Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:00p.m.
DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the January 8,2009
minutes. Marcia Brown made the motion to accept the minutes and Adriane Weinstein seconded the motion.
WELCOME VISITORS: Chairman Mike McGehee and Library Administrator,Kate Lyon welcomed LuAnn Portugal
and Youth Librarian, Rachel Feltenberger.
REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR:
Kate introduced Rachel Feltenberger, Senior Youth Librarian,to the board.
Kate reported that statistics continue to be outstanding including the Wireless Access Stats. She also shared with the
board the after school issues seem to be much better, but as time gets closer to the end of school we may need to have
staff in the lobby again to help keep things calm.
The staff has completed the library inventory. The library currently has 104,000 items available for the public and out of
this total only 1/10t of 1%could not be located. We did not have any missing DVD's!! Most libraries do not inventory
but libraries that participate in an inventory process say that 3%is acceptable. The library has a good process of tracking
books that are not returned. Staff makes contact with the borrower and only after many attempts without success to solve
the issue is the patron's account turned over for collection.
The library will no longer offer proctoring of exams. This is very staff intensive and we cannot guarantee that the testing
requirements can be adhered to and we are not set up to offer the test on-line as many places require or prefer to eliminate
the possibility of cheating on the exam. We do have a list of locations at the Reference Desk of locations that offer
proctoring of exams.
The library will participate in a Pet Food Drive through Tarrant Area Food Bank starting February 7th and ending on
February 215`. The food bank has so many families asking for pet food they would like to assist if possible instead of
families being forced to give their pet up to a shelter. This does not waive fines for the patrons it is simply a donation to
help the food bank.
Downloadable books are coming soon!!! We are working with a test from Recorded Books and it seems very promising.
We have a list of MP3 players that are compatible and Ipods will be compatible with some titles at a later date. Patrons
will be required to sign up for an e-book account at the library before they can download to their MP3 player from the
home computer.
Kate Lyon and Betty Fuller attended a NTRLS meeting at the Colleyville Library. One of the exciting items that was
shown to the attendees was the Flip Video Camera. Kate would like to purchase one for the Youth Department. The cost
was between $110 refurbished to$159 through NTRLS.
•
- " Kate reported that the Dallas Morning News ran an article on the Dallas Public Library program "Street Smart." They
purchase multiple copies of top books and the public can pay$5.00 to check out before it is offered to the public. This is
not something we will consider for our library;Kate is of the opinion that the concept is in opposition to the general idea
of a public library.
Threadneedle Street is the next Masterworks program on Monday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room.
