HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-11-08 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes November 8, 2004 Call to Order Chair, Billy Byers called the meeting to order at 10:09 a.m. Members Present Billy Byers, Jean Whitener, Don Tharp, Craig Ward, Ralph Williamson, Nell Hicks, Dan Clark, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Betty Fuller, Tom Stover, Willie Mae McCormick, Michele Burger, Helen Lightbody Visitor Council Member Veva Lou Massey David Massey Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Treasures Report Treasurer Robert Nail reported a balance of$11,265.88. Approval of Minutes Iva Nail motioned for the minutes to be approved. Dan Clark seconded the motion. Motion approved. Old Business 1. It was decided that the Lexcan covering all the windows at the Fuller House will be replaced with screens. Suzanne Hendrickson mentioned that Facilities is working with her on quotes for the removal of the covering. 2. The outside door in the back bedroom will be replaced and all doors in the Museum will be repainted. 3. Betty Fuller reported that she will submit the Historical Marker application for the house on Main Street this week. EHPC Mtg. 121304 1 4. One more Elementary School is scheduled to tour the Museum on November 30 at 9 a.m. There will be four sections. New Business 1. Betty Fuller suggested that a photo file of notable historical sites be started. Dan Clark volunteered to take the pictures. The following were mentioned as locations that need to be photographed: a. The house where Mr. Byers' mother was born b. The Chittamwood tree on Mrs. McCormick's property c. The old Western Hills Inn d. The tree in the Conway's front yard on Pipeline Road e. The tree that is across from Mr. and Mrs. Nail's home 2. Mrs. McCormick gave Suzanne Hendrickson a list of approximately 30 varieties of trees located on her property. This list will be kept for the City's history and the planning of the Preserve at McCormick Park. 3. Mr. Byers would like to have a Well House built south of the Log House. He mentioned the Well would need to be 2 ft. deep and 30 inches above ground, made of dark sandstone rocks like those on the Himes Log House chimney. He also mentioned a door would be built on top of the Well and kept closed when not attended. Evelyn Himes has a Hexagon shaped pulley that came off of the old Well that could be used on this project. Mr. Byers will obtain cost estimates for the project. 4. Thomas Stover asked about a"sucker rod" for the Windmill. Michele Burger will call the person who donated the windmill to see about buying one to show how the Windmill worked. 5. Mr. Nail mentioned a metal plaque for the Himes Log House that would display a brief history of the home. 6. Weldon Cannon mentioned that many City Historical Markers are personally designed by individual Cities. A brief description of how a marker may look was given. Weldon Cannon motioned for research to be conducted to see about developing a City of Euless Historical Marker design. Betty Fuller seconded the motion. Motion approved. 7. Robert Nail reported that 228 Elementary school students toured Heritage Park since the last meeting. In addition, 11 teachers, the Mayor and her granddaughter also visited the Museum. 8. It was mentioned that cotton could be planted in the garden. 9. Mrs. McCormick was glad to be back and see everyone. 10. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. Kidfish will be this Saturday,November 13 at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Wilshire Park. EHPC Mtg. 121304 2 b. November 15 will be the Boards and Commissions Dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Texas Star. c. November 17 will be the Senior Luncheon at North Main Barbeque at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. d. There will be an Arts & Crafts show at the Midway Recreation Center on Saturday, December 4 at 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday December 5, at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. e. The Holidaze KidZone event will be on December 4, at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. f. The Parade will be on the same day, December 4, at 6:30 p.m. g. December 11 will be Heritage Park Christmas at 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Choirs have been confirmed, the Blacksmith and the Petting Zoo will be there and so will Mr. and Mrs. Clause. Hot Chocolate, Apple Cider and Cookies will be served. h. Reported that the City of Euless will be involved in the Airport R&R Program starting December 6 to December 12. i. Thanked Ofa"Mary" for helping with the school tours. 11. The next meeting will be at Jimmy and Helen Payton's house on December 13. 12. Docents for December will be Ralph Williamson and Billy Byers.
