HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-09-12 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 12, 2005 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. Members Present Thomas Stover, Helen Lightbody, Robert Nail, Michele Burger, Iva Nail, Betty Fuller, Dan Clark, Weldon Cannon, Craig Ward, Troy Fuller, Ralph Williamson Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Recreation Specialist Visitor Angela Baker Approval of Minutes The following correction was made to the minutes from the June meeting: a. Under adjournment, it should have said the meeting adjourned at 11:37 a.m. instead of 1 1:37 p.m. Helen Lightbody motioned for the minutes to be approved with the correction. Iva Nail seconded the motion. Motion approved. Treasurers Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported that he received a $50 check which he has deposited into the committee's account. Another check for$100 was received but had not been deposited as of yet. The final balance reported by Mr. Nail was $4,559.14. Old Business 1. Betty Fuller thanked Dan Clark and Helen Lightbody for acting as docents on July 9. Helen Lightbody reported that 8 people visited the museum that day. 2. Previously, the committee agreed that donor information needed to be collected on all artifacts in the Fuller House museum. Once gathered, donor information would be entered into the historical database installed by Suzanne Hendrickson a couple of months EHPC Mtg. 101005 1 before. Mrs. Fuller and Weldon Cannon started the recording process during open house on July 9. Mrs. Fuller explained that items marked with green dots are items already recorded and red dotted items are items not yet recorded. It was noted that items inside the Himes Log House have not been inventoried. Mrs. Fuller invited the committee to keep in mind the possibility of everyone coming together to complete the inventory process on a selected date. 3. Troy Fuller, Helen Payton and Jimmy Payton acted as docents on August 13. Mrs. Payton and Betty Fuller worked on the inventory that day. It was reported that during the day, Mr. Payton canvassed visitors on how they heard about the museum. Mrs. Fuller indicated that it was apparent from Mr. Payton's inquiries that the Library would be an excellent place to post open house signs. Mrs. Fuller reported that over 23 people toured Heritage Park that day. 4. Weldon Cannon and Thomas Stover were docents on September 10. Mr. Cannon reported that 16 people toured the museum. Mrs. Fuller thanked Mr. Stover for helping with the inventory that day. 5. Betty Fuller discussed and/or reported on the following: a. Presented for the committee's viewing the display case cover sheet previously requested by the committee. Jeff Town, Graphics Artist with the Recreation Department, designed the cover sheet. Committee members were very pleased with the cover sheet. b. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. Fuller expressed appreciation to the City of Euless and Bill Marquis for relocating and restoring the McCormick barn to its current location and condition. Mrs. Fuller mentioned that she received a letter expressing the same sentiment from Mrs. McCormick. c. Inquired about the status of the new fire station's plaque dedication. Neither Suzanne Hendrickson nor Weldon Cannon had information on when this would occur. Mr. Cannon has completed the "write up" for the plaque that will go on the new site. d. Inquired about the "Vision Statement" sub-committee's meeting. Rough draft copies of the vision statement from the sub-committee's meeting were passed out for proofing and approval. Dan Clark commented that the statement sounds more like a "mission" statement instead of a"vision" statement. He suggested it should be called a "mission" statement instead. Suggestions were also offered by Mrs. Fuller, Mr. Cannon and Mr. Stover regarding the current statement. Mrs. Fuller suggested that Mr. Clark meet again with the "Vision Statement" sub-committee to finalize changes to the current statement and to report back at the next regular committee meeting. The current statement could not be voted on today. e. Opened the floor for Suzanne Hendrickson to discuss the "How We Lived" booklet and the "volunteer recruitment" brochure previously discussed by the committee. Drafts of these two brochures were given to the committee for proofing. Suzanne indicated that the brochures could go to print soon after the committee proofs the draft. f. Reported that the subject of`Bulger's" name will go before council this week. EHPC Mtg. 101005 2 g. Informed the committee that the City will have funds available to fix the fence around McCormick Barn after October 1. h. Inquired if anyone knew who donated various farm equipments in the back room of the Fuller House. Mr. Nail explained that Mr. Keith Brown donated a majority of the equipment. New Business 1. Betty Fuller discussed and/or reported on the following: a. Mrs. Fuller is a member of the Tarrant County Historical Commission. She extended invitations to anyone in the committee that would to like attend the 2nd Annual Historical Preservation Summit to be held in the Wylie G. Thomas Coliseum on September 22, 2005. Weldon Cannon will be a guest speaker at the event. Mrs. Fuller also indicated that she spoke with Joe Hennig about the possibility of the City of Euless hosting such an event in the future. Mr. Hennig was agreeable to the idea. b. Mrs. Fuller is also a member of the Volunteer of the Year selection committee with the City of Euless. A nomination form was passed around for possible nominations. Mrs. Fuller asked for names of businesses that could be noted for the award. c. Reported that she found the kitchen entrance into Fuller House unsecured last week. "Mary" Faiva-Siale arrived at Fuller House a short time after Mrs. Fuller and realized the same thing. Joe Hennig and Suzanne Hendrickson were informed. "Mary" called Facilities and the door was fixed within a short time after the problem was noted. Weldon Cannon reported that he had to file down the top panel of the front door because it was tightly wedged to the top of the frame. It was discussed that the building has shifted resulting in the problems with the doors. Suzanne Hendrickson will inform Facilities to inspect all doors in the building and to make repairs accordingly. d. Mrs. Fuller indicated to Suzanne Hendrickson that the Library book sale hours listed in Euless Today is incorrect. The book sale will be on Friday, September 23, 3 p.m. — 6 p.m.; on Saturday 24, 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. and on Sunday 25, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mrs. Fuller is a member of the Library Board. 2. Mrs. Fuller introduced Angela Baker to the committee. Ms. Baker is Mrs. Willie Mae McCormick's companion, she was asked by Mrs. McCormick to attend the meeting on her behalf and to report back regarding the meeting. Ms. Baker reported on Mrs. McCormick's well being and committee members were glad to hear about Mrs. McCormick's welfare. 3. Suzanne Hendrickson will begin scheduling the monthly historical programs previously discussed by the committee. Suzanne Hendrickson and Troy Fuller will schedule the best time for Mr. Fuller to conduct the first lecture. Mr. Fuller will speak on the Incorporation of Euless. Potential speakers previously discussed by the committee will be contacted to schedule the first set of classes for next year. Advertising for said classes will be in the next issue of Euless Today. EHPC Mtg. 101005 3 4. Weldon Cannon reported on the following: a. The final draft of the First United Methodist Church of Euless' Historical Marker has been sent to Austin for casting. Mr. Cannon estimated that it will probably be ready for dedication sometime in the fall or winter. b. Inquired if it was possible to receive his minutes earlier than when he has been receiving it. Mr. Cannon's minutes will be mailed earlier than previously have been. c. Reported that the hand rails up the east entrance into the Himes Log House is very loose and needs to be fixed. Parks will be notified to correct the problem. 5. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. Reminded the committee that Board & Commission applications are due to Susan Crim by Friday, September 16. The committee previously discussed several candidates as possible committee members. b. Gave a reminder about the Volunteer Banquet on September 23 at the Midway Recreation Center. Committee members were mailed invitations for the event. c. Heritage Park Christmas will be discussed at next month's meeting. 6. Ralph Williamson reported that he will be going in for major eye surgery next Tuesday. He thanked Suzanne Hendrickson for sending a"get well" card. 7. Michele and Dan Burger will docent on October 8.
