HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-10-13 Euless Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 13, 2003 Call to Order Chairman Bill Byers called the meeting to order at 11:05 a.m. Members Present Bill Byers, Helen Lightbody, Willie Mae McCormick, Weldon Cannon, Don Tharp, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Dan Clark, Chris Jones, Iva Nail,Michele Burger, Betty Fuller and Ralph Williamson Visitor Councilman Leon Hogg Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa"Mary"Faiva-Siale, Recreation Specialist-Projects &Events Treasurer's Report No report was given. Approval of Minutes The following corrections were made to last month's minutes: 1. Under Old Business, number 3: Weldon Cannon wanted it clarified that his speech was on all the families who came from Tennessee to settle this area and not just his family. 2. Under New Business, number 1: Harvey Little donated the Lasso, Troy Fuller just brought it in. Helen Payton made a motion for the minutes to be passed with the corrections. Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. Motion passed. EHPC 101303 Mtg. Page 1 Old Business 1. Chris Jones and Don Tharp were docents last month. Chris Jones reported on the following: a. 18 people toured the Museum. b. Reported that the latch on the Himes Log House front door was not working properly. Bill Byers will take a look at it. c. Mentioned that a gentleman came by on Saturday looking for old maps of Euless to see if he can locate where he used to live. A brief discussion was held on the possibility of providing a map for the museum. It was agreed that Weldon Cannon would provide a copy of his cemetery geographical map to be kept at the Fuller House. 2. The North window of the Himes Log House will need to be treated for wood bores. Bill Byers informed Gary McKamie of the problem. 3. Bill Byers reported that he drilled holes into the ground in areas where"Open House" signs are to be placed. This will help make it easier for docents to put the signs into the ground. Mr. Byers will draw up a map of these locations to make it easier for docents to locate. 4. Regarding the committee's Glen Rose field trip: a. Michele Burger asked for a show of hands of those going on the field trip and ten people will go. b. Everyone will meet at the Fuller House parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and depart at 9:30 a.m. c. Suzanne Hendrickson reported that she has not been able to locate a person with a CDL license available to drive the senior bus for the group. She also mentioned if no one with a CDL license is located to drive the bus, one of the recreation vans could be used. 5. Suzanne reported that Johnnie Green is still looking into having an enclosure built for the portable toilets requested by the committee. Further update on the progress of this request will be provided in the future. 6. Robert Nail reported that there have been electrical outages on some of the outlets at the Fuller House. Suzanne Hendrickson will send in a work order on this. 7. Dan and Michele Burger will be docents for November. New Business 1. Michele Burger donated the following items to the museum: a. A Michele baby doll b. A LBJ plate EHPC 101303 Mtg. Page 2 c. An old Boot vase d. A metal plate with the United States of America seal on it e. A 50th Anniversary sign in book, that might be used for Heritage Park Christmas f. A Dr Pepper recipe book g. A 1943 Blue Jackets Manual for sailors h. A Dough Boy Chaplain book i. An old water dipper j. Crocheted Japanese lanterns k. Museum gel 1. A welcome flag with a log house on it. Mrs. Burger requested permission to purchase a pole for the flag. m. An old milk jug n. A Tea kettle o. A scale p. A balloon machine to blow up balloons q. Mrs. Burger also mentioned that Nicolas Plummer has a kettle corn popper that he would like to donate to the museum. It was mentioned that the machine is about 6 foot long. A discussion was held on the feasibility of housing such a piece. Several possibilities were raised including the possibility of housing the machine in the barn that Willie Mae McCormick is donating. Bill Byers mentioned that he would look at the machine and then figure out what needs to be done regarding it. 2. Dan Clark brought up a point regarding items that are donated to the museum. He mentioned that it might be best for the museum not to accept every item that people want to get rid off. He also mentioned that just because an item is old doesn't necessarily belong to the time that the house is from, therefore it may not necessarily be appropriate to acquire such an item. Several committee members agreed. 3. Weldon Cannon reported that he gave his speech on the settling of this area to the Genealogical Society's meeting on October 2nd. Mr. Cannon also stated that he will give this same speech to the Irving Genealogical Society on November 17th at 6:30 p.m. at their Library. 4. Suzanne Hendrickson reminded the committee of the following: a. Halloween Thing on October 31st at the Midway Recreation Center. b. The Veterans Day Celebration will be on November 8th at the Parks at Texas Star at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Michele Burger mentioned that she had not received an invitation yet. Suzanne Hendrickson will send her an invitation. c. The Christmas Parade will be December 6th. 5. Suzanne Hendrickson had a question about the Heritage Park celebration planning process. Several committee members mentioned that the City of Euless would plan and set up the whole event and committee members will take care of all the tours for the day. Suzanne informed the committee that there will be a candy cane hunt and a birthday cake in the shape of a log house to help celebrate the day. EHPC 101303 Mtg. Page 3 6. A brief discussion was held on acquiring permanent nametags for several committee members. Suzanne Hendrickson will see about obtaining name tags for Robert Nail, Ralph Williamson, Chris Jones, Don Tharp and Craig Ward. 7. Bill Byers suggested that committee members wear their denim long sleeve shirts for the Heritage Park Christmas celebration. Helen Lightbody, Willie Mae McCormick and Chris Jones will need shirts and Suzanne Hendrickson will get shirts for them. 8. Willie Mae McCormick thanked everyone for her birthday party. She stated that she really enjoyed it.
