HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-10-03 Euless Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 3 , 1994 Members Present: Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Diana Crawford, Mazie Eden, Betty Fuller, Evelyn Himes, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Jean Whitener, and Nina Winters. Staff Present: Rick Herold and Julia Wakeley. Guests Present: Lawrence Jernigan and Greg Walton Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m. I. OLD BUSINESS A. Fuller House: Priority needs for the restoration of the Fuller house were rank ordered. 1. Roof 2. "Mud" seals 3 . Porch 4. Wheel chair ramp (in rear) Betty Fuller made the motion to appoint a work committee composed of one (1) Historical Committee member (Bill Byers) , one (1) city staff member (Rick Herold) and one (1) City Council member (to be appointed by the Mayor) . The committee would establish priorities and coordinate __ plans for restoration of the Fuller house located adjacent to the Ruth Millican Center. Iva Nails seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Evelyn Himes made a motion that Iva Nail be appointed chairperson of a committee to coordinate the donation and selection of furnishings and oversee the authentic restoration of the interior of the Fuller House. Helen Payton seconded the motion. The motion passed. It was recommended that the second floor be used as a museum. Diana Crawford requested that Nina Winters research the following information regarding the Fuller house for the November meeting: • Meeting capacity as determined by the Fire Marshall Page two Additional topics relevant to uses for the Fuller Home were discussed: • Suggested uses (i .e. club meetings, weddings, receptions, etc. ) • Rental fee scale • Amount of deposit required. Iva Nail informed the committee that Norma Lively had painted a water color of the Fuller House. The committee might use reproductions as notes, "thank You's" for contributions, etc. Diana Crawford announced that an electrician had volunteered to rewire the Fuller House at no charge. Robert Nail made a motion that "Thank You Plaques" for assistance for funds, labor and support for moving the Fuller House be purchased (not to exceed $150.00) and be presented to Taco Bell, The City of Euless and City Parks and Leisure Departments. Nina Winters seconded the motion. The motion passed. Julia Wakeley will coordinate this project. B. Dock McGinnis Drive Diana Crawford announced that the name change request for Westhaven Drive to be changed to Dock McGinnis Drive was sent to the City Council and approved on October 11. Lawrence Jernigan donated a photo of Dock McGinnis to the Committee's archives file. Publicity for the name change ceremony will be sent to the media. Mr. Jernigan and Chairperson Crawford will be present at the ceremony. Alb II. New Business A. Archi Texas Chairperson Crawford reported on her meeting with Craig Melody, representative of the Archi-Texas, Urban Planning Firm specializing in historic preservation projects. Chairperson Crawford and Jean Whitener guided the group on a tour of Euless' historical sites including: • Himes house • McCormick Barn • Bill-Edna Deacon Property (1919) • Harrington Farm (1900) including windmill , barn and out buildings Page three Diana reported that the representatives were excited about possibilities for the Harrington Farm. She shared information regarding Bedford's restoration projects and how they obtained bids from preservation architects. Our committee can use the information when determining a plan to preserve historical sites in Euless. Diana Crawford will research fund raising activities for the committee so that funds can be generated for preservation projects. Sources of grants and information regarding the establishment of a 501 classification for the preservation funds will be pursued. The committee discussed establishing a memorial fund as one source of funding for future projects/preservation architect fees etc. Named memorials could be given for family members and/or friends. Robert Nail recommended that the committee develop an informational brochure highlighting the historical committee's function, goals, and projects. The brochure would contain detailed information regarding contributions, "how and where they could be made" etc. B. Euless Christmas Village Jean Whitmer, Weldon Cannon, Evelyn Mimes and Mazie Eden will meet with Rick Herold to design three (3) building facades. III . Miscellaneous Business A. Diana Crawford will share information regarding the history of Euless with Midway Park third grade students. B. Nina Winters shared a 1990 newspaper article requesting information for a history book. the committee decided that there had been no follow-up regarding the request. C. Calloway Cemetery - Bill Byers reported that a boy scout had completed planting the 504 graves at the cemetery. Diana Crawford will send an official "thank-you" letter commending the scout for his project. The meeting adjourned at 12:00 P.M.
