HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-11-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes November 14, 2005 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. Members Present Iva Nail, Ralph Williamson, Michele Burger, Chris Jones, Dan Clark, Weldon Cannon, Jean Whitener, Betty Fuller, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Troy Fuller Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Recreation Specialist Visitors Council Member Leon Hogg Council Member Veva Lou Massey David Massey Norma Lively Bill Byers Boyce Byers Patricia Benoit Cannon Approval of Minutes The following corrections were made to October's minutes: a. On the agenda it shows the address for Fuller House as 205 Cullum Drive. The correct address is 203 Cullum Drive. b. Under New Business, item #12, Chris Jones donated one Northeast Tarrant County telephone directory and one HEB directory, not two Northeast Tarrant County directories. Chris Jones motioned for the minutes to be approved with the corrections. Troy Fuller seconded the motion. Motion approved. Treasurer's Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported that the Committee's balance remains the same as last month's at $4,134.14. EHPC Mtg. 121205 Old Business 1. Iva and Robert Nail and Michele Burger were docents on Saturday, November 12. Billy and Boyce Byers and Helen Payton were also on site to help. Michele Burger reported that 29 people visited the Museum that day. 2. Previously, the regular Committee established an Acquisition Sub-Committee for the purpose of approving and documenting artifacts being donated to the Museum. Members of said committee are Dan Clark, Chair, Michele Burger, Robert Nail, Chris Jones, Iva Nail and Helen Payton. Starting in January, 2006, David Massey and Boyce Byers will also serve on the Acquisition Committee. Dan Clark reported that since the inception of the Acquisition Committee a couple meetings had been held, however; soon thereafter items were accepted into the Museum without the Acquisition Committee's approval. Mr. Clark asked that the regular Committee decide whether it wants the Acquisition Committee to continue in the above stated purpose or should it be terminated. He also asked that if the regular Committee opted for the Acquisition Committee to continue in its purpose, then it should be understood and agreed upon that future donations may not be accepted by the Museum unless pre-approved by the Acquisition Committee. Regular Committee members agreed that there is a need for the Acquisition Committee to continue and to carry out its above stated function. It was agreed upon that all future donations shall go through the Acquisition Committee for approval and documentation. It was also mentioned that the Acquisition Committee should not accept more than two items of the same kind. 3. In the past, a Display Committee was also established by the regular Committee to be in charge of displaying of artifacts. Members of said committee are Betty Fuller, Chair, Iva Nail, Helen Payton, Evelyn Himes, Michele Burger, Thomas Stover, Dan Clark, Nell Hicks and Chris Jones. New member Glenn Walker will also serve on this committee starting January 1. Mrs. Fuller stepped down as Chair of the Display Committee and Bill Byers was asked to replace Mrs. Fuller. Mr. Byers accepted the responsibility. 4. Norma Lively reported that the First United Methodist Church of Euless marker is being cast at this time. Weldon Cannon added that Norma Lively is coordinating the preparations and preplanning required prior to a marker dedication. Committee members will be notified once a dedication date has been confirmed. 5. Bill Byers reported on the matching grant application he submitted for restoration work on Richard Calloway's grave. Mr. Byers explained that the condition of Mr. Calloway's grave is in serious need of repair. He is awaiting a response from the Tarrant County Historical Commission relative to the application he submitted. Weldon Cannon added that Maryanne Trigg, also known as the "Mother of Euless", is also buried at Calloway Cemetery and her grave requires work as well. 6. Weldon Cannon and his wife Patricia Benoit offered to put together a mailing list and to mail out information regarding donations to help maintain the Calloway Cemetery. Committee members were asked if possible to provide names of people they know who have descendants buried at Calloway Cemetery. 7. Mrs. Fuller distributed schedules for next year's Elementary School tours (see attached). EHPC Mtg. 121205 8. A rededication date for the Mosier Valley School Marker has not been determined yet. Committee members will be informed when a date is set. 9. Committee members were reminded of the Boards and Commission Appreciation Dinner to be held at 6:30 p.m. that evening at Texas Star. 10. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. The first quarterly program will be on January 19, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall in the Council Chambers. Troy Fuller will be speaking on the incorporation of Euless and a PowerPoint presentation will be put together for the program. b. Reminded the Committee that information for the second quarterly program will be needed in the near future for inclusion in the Spring/Summer edition of Euless Today. c. The pamphlet and volunteer brochure are being worked on. d. Informed the Committee that the current Fuller House and Himes Log House brochures are running low. New brochures will need to be made and the Committee was asked if they would like to continue with two separate brochures for the facility or would they like to have one brochure for Heritage Park to include everything on the property. Ralph Williamson motioned for one Heritage Park brochure. Troy Fuller seconded the motion. All committee members were in favor, motion approved. e. Regarding the City Marker program discussed at last month's meeting: Suzanne reported that the Historical Preservation Committee could apply for Certified Local Government status with the Texas Historical Commission; this would give the Committee more clout when implementing the program. Council would also have to be approached regarding an ordinance pertaining to the preservation of historical properties, artifacts, etc. Weldon Cannon made a motion for the Historical Preservation Committee to apply for Certified Local Government status with the Texas Historical Commission and to approach Council for an ordinance pertaining to the preservation of the history of the area. Dan Clark seconded the motion, all were in favor, motion approved. Betty Fuller was asked to contact the City Secretary's Office for the above motion to be placed on Council's agenda. 