Minutes
August 12, 1996
The August 12, 1996 meeting of the Euless Historical Preservation Committee was
called to order at 10:10 a.m. by Chairperson Diana Crawford.
Members Present:
Diana Crawford, Bill Byers, Mazie Eden, Evelyn Himes, Jean Whitener, Nina Winters,
Weldon Cannon, Vada Johnson, Willie Mae McCormick, and Troy Fuller.
Staff Members Present:
Julia Wakeley, Parks and Leisure Services Manager, Ray McDonald, Projects
Supervisor, Leon Hogg, Council member.
Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the June 10,1996 meeting were approved as submitted. There were no
minutes from the canceled July 0. 1996 meeting.
i. Old Business:
A. Fuller House Update
Bill Byers and Ray McDonald reported on completed outside work. All that
remains is the ceiling on the front porch. Due to the additional footage requested
for the yard, the fence may need to be rebid. Councilman Hogg recommended that
the committee present fence design and relocation of the jogging track for
approval at the next park board meeting. Diana Crawford will call to be placed on
the agenda. Bill Byers is checking on underground electrical service. Both he and
Diana Crawford will contact Story regarding completion of inside wiring.
B. Historical Marker
Text was approved by all parties and sent to Austin for final approval.
C. Member Reports
Photo Collection - Jean Whitener reported on Fort Worth Star Telegram section
entitled "Then and Now" noting pictures and text were not quite historically
correct. She also reported that the work David Allen is doing on reproducing our
collected photos is coming along very well. David may also have some information
on available grants for historical preservation.
411. New Business
A. Membership strategy
Many ideas were suggested to build a volunteer group including Weldon Cannon's
suggestion of a brochure with a coupon to send in for interested volunteers. Other
ideas submitted were water bill inserts, a historical society. better public
relations and notices to newspapers, updating the committee goals and preparing
information for the Euless cable channel. Nina Winters suggested feeding the
newspaper with historical stories, i.e. where Euless got some of the street names.
B. Morris Estate
Troy Fuller reported that all bids had been rejected by TCU and he would follow
up with inquiring on the present status. All committee members who toured the
place indicated their interest in obtaining the property for Euless and concern that
Euless could lose the property to an outside entity.
C. Meeting Times
Leon Hogg suggested that consideration be given to changing. meetings to
evenings to increase attendance.
D. Recognition of Special Citizens
Diana Crawford expressed her concern that we are not recognizing citizens who
have contributed to the history of Euless and asked everyone think of ways we
could honor citizens such as Jennie Payton, Ruth Millican, Warren Fuller, Mrs.
McCormick and others ones feel needing recognition. Bill Byers indicated Boyce
Byers' also is considering this issue.
