HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-06-13 • Historical Preservation Committee Minutes June 13,2005 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. Members Present Betty Fuller, Helen Lightbody, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Thomas Stover, Evelyn Himes, Weldon Cannon, Troy Fuller, Iva Nail Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Recreation Specialist Visitor Paul Martin Approval of Minutes The following corrections were made to the minutes from the May meeting: a. Under Treasurers report, it should say that Sally McCutcheon is the granddaughter of Dr. Rhodes,not his great-granddaughter. b. Under Treasurers report, it states that a donation was made by the late Mr. Don Tharp. The donation was in honor of Mr. Don Tharp and not made by him. Troy Fuller motioned for the minutes to be approved with the corrections. Evelyn Himes seconded the motion. Motion approved. Treasurers Report Treasurer, Robert Nail reported that he received two checks as a memorial to the late Mr. Don Tharp. One check was for $25 and the other check was for $50. The $25 dollar check has been deposited into the Committee's account. A check for $7,000 was given to Mr. Marquis for work on the McCormick barn. This left a final balance of$4,509.14. This balance does not include the second check of$50 received in memory of Mr. Tharp. Old Business 1. Troy Fuller reported that 18 people visited the Museum on Saturday. He explained that everything went well. Paul Martin, a visitor to the Museum on Saturday, was introduced to the committee. Mr. Martin reported that he had a difficult time fmding out the location of the Fuller House. He mentioned that he called several phone numbers within the city and no one knew where Heritage Park was. He also noted that he got in touch with the "Texas State Travel Guide" and Heritage Park was not listed in it as well. 2. Iva and Robert Nail reported that they gave Willie Mae Tillery Lemons a tour of Heritage Park on Saturday. 3. Mrs. Fuller brought up for discussion the moving of the McCormick barn to Heritage Park. Newspaper articles from the Dallas Morning News and Star Telegram were passed around for the committee's viewing. Robert Nail donated both articles to the Museum. Various mention of Mrs. McCormick's happy reaction to the success of the move was mentioned. Betty Fuller proceeded to read a letter from Willie Mae McCormick thanking the committee, the City of Euless and its citizens for their hard work with regards to the barn. (see attached) Several committee members thanked "Mary" for calling to notify them that the barn had been moved. Some committee members stopped by to see the barn at Heritage Park. New Business 1. Betty Fuller discussed the following with the committee: a. Inquired about the progress on`Burger's"name tag. b. A donation from the late Mr. Willhoite of Grapevine was discussed. It was later mentioned that a donation of an item might have already been received. c. Suzanne Hendrickson will provide Mrs. Fuller with copies of recorded artifacts located inside the Fuller House. While the committee breaks for summer, Mrs. Fuller would like to make a list of all items not yet recorded in the museum. d. Reminded the committee to think over topics for the quarterly programs. e. The next committee meeting will be on September 12. 2. Troy Fuller reported on the following: a. Mr. Fuller reported on the flag presentation ceremony honoring Kyle Eggers that was held at the May 31 Council meeting. A City of Euless flag which was flown in Iraq where Kyle Eggers was stationed was presented back to the City of Euless by Kyle's parents Keith and Diane Eggers. b. Mentioned that he spoke with Joe Hennig about the "shortage" with docents and volunteers for the committee. Mr. Hennig informed Mr. Fuller that he wasn't aware that the situation existed. Mr. Hennig also mentioned that if the committee needed anything to let him know and he would have it taken care of. c. While on vacation in Europe, Mr. Fuller toured several Museums. He mentioned that one Museum had self guided audio (cassette) tours available where a person could go through the tour at his or her own pace. Mr. Fuller inquired about the possibility of doing something like this for Heritage Park. d. Mr. Fuller offered to conduct one of the quarterly programs that Betty Fuller mentioned on the incorporation of the City of Euless. Mr. Fuller was on the Council when this occurred. 3. Robert Nail informed the committee that he has in his possession his fire fighter volunteer overalls from 1954. 4. Weldon Cannon reported and/or discussed the following: a. Donated a copy of the 1905 map he discussed at last month's meeting to the Museum. Committee members were also given copies of said map. b. Reported that he attended a Bear Creek Cemetery Association meeting. The Bear Creek Cemetery Association highly praised the City of Euless and its Mayor for all their interest and care toward the preservation of history. c. Attended a meeting of the Birdville Historical Society. d. Attended a meeting at Pleasant Run Baptist Church. Mr. Cannon donated a copy of a booklet written by Mike Patterson, a Civil War veteran's researcher from the meeting. The booklet contained information on 183 Civil War veterans that lived in the area. e. Mr. Cannon reported that he discussed with Gary McKamie a plaque to be placed on the location of the new fire station on South Main Street. This site is historically significant as this was where Tom Fuller's post office was located. Ross Cannon purchased the land in 1931. A write-up for a plaque has been completed by Mr. Cannon and given to Mr. McKamie. A dedication of the plaque may occur prior to the next historical meeting. Suzanne Hendrickson will send reminders to committee members if this should occur. f. Mr. Cannon expressed deep concerns about the lack of records on locations with historical significance. For example there are no historical accountings kept on Fire Stations and Libraries. Mr. Cannon urged the committee to keep this in mind. g. Weldon Cannon mentioned that Willie Mae McCormick may be the oldest living graduate from Mary Harden Baylor University or "Baylor Female College". He heard mentioned that Mrs. McCormick will be honored in the college's summer "Alumni News"edition. 5. A discussion was held regarding various projects that should be completed in order to do a better job at recording historical facts. Iva Nail suggested that the committee could prioritize different projects and begin working on projects with highest priorities first. Various Committee members offered encouragement with regards to all the work the Committee has completed thus far. 6. Iva Nail donated an angel to the Museum. 7. Suzanne Hendrickson reported and/or informed the committee of the following: a. Passed out Boards and Commissions application forms to committee members. Additional copies were left at the Museum for distribution to interested visitors. b. Heritage Park Christmas will be on Saturday, December 10 from 1 p.m.to 5 p.m. c. Suzanne will work on a recruitment brochure for new volunteer and committee member. d. Currently working on the display case cover sheet and`Bulger's"name tag. e. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the "Mission Statement" sub-committee meeting held on June 2. Committee members will consider changes and/or improvements to the statement that was presented and further discussion will be held when the committee meets again in September. 8. Mrs. Nail mentioned that Mr. Nail has been very complimentary of Suzanne and "Mary" for the great job they do for the historical committee. Other committee members expressed their appreciation as well. 9. Docents for July 9 will be Helen Lightbody and Dan Clark. Docents for August 13 will be Betty Fuller and Helen Payton and docent for September 10 will be Thomas Stover. Troy Fuller and Weldon Cannon are tentatively scheduled to work with Mr. Stover. Suzanne Hendrickson will send reminders to all docents.
