blooms of Enlightenment. Page 2 Library Board Minutes September 2,2010 Byki,which stands for Before You Know It, is our new language database. Patrons will need to register here at the library. After they have registered they will be able to access the database from their home computers. We have received eighteen free CD's for MP3 players from Recorded Books. Good News from the city! The budget has been approved and it is a good budget with no reduction of hours or staff. The aquarium will stay and we will have one Security Guard,Andy Yamasaki, Monday through Friday from 3:00pm until the library closes. DISCUSSIONS: 1. Mike McGehee is very pleased with the library and City Administration for all of the support they give to the library and other city departments. Mike also reported that the ELF tile project is moving along and they have received some new tiles from the artist. The tiles are on display in the Reference Department. He also reports that ELF was very pleased to hear that the Library Board agreed to purchase the Red Oak Tree tile for$300. 00. The cost for each board member is $38.00 and if possible please bring your check to the October meeting. 2. Barney Snitz announced that board member,Chris McAllister,received the AWARE Award of Excellence in Teaching for 2010. 3. Adriane Weinstein shared our library stats with the library in Salt Lake City. They were very impressed with our numbers and programs. One of the programs the Salt Lake City Library offers to children is"read off your fine" and she thought that would be a good idea to look into that for our library. CITIZEN INPUT: Councilman Leon Hogg shared with the board that the budget has been passed with no increase in taxes with no impact on the citizens. The city has not experienced any increase in taxes for 17 years. The council has approved the new homes to be built by Bloomfield Development on the McCormick estate, former home of Willie Mae McCormick. There will be approximately 27 homes built ranging from 1700sgft to 4000sqft and the developer has promised to save as many trees as possible. Discussion with Councilman Hogg regarding the Harrington property. LuAnn Portugal was happy to hear about the new book formats and, as always,enjoys the displays that Ellen puts together each month. ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Barney Snitz and seconded by Adriane Weinstein.
