MEMBERS STAFF OTHERS Marcia Brown Kate Lyon LuAnn Portugal Priscilla Cauley Karan Jasper Denise Miles Betty Fuller Beverly Leake--absent Chris McAllister Mike McGehee Barney Snitz Adriane Weinstein Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:00p.m. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the February 5,2009 minutes. Betty Fuller made the motion to accept the minutes and Barney Snitz seconded the motion. WELCOME VISITORS: Chairman Mike McGehee and Library Administrator, Kate Lyon welcomed LuAnn Portugal and Denise Miles. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Kate reported that statistics continue to be outstanding. Two new statistics have been added to the report. We will now include Wireless Internet and JobView Job Kiosk. The Wireless Internet service and the JobView Kiosk are very popular with the public and the number of users increase monthly. The JobView Kiosk information is also available on-line but the public seems to like using the kiosk. The owner of the service will be adding part-time positions available for the summer months. Masterworks Programs: March 9th—Threadneedle Street and April 13t Rhett Butler. Both programs will be in the Meeting Room starting at 7pm. Please come and invite your friends and neighbors. Friends of the Library Book Sale: Friday,April 17th is the Early Bird Special from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. They charge $5.00 to attend the Early Bird Special(free admission to all ELF members). It is free and open to the public on Saturday, from 10:00am to 5:00pm,and on Sunday the hours are from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Boards and Commissions Dinner is Monday, March 23`d at the Texas Star. The dinner starts at 6:30pm. Be sure to RSVP to either Karan or Susan Crim. April Closings at the Library: The official Spring Holiday for employees is on Friday,April 10th. This year the city has announced the Library will be closed on Easter weekend on both Saturday(4/11)and Sunday(4/12). Arbor Daze is the last weekend of April and the Library will be closed on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday April 26th. Youth will be working in the KidsZone tent that weekend. If you can or want to volunteer that weekend let Rachel or anyone in Youth know and they will put you on the list. The Youth Department is also working with Parks and Recreation on Saturday, March 7th with the"Story Walk"in Bob Eden Park. This is to encourage families to walk the trail and read the story as they go along. The theme is"Ducks"and Rachel will be dressed in her best duck costume. This event is from 10:00 a.m. until noon. National Library Week is April 12-18. This is also the week we will be doing our annual Edible Book Contest between the staff. The entries will be on display in the Board Room starting Wednesday, April 15t. Judging the entries will be at 4pm on Wednesday,April 15t. Our judges this year: Barney Snitz, Carolyn Marshall, Linda Martin, Leon Hogg,and Glenda Hartsell-Shelton. One of the categories is Patron's Favorite so be sure to stop by and vote. The last day for voting is Sunday,April 19th Downloadable book testing continues and everything is looking very good. The staff is working on the process to help the • patrons get their accounts set up. Kate will present the new service at the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 14th. DISCUSSIONS: 1. Barney Snitz shared with the group that the Library Foundation has 59 spine tiles left to sell,and the Friends of the Library book sale is in April and volunteers are needed. He also handed out the Threadneedle Street program flyers to people at the airport. 2. Priscilla Cauley inquired if the library has any resourses for people with literacy challenges. Kate referred her to the Reference Desk for a list they have available for the public. 3. Chris McAllister inquired about the Pet Food Drive. Kate shared with the group that the library sent two full boxes of pet food to the food bank and that most of the items were given by the staff. 4. Adriane Weinstein inquired about the schedule for ESL classes and that she would be glad to volunteer. 5. Mike McGehee inquired about the demand on our computers. Kate said we have increase usage of the computers with so many people looking for employment, but the wait time is not excessive and we have not had any complaints. 6. Marcia Brown also announced our Threadneedle Street program at Trinity High School. 7. Betty Fuller wanted to give"kudos"to all of the library staff for all the wonderful things they do for the patrons and for all the hard work they do to make the library such a vital part of the community. 8. CITIZEN INPUT: LuAnn Portugal: The library is such an important place to help the public,especially now with our economic issues,to find jobs and work on resumes. Denise Miles: Kudos to Rachel Feltenberger on the work she did with the Parks Department"Story Walk." ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn.