11. Helen Payton asked if a "tour script" could be made up for docents to use when conducting Museum tours. Mrs. Fuller reminded the Committee that it was agreed upon in past meetings that individual members were to complete written historical accounts of events and artifacts and Suzanne Hendrickson would put it together to be used by docents. 12. Mrs. Fuller asked for volunteers to work during Heritage Park Christmas on December 10 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Bill Byers, Michele and Dan Burger, Helen Payton, Iva and Robert Nail, Ralph Williamson, Chris Jones, Boyce Byers and Betty Fuller volunteered to docent during the event. Others in the Committee may be able to attend but will confirm later. 13. Mrs. Fuller reported that several people suggested to her it may be more secure to obtain a name plate for Bulger the dog instead of the bowl previously discussed by the Committee. The name plate could be bolted onto the pole near the dog thus making it secure against theft. Mrs. Fuller gave Bill Byers bids on nameplates and Mr. Byers will look into its purchase. EHPC Mtg. 121205 New Business 1. Betty Fuller along with others in the committee commended the Parks and Community Services staff on a job well done with regards to the Veterans Day celebration. 2. Iva Nail reported that O.D. and Norma Lively were very disappointed that they did not know about Veterans Field's dedication. Mr. and Mrs. Lively live on South Pipeline Road and therefore do not receive Euless mail. A discussion was held regarding the Lively's inability to receive Euless mail. The Parks & Community Services staff will send Mr. and Mrs. Lively a copy of Euless Today and all future water bill inserts which will contain information on all the department's events. 3. Helen Payton asked if it were possible to have three "Do Not Climb" signs made and placed on the Tomato Planter and both stairs inside the McCormick Barn and the Himes Log House. Signs will be made and placed on the above stated locations. 4. Betty Fuller asked for volunteers to help her docent on Wednesday,November 30 starting at 4 p.m. About 25 people with the Girl's Scout will tour Heritage Park on that day. Ralph Williamson volunteered to help Mrs. Fuller. Helen Payton was tentatively scheduled to work that day. 5. Weldon Cannon recently donated his father's tractor to the Museum. Mr. Cannon asked for a donation form to complete on the donation of the tractor. The tractor is located inside the McCormick Barn. 6. Michele Burger reported that the new entrance gate south of McCormick Barn doesn't have a lock. A new lock was put on the gate later that same day. 7. Betty Fuller reported that Vada Johnson was in the hospital due to severe dehydration. 8. Betty Fuller and David Massey will be working on an oral history to be given by Mrs. Margie Massey. 9. Mrs. Fuller informed the Committee that inventory of Heritage Park will be completed once the holidays are over. 10. Mrs. Fuller informed the Committee that the Tarrant County Historical Commission will be celebrating its 30 year anniversary with a "Christmas at the Courthouse" celebration on November 25 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Committee members were invited to attend the festivities. 11. Michele Burger reported wasp nests along the eaves of Fuller House. The Parks Department will be informed and the problem will be taken care of. 12. Betty Fuller reported that the butter mold is missing from the Fuller House. 13. Council Member Veva Lou Massey gave a reminder of the R & R Program that the City is coordinating during the week of November 14 to November 20. Council Member Massey provided details on how to be involved in the program. EHPC Mtg. 121205 14. Bill Byers reported that the new fence at Heritage Park is complete. The fence line was enlarged so that more room may be had for storage of artifacts in the future. The picnic table and grill will be kept inside the fenced area. 15. Council Member Leon Hogg thanked committee members for their hard work and care with regards to the preservation of the history of the area. Committee members expressed their appreciation of the support that Council and City staff have demonstrated towards the Historical Committee. 16. Ralph Williamson complimented the City on the Veterans Day ceremony. He stated that it was an emotional event and he enjoyed it. 17. Weldon Cannon is currently writing a history of Euless for a City of Euless Marker. The write up is near completion. He also indicated an interest in a future marker for the South Euless Elementary School location. 18. Robert Nail displayed his volunteer Fire Fighter coveralls for the committee's viewing. Pictures from Fire Station #3's dedication were passed around for the Committee's viewing. 19. Iva Nail asked if the Fuller House and the Himes Log House could be professionally cleaned prior to Heritage Park Christmas. Both facilities were cleaned on December 7. 20. Helen Payton volunteered to docent on January 7, 2006.
