HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-01-24 • MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY BOARD JANUARY 24, 2008 ITEM 1 — CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Animal Shelter Advisory Board was called to order by Chairman Leon Hogg at 10:10 A.M. at the City of Euless Animal Control Shelter, 1517 Westpark Way, Euless, Texas 76040. The following members were in attendance: Leon Hogg Gayla Maas, D.V.M. Michelle Benton Clyde Cullum Staff Support: Ron Young, Larry James, J. T. Ackerman & Cynthia Daniel • ITEM 2 - REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES FROM MEETING OF OCTOBER 25, 2007 Chairman Hogg asked if there were any questions regarding the minutes of October 25, 2007. Dr. Maas made a motion to approve the Minutes of October 25, 2007. Clyde Cullum seconded the motion. Motion approved. ITEM 3 — STAFF REPORT (UPDATE ON DOG PARK) Ron Young reported that a construction contract was advertised and awarded, park will be located in Bear Creek Park on Bear Creek Parkway, had a preconstruction meeting with contractor, working out permit issues with Building Inspections, and should start construction in the next week or so. Public Works/Engineering will assist the Parks Department to complete construction. It will be one big enclosure with cross fence to separate large and small dogs areas with 2 separate entrances and wash areas with double gates. Original plan was to have two parks — one on the east side & one on the west side of Bear Creek Parkway. The owners of the apartment complex located on the east side of Bear Creek Parkway declined to give the city an easement or use of part of their property for park. City still plans to talk to apartment complex on west side of Bear Creek Parkway to use some of their property for expansion. ASAB Meeting Page 2 of 3 January 24, 2008 ITEM 4 — SHELTER STATISTICS REPORT Number of animals picked up held constant. Feral cats are being broken out on report. Euthanasias are mostly feral animals that can't be adopted. Animal bites are staying the same — may not be being reported. ITEM 5 — FY'09 BUDGET PROCESS Ron said that March 6th is the '08 Budget Kickoff and that the he will submit a request for a full-time kennel technician. Dr. Maas said that she noticed the the dog kennals have been cold lately and a heater may be needed. Some cage doors and gates are getting a little "ratty" and snagging clothes and may need replaced. Also that the vent is rusted and the back door where dogs are let out is rusting out needs and needs replaced. Ron and Clyde said these are maintenance issues and have been turned in. Ron requested that Larry James be given a list of capital items and maintenance items. Chairman Hogg asked Larry and Clyde about the request for new chasis to go on trucks that have lifts to hoist large animals in and out of cages. They are after market products. ITEM 6 — DOG DAZE PLAINNING May 10th is the date set for Dog Daze event. Ron asked Larry to have Betsy put notice in the Euless Today Magazine and the city's website to advertise event. Event will be at the new Public Works facility. ITEM 7 — BOARD MEMBERS OR CITIZENS REQUESTS OF ITEMS OF INTEREST TO BE ADDRESSED BY STAFF AND/OR PLACED ON FUTURE AGENDAS Ron distributed memo for proposed quarterly meetings for '08. Next meeting will be in April. Ron said there is a townhall meeting tonight. Discussed a letter received from resident of Morrisdale regarding disappearance of her cats and request to investigate poisoning of neighborhood cats. The City Manager or Mayor are preparing a letter to respond to her. Ron said that the re-roofing of the animal shelter and fire station buildings will probably start next week. ASAB Meeting Page 3of3 January 24, 2008 Dr. Maas asked the status of dog registration ordinance. Ron will check with Deputy City Manager and report back at next meeting. Ron reported on Merced lawsuit. The city won the federal part of the lawsuit but there is a portion still pending. ITEM 8 - ADJOURN The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 A.M.
