MEMBERS STAFF OTHERS Mike McGehee Kate Lyon--absent Barney Snitz Karan Jasper Betty Fuller Tammi Trull LuAnn Portugal Marcia Brown Adriane Weinstein Chairman Mike McGehee called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the October 2,2008 minutes. LuAnn Portugal made the motion to accept the minutes, and Adriane Weinstein seconded the motion. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Statistics are really outstanding. The gate count and new library cards are up and we attribute some of the increase to the large number of people in the library with the early voting. Staff Update: We will begin the interviews for Senior Librarian in the Youth Department on November 13th and 146. We have some very good candidates and we are eager to get the position filled. Euless Library Foundation has planned a special book sale for December 6th and 7th in the Teen Room. They will have coffee table books, some rare books, and the popular"Peepers"will be available. The hours will be 10:00 am to 3:00pm on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Programming: The Youth Department will have a Fancy Nancy Tea Party on Thursday evening,November 13th in the Meeting Room. The Library and Artsnet will have"Holiday Cheer"performing in the library, in front of Blooms of Enlightment,on Monday December 86 at 7:00pm. Update on the coffee machine: The staff reported that only one person inquired about the coffee machine not being in service. Since it doesn't seem to impact the patrons we have decided to no longer offer the coffee service. The owner is scheduled to pick the equipment up in the next couple of weeks. December 7 through December 13 we will begin our"Food For Fees"program. Patrons will be able to take$1.00 off their fines for each can of food donated. This program is to reduce the late fines on their accounts only, and the food donations will be given to the Northeast Emergency Distribution organization. Early Voting was a huge success with 19,957 voting at the library from October 206 through October 31st. We have a new database: Footnotes.com is a genealogy and history database from the National Archives. You would have to go through the catalog to set up your own account and limited access from home is also available. We are offering new computer classes on updating resumes and finding coupons. On November 15 we will have 2009 calendars available to give out to the public. We did this last year and the calendars were very popular. Thanksgiving Holiday hours for the library: Closed Thursday,November 27 and Friday,November 28 and open for regular hours on Saturday and Sunday. Page 2 Libray Board Minutes November 6,2008 DISCUSSIONS:, 1. Mike McGehee welcomed Tammi Trull and thanked her for filling in for Kate Lyon. 2. Mike McGehee reports that the Friends Fall Book Sale made$1897.10. 3. Barney Snitz met a couple from Bedford and they told him they had been in the Euless Library recently and were so impressed with the staff and how friendly everyone treated them. 4. Barney also reported that on November 8,2008 the Historical Society will have photos on display at the Ruth Millican Center. 5. Barney was at the Police Station and Fire Stations open house. He was impressed with the booth that the police were teaching children how and when they need to call 911 for assistance. 6. Marcia Brown wanted the board to know how much the schools appreciated the new Trinity Read poster. She felt it was a great combination of efforts between the library and the Photo Journalism class. 7. LuAnn Portugal inquired about the new Genealogy/Local History room. She was happy to hear from Tammi that we have not had any problems or incidents in the room and felt it was a great use of space for additional study space. 8. LuAnn Portugal also wanted to let the board and the library know that she heard many people talking about the poster we have in the lobby. She felt the words were certainly appropriate during these economic times. 9. LuAnn Portugal also wanted to let the board know how very impressed and proud we should be for all of the long hours and hard work the staff put into making the early voting go so smoothly. We had a record number of people from all of Tarrant County coming into the library to vote, and without the organizational skills to keep the lines running smoothly and signs with information and directions the voting officials would not have been as easily available for questions and check-in for our citizens. 10. AND MOST IMPORTANT: To welcome new board members the board decided to have light snacks and refreshments at the December 4th Library Board Meeting. CITIZEN INPUT: None ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Marcia Brown and seconded by Betty Fuller. The meeting was adjourned at 7:58 p.m. Res ectfully Submitted Jasper 6 1/4,ut,„I I I I , . • /13-- cl k... . • Karan Recording Secretary Mike McGehee Euless Library Board Chairman
