HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-04-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes April 11,2005 Call to Order Chair,Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. Members Present Betty Fuller, Weldon Cannon, Iva Nail, Troy Fuller, Willie Mae McCormick, Helen Lightbody, Chris Jones, Ralph Williamson, Craig Ward, Jean Whitener, Michele Burger, Helen Payton, Evelyn Himes, Robert Nail Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Visitors Mayor Mary Lib Saleh Council Member Glenn Porterfield Council Member Linda Martin Council Member Leon Hogg Bill and Boyce Byers Treasures Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of $10,934.14. It was mentioned that most of the money was donated by Willie Mae McCormick and a good bit of it will be used to move the barn to Heritage Park. Approval of Minutes Two corrections were made to the minutes from the March meeting: 1. Mrs. Fuller pointed out that the word "Jerry" under New Business item 1 e, should be spelled J-a-r-y. 2. Weldon Cannon mentioned that the word "classes" under New Business item 2a, should be changed to say"programs". Weldon Cannon motioned for the minutes to be approved with the corrections above, Iva Nail seconded the motion,motion approved. Old Business 1. It was reported that 25 people visited the museum on April 9 and several of those that visited were from Southlake. New Business 1. Betty Fuller reported that Gary McKamie and Bill Marquis met at Mrs. McCormick's barn. Bill Marquis may be at the next meeting to discuss with the committee the process of moving the barn. 2. Weldon Cannon reported that Dr. Rhoads, a Tarrant County Physician from the 1900's, has a granddaughter who will be visiting the area on Tuesday, April 19. She may be visiting the museum. 3. Weldon Cannon reported that the text for the Euless Methodist Historical Marker is still under review. 4. Mr. Cannon also reported that he went to Abilene this past weekend and was able to obtain additional information on Mrs. Posey, the SMU student who wrote an essay on Euless in the 1930's. 5. Mrs. McCormick invited everyone to come by her property and see the Indian Paint brush growing there. 6. Council Member Glenn Porterfield expressed his appreciation for everything the committee has done in the preservation of Euless' history. 7. Council Member Linda Martin mentioned how much she has learned from each of the committee members and expressed her appreciation as well. 8. Mayor Mary Lib Saleh expressed her appreciation for the committee's work. The Mayor mentioned that Bill Marquis has invited the committee to his place for a tour. It was decided that the committee would tour Mr. Marquis' home on May 5. 9. Mr. Byers reported to the committee that Willie Pearl Himes from Jackson, Tennessee visited Euless about three weeks ago and she toured the Museum. 10. Mr. Byers also reported that Thad Himes gave a wooden replica of the Himes Log House to the museum. Mr. Himes made the replica from a photograph. 11. Mrs. Byers suggested that the dog on the front porch of the Log House be given a name. Evelyn Himes suggested it be named`Bulger". Troy Fuller motioned for approval of this name, Weldon Cannon seconded the motion, motion approved. The motion was amended to include a name tag for the dog. It was also mentioned that the dog needs to be cleaned. 12. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. Work on the Splash Pad is on schedule and will be open by this summer b. The Preserve at McCormick Park construction has begun c. Phase III at the Parks at Texas Star is almost complete d. Arbor Daze will be on April 22 to April 24 e. Suzanne Hendrickson discussed with the committee ideas for a quarterly program regarding Euless History. She asked the committee to brainstorm different ideas on subjects for each program. The following suggestions were made: 1. Street names in Euless (Weldon Cannon could speak on this topic) 2. History of the Post Office(Robert Nail could speak on this topic) 3. Schools in Euless 4. Churches in Euless 5. Families in Euless (Billy Byers could speak on this topic) 6. Public Service 7. Impact of Aviation in Euless 8. Agriculture (Farming& Dairy) 9. 50 years of Euless progress in business, schools,public services 10. History of how the city has grown in the past 50 years 11. Mrs. Fuller suggested the topic of "Euless: Did you know?" with the following topics: a. the Milk Processing Plant b. Ice House c. Audie Murphy Arena d. Cotton gin Suzanne will begin coordinating these ideas into a series of programs to be held throughout the year. f. Mrs. McCormick mentioned that North Euless was not a part of Euless until the 1960's 13. Michele and Dan Burger will docent in May, Troy Fuller and Bill Byers will docent in June. Mrs. Fuller will check with Helen Lightbody and Dan Clark for the month of July. Adjournment Robert Nail motioned for the meeting to adjourn. Ralph Williamson seconded the motion.
