HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-06-12 EULESS HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MINUTES JUNE 12, 1995 The June 12 , 1995 meeting of the Euless Historical Preservation Committee was called to order at 10:00 A.M. with Chairperson Diana Crawford presiding. Members present: Weldon Cannon, Diana Crawford, Geri Donworth, Mazie Eden, Betty Fuller, Iva Nail, Robert Nail and Nina Winters Staff Present: Director of Community Services Rick Herold and Parks and Leisure Services Manager Julia Wakeley. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the May 8, 1995 meeting were approved. I. Old Business A. Fuller House 1. Rick Herold reported on the status of bids and the renovation project for the Fuller House. Kevin Boaz will supervise the project. Ray McDonald will assist Johnnie Green by coordinating project paperwork and Kevin Mercer will coordinate code enforcement requirements. Iva and Robert Nail have volunteered to serve on a committee with Helen Payton to solicit donations and coordinate refurbishing and furnishing the interior of the house. 2. Diana Crawford reported that the volunteers from T.U. Electric Community Day "Our Day to Shine" Project had completed insulating the exterior of the house. 3. The Historical Preservation Committee will request that the city council issue a proclamation to thank T.U. Electric and Taco Bell for their efforts to preserve the Fuller House. The proclamation will be presented in July, if possible. B. Member reports 1. Nina Winters will finalize the project of burying the time capsule near the Iron Bridge Marker. 2. Weldon Cannon reported on the progress of the Adam Euless Historical Marker application. Plans are that the ceremony for the installation will coincide with the ceremony for the opening of the new library. Betty Fuller will meet with Betty Yarbrough to discuss the following: * The coordination of the marker dedication ceremony with the opening of the library (probable date August 1996) * A possible recommendation for a site for the Adam Euless marker * Space for Historical Preservation Committee files and oral histories at the new library Historical Preservation Committee 061295 Regular Meeting pg 2 * Site for a bench or table 3. Diana Crawford checked on the status of the transcription of the oral histories recorded by Betty Fuller. Nina Winters volunteered to assist in transcribing the cassettes. 4. The committee discussed the sale of the notecards printed to generate funds for future projects. The committee will request that the cards be sold at the water department city office and at the new library. The "Library Foundation" will purchase some cards to use to solicit donations for artwork, etc. for the new library. 5. Diana Crawford sent a letter to the Street Naming Committee requesting that a street in the proposed 360 shopping mall be named Audie Murphy Drive. 6. Geri Donworth will continue to pursue sources for grants for the Preservation Committee. 7. Diana distributed names and addresses of the people who signed the Arbor Daze list of people interested in Euless Preservation Committee goals. Members were asked to contact the 4 or 5 people on their lists to ask if those interested wished to participate in any of our projects and thank them for attending the celebration. C. 1995-96 Goals and Projects 1. Installation of Adam Euless Historical marker 2. Completion of Fuller House renovation including interior design person to work with Iva Nail 3. 1996 Arbor Daze booths 4. Historical site survey/Long Range Plan 5. Motions a. Nina Winters made and Robert Nail seconded the motion to request that the Euless City Council allocate $5000.00 in the 1996 budget to fund a historical survey/long range historical development plan for the city and Historical Committee. The motion passed unanimously. b. The motion by Weldon Cannon seconded by Nina Winters to ask the City Council to carry over the 1995 allocation of $3000. 00 to the 1996 budget passed unanimously. c. The motion by Geri Donworth seconded by Nina Winters to request that the City Council allocate $25,000.00 in the 1996 budget to complete the interior of the Fuller House also passed unanimously. II. New Business George N. Green's book Hurst. Euless, and Bedford. Heart of the Metroplex, and Illustrated History has been completed. Historical Preservation Committee 061295 Regular Meeting pg 3 The publisher, Eakin Press of Austin, Texas, requested that the Euless Historical Preservation Committee contribute a paragraph to be printed on the cover flysheet of the book. III.New Business A. Committee members recommended that a small area/wall space in the Fuller House be reserved for a tribute to those who served in any branch of the U.S. Military. B. Summer Projects * July 10 meeting * July 11 recognition for T.U. Electric and Taco Bell Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 12 noon.
