HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-10-08 D1STRIB fir; "-Si T. ii Sol , _ ) Euless Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 8, 2001 Call to Order Chairman Bill Byers called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m. Members Present Evelyn Himes, Jean Whitener, Weldon Cannon, Don Tharp, Betty Fuller, Bill Byers, Michele Burger, Robert Nail, Iva Nail and Helen Lightbody Staff Present Glenda Hartsell, Special Events Coordinator Visitors Present Alex Horton, Euless Library Foundation Old Business 1. Weldon Cannon reported that he finished his text on the Himes Log House for the brochure and it was forwarded to Rick Herold, Director of Parks and Community Services. 2. Betty Fuller read a letter from Troy Fuller who will be out of town during October and most of November. Troy Fuller, Evelyn Himes, Leon Hogg, June Greshem, Vada Fuller Boswell and Betty Fuller spent many hours on preparing the necessary data of all items in the homes and have taken photos of all rooms except the den. This has been a tremendous task. Glenda Hartsell will take photo of the museum items in the den by December. New Business 2. Chairman Bill Byers introduced our guest, Alex Horton from the Euless Library Board. Alex handed out a copy of a letter that proposed objectives and considerations for utilizing the library for display and having ongoing presentations to the public. Discussion took place about use of the displays, display designs, construction and size of displays reflecting the history of Euless. Discussion included the possibility of having a video on the history of Euless. Space at the library is available, both for storing displays including a mobile display. A motion was made by Iva Nail, seconded by Betty Fuller, to work with the library to promote the historical preservation of the City of Euless. 3. Bill Byers reported that he and Michele Burger would meet with the Scout Master Tuesday, October 9 and that troops will visit the Fuller House and Himes Log House on Saturday. 4. Robert Nail and Michele Burger suggested that Troy Fuller should be considered for EHPC 100801 Mtg. Page 1 "Volunteer of the Month". The request will be forwarded to Jerry Poteet, Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Euless. 5. Bill Byers reported that some vandalism had taken place in the Fuller House. Entry was made through the kitchen window. No items were missing. Himes House also had a broken window. 6. A suggestion was made to send Rick a"Thank you"note for installing the fence at the Himes Log House. 7. Iva Nail reported that the all children of the HEBISD third grade will visit the Bedford Schoolhouse, the Fuller House and the Himes Log House in February 2002. This is a result of Betty Fuller's effort to program with the HEB schools to include these tours in their curriculum. 8. Bill Byers asked Michele Burger to send letters to Kay Granger and Todd Smith for flags for the historic houses. Keith Brown, who is a member of the VFW, would do the dedication of the flags. A Warren Fuller American Flag is already in the window of the Fuller House, in the bedroom that faces Cullum Street. 9. Michele Burger had a banner made 20 June 2001 for the Dallas 2012 Olympic Spirit Pride visit to Texas Star Complex and it will be used for the Julia Wakeley Golf Tournament October 15 at the Texas Star. October 24, 2001 will be the first cut on the Olympic 2012. Chuck's Windmill Farm is donating a windmill at the Texas Star Golf Course and Conference Center. The motion was made by Robert Nail and seconded by Weldon Cannon that we pay$200 for a wooden frame for the windmill. 10. A motion was made by Michele Burger that we get Crosscreek blue denim shirts, priced at $25. Motion was seconded by Betty Fuller, motion passed. 11. Docents for November will be Dan and Michele Burger. Docents for December will be Betty Fuller and Iva Nail. 12. Michele mentioned the improvements at Fuller House and the Himes log House: fence outside, inside fence painted black, patio lights replaced. 13. Heidi Hulin, Euless Parks and Community Services Program Coordinator, programmed a three week Indian Cuisine Cooking Class at the Fuller House and Ruth Millican kitchens on September 11, 18 and 25. But the gas was shut off due to construction. 14. Michele Burger has rented the Fuller House Saturday, October 6 for a wedding shower/dinner. There will be 18 in attendance. 15. Michele Burger reported that on Friday, October 12 at 9 a.m., in Grandbury, the Texas Historical Commission will give a free workshop. She encouraged members to attend. The open house of six city facilities for Saturday, October 27 has been canceled until January 2002. Glenda Hartsell has reported due to the completion of the Police and Court Facility, she plans to change the time Heritage Park Christmas activity to start at 4 p.m. 17. Michele Burger suggested we make a Christmas card photo in front of the Himes House/Fuller House and send to people who donated items to the museum. Hopefully wearing the new EHPC shirts. 18. Robert Nail said he wished the Fuller House/Himes Log House be open more than just once a month. He suggested we look into hiring a part-time manager, like the City of White Settlement Historical Museum, Danny Sadler. Glenda Hartsell said that with economic uncertainty we are facing, all new hires are on hold. Michele Burger said she and Dan Burger would be docents, the second Sunday of each month 1-5 p.m. Glenda will submit to Euless Today, the City Manager's winter edition, to make that announcement to the public. 19. Michele Burger sent a letter to members to attend the Wild West Fest in the Keller Bear Creek Park on Friday, September 28. This is the educational day for the KISD School District. Many of the demonstrators will be attending the Heritage Park Christmas Activities on December 8. Jerry Poteet, Michele Burger, Robert and Iva Nail attended. Jerry video taped the demonstrations. Robert and Iva Nail said it was very educational and enjoyed it. Video was reviewed by some committee members.
