She extended a welcome to the members and visitors. . MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Al Browning, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Gary Fieldsend, Mary Hunt, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Anniece McKanna, Suzy McCormick, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Andy Weinzapfel, and Mavy Wright. STAFF PRESENT Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. VISITORS PRESENT Mayor Linda Martin APPROVAL OF MINUTES Barbara Collier advised of an error regarding the name of this organization noted in the Committee Report/Input section of the May 13, 2019 minutes; it should be “Committee”, not “Commission”. Andy Weinzapfel wished to elaborate on #9 Artifact Recovery stating the Euless pond where a landowner said the Pony Express ran may not have been accurate. The actual Pony Express line ran between St. Joseph, MO and Sacramento, CA for a period of 18 months from 1860-61. There were several “copycat” mail express lines, one of which could have existed in our area. He further commented that a local landowner might donate a covered wagon to the museum. Weldon Cannon indicated a correction to the sixth sentence under #3 to read “Weldon Cannon donated a file collection on ‘Euless and Aviation’ and not on the Amon Carter field. He mentioned he once intended applying for a historical marker, but he never will. Mr. Cannon also stated he met with Brenda McClurkin, head of UTA Special Collections, about setting up a tour with our Historical Preservation Committee at a future monthly meeting. Don Martin made a motion to accept the May minutes with corrections, Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. After unanimous approval, Chairman McCormick stated the motion carried. TREASURER’S REPORT The May Treasurer’s balance was $11,313.31. There was a deposit of $27.00 from the money jar which resulted in an ending balance on June 10, 2019 of $11,340.31. HPC MTG 061019 Page 2 of 3 STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docents and Volunteer Report/Recruitment—Mavy Wright distributed a docent signup sheet for July, August and September. Typically, only three docents are needed per location, except during a special event. There were 26 visitors to the museum at the June Open House. She noted a group of Cub Scouts visited the museum and were excited to see the display of Boy Scout memorabilia; they plan to visit monthly. Ms. Wright also stated a group of nine adults toured from Greenville, Texas. A reminder email will be sent to the committee members prior to the Open House. It is very important to work the shift that one volunteers for on the signup sheet. 2. Acquisition—no report. 3. Facebook— posts are still being made to solicit visitors to the museum. 4. Plaque—Faye Stinneford is updating the plaque to show term date of the current / previous committee President / Vice-presidents. 5. Display Signs—nothing to report from Mavy Wright. 6. Publicity/Program/Speakers—Mavy Wright mentioned sending a thank-you note to Police Chief Michael Brown for the committee’s tour of the Police station. Mrs. Wright confirmed Bill Morris will be the September guest speaker. Mr. Morris is a historian from the 1953-74 era of Amon Carter Field. She will purchase a restaurant gift card for the speaker, as approved at the previous committee meeting. 7. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long indicated the committee will be taking a break until after the 4th of July. Work on the scrapbooks are progressing well. She will continue to seek input when it comes to identifying photos. 8. Heritage Park—nothing to report from Gary Parker. 9. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel clarified that the Euless pond previously discussed was not a part of the Pony Express. He has it on good authority via a seminar he attended that the Pony Express only ran between St Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, CA for about 18 months in 1860-61. It did not come through this area. However, there were several “copycat” mail express lines. One could have existed in this area but the same landowner who reported this story is the same one who offered to donate the covered wagon to the museum’s collection. Mr. Weinzapfel indicated Gary Parker may be looking at the wagon to see if it should be acquired for the museum inventory. 10. Historical Tree Program—nothing to report from Any Weinzapfel. 11. Inventory—Barbara Collier asked for two to three volunteers to help her with tracking and locating items due to her failing eyesight. She suggested meeting at the museum on Wednesday mornings. Anyone interested should contact her. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Chairperson McCormick reminded everyone there will be no Committee meetings in July or August. She suggested the Committee take a tour of the Tarrant County Courthouse 1895 Room in the fall or spring. The committee was agreeable, Ms. McCormick will make arrangements. Ms. McCormick HPC MTG 061019 Page 3 of 3 and Ms. Wright plan to attend the Grapevine Historical Commission meeting at 7pm on June 24 at the Grapevine Public Library. The speaker will be local television celebrity and author, Bobbie Wygant. STAFF REPORT Ray McDonald stated he would pursue the secure placement of Mr. Cannon’s historical summaries. COMMITTEE REPORT/INPUT Mary Hunt asked about docent packets. Staff indicated that packets are kept in the Museum office and Fuller House and will be replaced if not located. Mrs. also inquired as to the availability of contact information for the members. Weldon Cannon noted that the Board and Commission handbook includes contact information for all the members. Staff will email the Board and Commission handbook to the members and post a list inside the Museum and in the Fuller House. Ms. Wright requested the use of $25 to purchase bottled water for docents at the museum. Barbara Collier advised she has $9 in a petty cash fund that could be used. Motion to use Committee funds to purchase water was made by Al Browning, seconded by Mary Hunt, and unanimously approved. Joe Cannon advised of the recent passing of Bill Gay, and that there were many interesting stories told at the memorial service. Weldon Cannon mentioned Mr. Gay had been a staff member at the Euless school when students from the Black community first enrolled. Mr. Cannon expressed the importance of the permanent storage of the “Weldon Cannon – Euless” collection and other archival documents at University of Texas at Arlington. He further stated he was providing the City of Euless with summary papers to place on their website so citizens could be directed to the complete collection at UTA; this would be beneficial to citizens and genealogists. Another suggestion was made to display the summary documents at the museum. Mr. McDonald will pursue the placement. Barbara Collier found $9 in some of Robert Nail’s old records as Treasurer of the Historical committee. She will bring it to the next meeting. ADJOURNMENT Barbara Collier made a motion to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Gary Fieldsend. After unanimous approval, Chairperson Suzy McCormick adjourned the meeting at 11:13a.m. Respectfully submitted by: Anniece McKanna, Committee Secretary
