MEETING
March 11 , 2002
CALL TO ORDER: ,Chairman Bill Byers called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Byers, Helen Payton, Evelyn Himes, Jean Whitener,
Weldon Cannon, Michelle Burger, Don Tharp, Ralph Williamson,
Helen Lightbody
STAFF PRESENT: Glenda Hartsell, Special Events Coordinator
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion was made by Don Tharp and seconded by Jean Whitener to approve the
minutes of the February 20, 2002 meeting. Motion passed.
OLD BUSINESS:
TOUR OF HOMES BY THIRD GRADERS
It was estimated that approximately 105 students, teachers and helpers
toured the two homes on March 26, 2002. Approximately 77 toured the homes
on March 5, 2002. Brochures were provided for the teachers prior to the
tours.
It was suggested that we send "Thank You" notes to the Vendors who participated.
The City will also provide a letter of thanks to. the Vendors.
Iva Nail, Boyce Byers, Jean Whitener and Helen Payton helped with the program.
Michelle Burger thanked everyone who participated in the program. It was
well received. They had baby chickens, roping, a tea party, quilting,
sausage making, butter churning, lunch bucket etc.
Bill Byers said that the quilt makers are working on a quilt that would be
more appropriate for the timeframe of the Himes Log House. The current
quilt which is on display at the Himes Log House was initually intended for
Texas Star and will be returned there after the new quilt is finished.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES FOR "VISIONARIES IN PRESERVATION PROGRAM "
No report was given. Michelle Burger suggested that Glenda Hartsell
remind Rick Herold of this program. Next application deadline is May, 2002
NEW BUSINESS
Bill Byers said he had replaced the flags at the Homes. They have been
put up with more secure steel cable. Also, there will be three antique
lights installed at the Homes.
PROPANE HEATER
Bill'Byers mentioned that during the cold months, it is necessary to provide
some heat into the Himes Log House. He has received estimates on heaters.
A motion was made by Helen Payton that we buy a propane heater. Second was
made by Michelle Burger. Motion passed.

Weldon Cannon mentioned that he and Patti attended a meeting of Historians in
Austin, Texas. Next year this meeting will be held in El Paso.
He indicated for informational purposes that the surrounding cities have
formed Historical Societies which is not a part of the City HistoricAl
Preservation Committee - but is a separate entity. The Cities of Grapevine
and Irving have evening meetings by their Historical societies.
GENEALOGY SECTION IN LIBRARY
The Mid Cities Genealogy Society meets at our Library. They discuss local
history versus genealogy. Weldon recommended that our Library have a
Genealogy Section in which we could rotate documents and displays.
Bill Byers said that this has already been taken care of.
Glenda Hartsell reminded the Committee of the "OPEN HOUSE" the City is
having on March 23, 2002. Citizens could start at the Courtyard at Hwy 10
to receive a passport. They will be able to visit some seven facilities
either by shuttle or private vehicle. Their passport will be stamped at
each famility then their names will be entered in a drawing.
Bill and Boyce Byers and Michelle and Dan Burger have volunteered to work
at the two homes on that day.
Glenda also reminded the Committee of the April Trash-off and the Easter
House.
Troy Fuller and Ginger Fuller will be docents in April for the Saturday
open house.
Helen Payton brought some 12 piano rolls for the player piano which were
donated by Maurine Baker. She also passed a copy of a response to her
letter from Action Piano Company. Bill Byers volunteered to get the serial
number from the piano and possibly take a picture.
ADJOURNMENT
Weldon Cannon motioned that we adjourn the meeting. Motion was seconded
by Don Tharp. Meeting was adjourned at 11:30 AM.
