HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-02-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 10, 2003 Call to Order Chairman Bill Byers called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. Members Present Craig Ward, Willie Mae McCormick, Michele Burger, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Weldon Cannon, Bill Byers, Dan Clark, Jean Whitener, Ralph Williamson, and Helen Lightbody. Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Deitre Burns, Community Relations and Events Supervisor Visitor Present Norma Lively Treasurer's Report Treasurer, Robert Nail reported that there were no changes in the balance since last month's report. Approval of Minutes Robert Nail made a motion to approve the minutes. Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. Motion was passed. Old Business 1. Bill Byers reported that the sidewalk around the Fuller House will be worked on by the PARKS Department. This would enable better wheelchair access to the house. 2. Iva Nail suggested that curtains and blinds in the Fuller House should be professionally cleaned by Arbor Daze. Discussion was held on the best way to do this. Bill Byers reported that the chinking completed at the Himes Log House has been completed. A suggestion was made by Jean Whitener to have a picture of the house framed. New Business 1. Michele Burger suggested that "Thank You" notes be sent to those people who assisted on Education Day, December 12, 2002. Robert Nail also suggested that the cards should include a thank you from the City of Euless as well. (Thank you notes were sent to: Walter Fisher, 5513 Montclair, Coffeyville, TX 76031, Jay C. Seals, 2711 Dell Court, Grapevine, TX. 76051, and Kathy Clark, 617 Pecos Dr., Euless, TX 76039). 2. It was suggested that a book of remembrance be made of different people who contributed to the history of Euless. This book should include pictures with biographies of each person. Dan Clark volunteered to set-up the format and Weldon Cannon will assist with the information. 3. Weldon Cannon provided information on the history of Euless. Euless was incorporated on February 21, 1953. Weldon also brought minutes from the Commissioners Court from 1950-1953 and articles from the 1950's. Copies of these items were passed out to everyone. 4. Norma Lively provided information on the history of the First United Methodist Church. The church was founded in 1876 and a brief history of the church was discussed. The Church is also working on obtaining a historical Marker. 5. Weldon Cannon brought copies of a history book from Bedford County, Tennessee. He is giving one copy to the Euless Public Library and another copy to the Bedford Library. Weldon will also give a speech at TCC on the migration from Tennessee to Euless, Bedford and Grapevine. In July, Weldon will give the same speech to the Bedford Historical Society in Tennessee. 6. Irving is celebrating it's centennial. A brief history of the First Baptist Church in Euless and how the railroad greatly impacted migration to Euless was discussed. 7. Jeff Towne provided six leaner signs announcing the "Open House". Signs are to be displayed around the City; one (1) in front of the Library, one (1) at Home Depot, one (1) at the Midway Rec Center, one (1) at Taco Bell, one (1) at Hwy. 10 and Cullum and one (1) at the Post Office. It was decided that docents should put the signs out on Saturday. 8. Iva Nail suggested that a doorbell for the front and back door of Fuller House might be useful. Bill Byers will look into purchasing a couple wireless doorbells from Home Depot for the House. 9. Suzanne Hendrickson mentioned that Lori de La Cruz has made the necessary date correction to 1953 as requested. Suzanne also stated that the Euless Web Site is being updated to a new format and the Heritage area will feature the Fuller House and Himes Log House including pictures. EHPC 021003 Mtg. Page 2 10_ Mayor Saleh attended a meeting at the Old Bedford School and Donna Jones indicated that she would like to bring eight people to tour the two homes on February 27th from 10a.m. 11 a.m. The committee agreed to do this, Michele Burger and either Weldon Cannon or Billy Byers will conduct the tour. 11. Docents for March 8th are Jimmy and Helen Payton. Adjournment Weldon Cannon made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Robert Nail seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 11:14 am.
