HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-01-29 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY BOARD January 29,2004 Item 1 —CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Animal Shelter Advisory Board was called to order by Chairman Leon Hogg at 11:03 a.m. at the City of Euless Animal Control Shelter, 1517 Wespark Way, Euless, Texas 76040. The following members were in attendance: Leon Hogg Gayla Maas, D.V.M. Clyde Cullum Staff Support: Chris Barker, Larry James, Cynthia Daniel Visitors: Conna Sanner Item 2 — REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES FROM MEETING OF OCTOBER 30, 2003 Leon Hogg asked if there were any questions regarding the minutes of October 30, 2003. Leon Hogg entertained the motion for approval of the Minutes of October 30, 2003. Dr. Maas made the motion and Clyde seconded the motion. Item 3—Update on Proposed Improvements for FY 03-04 Larry James gave an update on improvements to the shelter by Facility Maintenance. Doesn't have a start date for the improvements yet. The City of Bedford's shelter is willing to shelter animals for Euless, and we also have several cages available to house dogs outside. Dr. Maas asked to further discuss item from last meeting regarding litters of puppies and kittens that are brought to shelter by owners. She proposed that shelter see if it would be feasible if shelter could require person dropping off a whole litter at shelter to have the "queen" spayed or pay a fee for bringing in whole litter. Larry said the shelter charges $10 per animal and an additional $15 per animal that is not current on a rabies shot which puppies &kittens would not be for a total of$25. Larry said the cost for neutering a male dog is $104 and spaying starts at $100 and goes up per pound. Will see if it can be added in ordinance that shelter will require the "queen" to be spayed in order for the shelter to ASAB Minutes of January 29, 2004 take unwanted litter of puppies and kittens. Larry suggested that the shelter could waive the whole fee charged for the puppies/kittens if the owner would have the "queen" spayed since person adopting puppies/kittens would pay for rabies shots. This waiver of fee could also be added in ordinance. The shelter could take the "queen"to vet to be spayed and charge the owner the fee for spaying. Item 4—Activity Report for October—December, 2003 Larry James distributed activity report for viewing for the period October through December 2003. Clyde commented on Larry being employee of the month for January. Dr. Maas asked what types of citations were issued. Larry said they were for animals at large. The new spay/neuter ordinance has reduced the number of citations being issued for not having dogs/cats spayed or neutered after being adopted. Dr. Maas noted that the report shows more critters being adopted out than euthanized. Item 5—I.D. Chip and Scanner Demonstration Dr. Maas demonstrated how the chip and scanner work. Registration fee for implant chip is $10 for a breeder, $20 for a veterinarian to do it. The scanner cost is $200. Discussion on how it would be useful to shelter and ways to promote the use of it by pet owners. Item 6—Report on "All Paws Go To Heaven" Performance Clyde Cullum said that City is charged $5 per animal up to 100 pounds and $7 per animal over 100 pounds to cremate. All Paws comes to shelter twice per week to pick up animals. Item 7—Upcoming Events Dog Days is the 2"d Saturday in May. Will have a tent set up, refreshments, volunteer groomers and pet adoptions. Shelter has received three fold down crates that can be taken to off-site adoption sites and also donations of food. Trinity High School students are helping shelter animals get adopted by posting pictures of animals on the internet. ASAB Minutes of January 29, 2004 Item 8 — Board Members or Citizens Requests of Items of Interest to be Addressed by Staff and/or Placed on Future Agendas Conna Sanner noted that some of her previous requests for shelter animals have been completed. Clyde commented on the horse complaint that was discussed at the last council meeting. He gave Leon a copy of a letter regarding horses that was received by complainant Chris commented that at the last town hall meeting the shelter received two nice compliments. Item 9 -Adjourn Leon Hogg asked if there was other business to be considered by the Board. There being none, Leon entertained the motion to adjourn. Dr. Maas made the motion and Clyde seconded it.
