Dear Citizens,
This spring,
the U.S.
will be
conducting
its 2020
Census. You
will receive
your census form in the mail.
The exciting news is that instead
of having to speak to a census
taker in person, you will have
the option of completing the
quick questionnaire online, by
phone or by mail.
It’s important that everyone
be counted. With just a one
percent undercount in Texas,
our healthcare, schools and
transportation services may lose
funds, which may impact your
quality of life. So, next March,
please be on the lookout for
your 2020 Census form and
be sure to submit it before the
deadline.
Although I have just touched on
the highlights here, you can find
more information regarding the
2020 Census at www.census.gov.

Do I Need a Permit?
Fall is in full display, and this season sparks the time to start new home
improvement projects. As you begin planning that new swimming pool or
any remodel projects, we wanted to provide information that will help clarify
the permitting process as well as any permits fees that may be required.
Building permits are issued through your Planning and Development
Department.

Do I Need a Permit? Continued from page 1.
We appreciate your decision to continue making
an investment in your property. Through our
permitting, plan review and inspection process,
we want to make sure you get as much value
out of those home improvement projects
as possible. We will make sure the work is
performed safely and meets all applicable
codes.
The City of Euless has recently changed its
building permit fee calculations. Signed by
Gov. Greg Abbott, a new bill no longer allows
cities to determine residential building permit
fees based on the valuation of the project’s cost.
Instead, permit fees are calculated based on
either the square footage of the areas that are
being renovated or simply a flat fee.
Although how fees are calculated has changed,
the types of permits that are required remain
the same. We want to remind you about
the various types of projects that require a
permit. This would include projects such as
garage conversions, room additions, driveway
approaches, new swimming pools, fences
and water heaters. No permit is required for
window and door replacements or cosmetic
changes including cabinet and tile installation
or fence repair.
Please remember that if you contact a
professional contractor about your home
improvement projects, ask for names of
previous customers that you can contact and
discuss their experience.
Before beginning a home improvement project
that requires a permit, please contact our
Planning and Development Office at
817-685-1630 or email permits@eulesstx.gov
so that we can ensure the proper permits have
been handled correctly.
Our website www.eulesstx.gov/planning also
has information on permits and fees. We look
forward to working with you on your next
home improvement project.

Fire Prevention Week
October 6-12
Not every hero wears a cape
Plan and Practice your EscapeTM
The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)
wants you to know how small actions can help
keep you and those around you safe. In 2017, fire
departments in the U.S. have responded to 357,000
home structure fires. These fires have caused 2,630
fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries.
“These numbers show that home fires continue to
pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine
Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and
Advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as
little as one to two minutes to escape safely from
the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning
and practice can help you make the most of the
time you have, giving everyone enough time to get
out.”
Develop and practice your home fire escape plan
before a fire strikes:
• Plan your escape route.
• Test your smoke detectors. Alarms should
be in every sleeping room, outside each
separate sleeping area and on every level of
the home.
• Choose an outside meeting place.
• Practice home fire drills, so that family
members (especially children) know how to
escape on their own.
Although fires can occur anywhere, four out
of five U.S. fire deaths occur at home each
year. Share this information with your loved
ones, so they will know what to do in the
event of a fire. For more information, visit
www.FirePreventionWeek.org
National Night Out
Tuesday, October 1, 7 p.m.
Turn on your outside lights, lock your
doors and spend the evening outside with
38 million people in more than 16,000
communities. Each year on National Night
Out, Euless residents proactively deter
crime by organizing a variety of special
events within their neighborhoods. Get
your neighborhood involved in National
Night Out to promote police/community
partnerships, and learn about violence
and drug prevention while building
neighborhood unity. Send a message
to criminals letting them know your
neighborhood is organized, involved and
fighting back.
The Euless Police and Fire Departments
invite all neighborhoods in Euless to meet
in their neighborhood parks and join with
the police and the nation to “take a bite
out of crime.” You can request a visit by
representatives of the Fire Department at
817-685-1600 or the Police Department at
817-685-1536.
