HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-09-09HPC MTG 090919 Page 1 of 3 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 9, 2019 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Suzy McCormick called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. at the Euless City Hall, Euless. She extended a welcome to the members and visitors. . MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Al Browning, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Gary Fieldsend, Mary Hunt, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Anniece McKanna, Suzy McCormick, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Andy Weinzapfel, and James Fuller. STAFF PRESENT Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. VISITORS PRESENT Mayor Linda Martin, Bill Morris, and Don Pyeatt. GUEST SPEAKER Ms. McCormick introduced the speaker, Bill Morris, who provided an informative presentation entitled “The Tale of Two Cities & A Field of Dreams” about the history and purposes of various airfields and the rivalry between Dallas and Fort Worth leading up to the creation of DFW International Airport. At the end of the presentation, Ms. McCormick offered Mr. Morris a token of appreciation and thanked him and his colleague, Don Pyeatt. An invitation to the Fort Worth Aviation Museum was extended to the members. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Prior to approval of the minutes, Weldon Cannon asked for a correction in the paragraph regarding the passing of Bill Gay on page 3. He asked to modify the sentence to read, “Weldon Cannon mentioned Mr. Gay had been a staff member at the Euless school when students from the Black community first ‘attempted to enroll’”. Norma Lively made a motion to accept the minutes with the correction, Don Martin seconded the motion. After unanimous approval, Chairman McCormick stated the motion carried. TREASURER’S REPORT Due to the absence of Treasurer Mavy Wright, there was no report. HPC MTG 090919 Page 2 of 3 STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docents and Volunteer Report/Recruitment—Linda Pool distributed a signup sheet for October Open House. She mentioned a reminder email will be sent to the committee members prior to the event. 2. She also advised the committee about a small airfield north of Fort Worth, Hicks Airfield. She recommended everyone visit the unique airfield and enjoy a meal at the Beacon restaurant. 3. Acquisition—no report. 4. Facebook— posts are still being made to solicit visitors to the museum. A thank-you was extended to Assistant to the City Manager Betsy Deck and her staff for posting the pictures and videos. A photo is posted each month on which the citizens can comment and identify the object. 5. Plaque—Faye Stinneford stated the plaque has been updated. 6. Display Signs—no report. 7. Publicity/Program/Speakers—no report. 8. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long indicated work on the scrapbooks is progressing well. She will continue to seek input to identify photos. 9. Heritage Park—no report. 10. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel mentioned he will begin metal detecting soon with his new metal detector. He is continuing to seek approval to search on select property. 11. Historical Tree Program—no report. 12. Inventory—Barbara Collier has a new volunteer that will be helping her with the inventory. Anyone interested should contact her and meet at the museum on Wednesday mornings. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Chairperson McCormick thanked the guest speakers and the attendees. STAFF REPORT No report. COMMITTEE REPORT/INPUT Norma Lively advised the Player Piano and Victrola in the Fuller House are not working. Helen Payton mentioned she had the contact information for the man who last serviced them. She will provide Ray McDonald with the phone number so he can reach out for service. Al Browning expressed appreciation to those who cleaned the kitchen and storage in the Museum. Faye Stinneford advised the members of the upcoming ECPAAA BBQ dinner and raffle which will be held at the Senior Center on Midway Drive on September 28. Tickets are $15 each and are available from Faye and other ECPAAA members. HPC MTG 090919 Page 3 of 3 Gary Fieldsend mentioned he had been scanning photos to the website and would gladly scan any additional photos as they become available to him. Weldon Cannon brought five additional archival items to be given to Ray McDonald for public access. The originals are placed at the UTA Library Special Collection. Al Browning requested a project list for discussion and update at the next monthly meeting. ADJOURNMENT Al Browning made a motion to adjourn the meeting and was seconded by Andy Weinzapfel.
