HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-04-03 EULESS LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES April 3,2008 MEMBERS STAFF OTHERS Mike McGehee Kate Lyon Barney Snitz Karan Jasper Betty Fuller LuAnn Portugal Kacey Bess--absent Marcia Brown Adriane Weinstein DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES: The Chairman asked for a motion to be made to accept the February 7, 2008 minutes. Marcia Brown made the motion to accept the minutes,and Barney Snitz seconded the motion. Due to lack of quorum in March 2008 there are no minutes to approve for March. REPORT FROM THE LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR: Kate reports that April 14 through April 18 is National Library Week. The Library will be handing out Spot the Dog tote bags and bookmarks during the week. TLA is in Dallas the same week and all Library Staff will have an opportunity to attend at least one day. The Mayor will present a proclamation to Kate at the April 8th City Council Meeting to recognize National Library Week. A representative to Kenny Marchant's office will also be at the Council meeting to present the Library with a book in honor of National Library Week. Also at the meeting Kate will be presenting a power point presentation on library services that are available online. Karan and Tammi will hand out tote bags and bookmarks at the end of the presentation to the Council and City Administration. We will have the 3`d Annual Edible Book contest in the Library Board room starting April 9 with judging to begin at 3pm. The entries will be on display through Sunday,April 13. Brian Burns will be performing in the Meeting Room on Monday,April 14. Kate Lyon and Betty Fuller will attend the NTRLS Systems meeting on Thursday,April 24. Kate reports that the state library is receiving less money and this results in less money back to NTRLS. There has been some discussion this could result in cutbacks with personnel,programs,and the possibility of having to charge for workshops. The expansion is coming along. The Local History and Genealogy is well underway. The study rooms are almost complete. Carpet is scheduled to begin April 25th in the back office. The fabric for the upholstery has been selected and will be ordered soon. Arbor Daze is April 26 and April 27. The library will be closed for the weekend. Tile Project is going very well. So far 15 tiles have been sold. DISCUSSIONS: 1. At the February meeting Mike brought up looking to the future for the library. He would like to see who we serve and what do they value with the services we offer. How do we contribute to the community. He would also like to know what we need to do to be prepared 5 years down the road and the needs of the community at that time. 2. Marcia Brown reports that she is seeing a lot of the high school students coming into the library wanting books about fantasy,books in foreign languages,and books on tape/CD. Page 2 April 3,2008 Library Board Minutes 3. Kate Lyon reports to the board that she plans to add other language books. She has heard that the problems we were having with downloadable books are being addressed and we hope to have them available again to the patrons. Also,ESL classes are full and we continue to offer computer classes. We offer other language newspapers online. 4. Barney Snitz would like to see more multi-culture involvement in the library and on the Library Board. 5. Kate Lyon reports that ELF will be selling Peppers at Arbor Daze to hold your glasses, selling tiles,and promoting ELF membership. 6. Adriane Weinstein wanted to know if we could have more computers for the library. Kate reports that we have all that we can handle at this time. CITIZEN INPUT: None ADJOURNMENT: The Chairman asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by LuAnn Portugal and seconded by Betty Fuller.
