HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-12-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 9, 2019 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Suzy McCormick called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. at the Texas Star Conference Centre in Euless. She extended a welcome to the members and visitors. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown,Al Browning, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon,Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Gary Fieldsend, James Fuller, Mary Hunt, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Suzy McCormick,Anniece McKanna, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss,Andy Weinzapfel, and Mavy Wright. STAFF PRESENT Parks and Community Services Director Ray McDonald, Recreation Assistant Ofa Faiva-Siale and Library Administer Sherry Knight. VISITORS PRESENT Patty Benoit, Mike Pool, Councilpersons Perry Bynum and Harry Zimmer. GUEST SPEAKER Sherry Knight updated the members on the progress of the Library remodel. The interior has been redesigned and upgrades will be made to the AV equipment, self-checkout, and phone app. There will still be area for HPC rotating exhibits. She also suggested having an interactive scavenger hunt with prizes for visitors to Museum. Mavy Wright toured the new Library and was very impressed. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The following corrections were made to the November minutes: 1. Under Committee Report/ Input; Suzy McCormick noted that it should read "the Tarrant County Historical Commission rather than the "Tarrant County Historical Organization". 2. Under Status of Current Projects; Andy Weinzapfel made a correction to item #9. Regarding the Mosier Valley property that was a wedding present, it should read, "He stated he had been doing further research on the property which was a wedding present from Lucy Lee to the Johnsons who were slaves, living somewhere on the original 40 acres." He passed around an aerial photo showing a possible old cabin foundation at the southern part of the 50-acre Mosier Valley Park area which should be ground checked. 3. Under Status of Current Projects, item #11, Barbara Collier indicated she had not done a video interview of David Massey. Only O.D. Lively and Billy Byers have been interviewed. HPC MTG 120919 Page 1 of 3 Linda Pool made a motion to accept the minutes with the corrections. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion. After unanimous approval, the motion carried. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer Mavy Wright reported that the November balance was $11,418.31. There were deposits of$22 from the money jar and $175 in memorial of Betty Fuller. There was an expense of$116.80 resulting in a current balance of$11,498.51. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docents and Volunteer Report/Recruitment—Linda Pool distributed a signup sheet for the December and January Open Houses. There were 25 visitors at the November Open House. The December Heritage Park Christmas event will be on December 14 and recommended as many docents as possible to work the different locations. Mavy Wright suggested making announcements to the visitors during the event to visit the individual buildings. Members asked for reserved parking areas for the committee. Ray McDonald indicated parking for the docents will be available. 2. Acquisition—No report. 3. Facebook—Linda Pool stated there was a great response to the Facebook post provided by Andy Weinzapfel about Mosier Valley resulting in good leads and sharing to other Facebook groups. 4. Plaque—Faye Stinneford stated the Betty Fuller memorial plaque had been purchased with Committee funds. It will be displayed on the wall by the Post Office at the Museum. 5. Display Signs—Mavy Wright stated this is an ongoing project and is working with staff. 6. Publicity/Program/Speakers—Mavy Wright is in the process of arranging speakers for 2020. 7. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long indicated the committee will reconvene in January 2020. She stated Linda Pool completed an album to display at the Fuller House. 8. Heritage Park—Gary Parker is getting estimates from a man to build the display cabinets. Helen Voss will also have a quote from a cabinet maker for the committee to review. 9. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel obtained permission from Deacon Benny Tucker to display three artifacts he discovered and will be able to detect on the Mosier Valley Cemetery property. Mr.Weinzapfel shared an item with the members in hopes someone could identify it. He made contact with the City of Fort Worth for permission to metal detect on Mosier Valley key areas, however, Fort Worth has not been easy to work with due to certain stipulations, etc. HPC MTG 120919 Page 2 of 3 a. Found an axe on a tract of land west of the Golf Course, property owned by the City of Euless. 10. Historical Tree Program—no report. 11. Inventory—Barbara Collier mentioned the committee had not been able to meet due to conflicts, but will begin meeting in January 2020. Staff will be available to help with entering data into PastPerfect. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Chairperson Suzy McCormick will have the committee "project list" for review in January, 2020. STAFF REPORT No report. COMMITTEE REPORT/INPUT 1. Barbara Collier presented a video and documentation to Billy Byers from his DAR WWII interview. 2. Linda Pool found a repairman for the Victrola. He may possibly do repairs in January. 3. Weldon Cannon reported the following: a. Expressed appreciation to Andy Weinzapfel and the City for their dedication to honor the history of Euless and the surrounding area. b. Discussed the great contribution made by the late Vada Johnson, first African American teacher in the HEB-ISD and great friend of the late Betty Fuller. Ms. Johnson provided much of the information the committee has on Mosier Valley when she served on the Euless Historical Committee. Mr. Cannon expressed great interest in honoring Ms. Johnson in some possible way for her contributions to Euless history. 4. Don Martin reported that the Mayor is recovering well from her recent surgery and thanked everyone for their prayers. 5. Michele Burger mentioned the recent passing of her husband, Dan Burger. A memorial will take place in January. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting and was seconded by Mary Hunt.
