HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-01-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes January 9, 2006 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. Members Present Betty Fuller, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Dan Clark, Thomas Stover, Ralph Williamson, Nell Hicks, Helen Payton, Boyce Byers, Glenn Walker, Robert Nail, Chris Jones, Troy Fuller, Iva Nail, Helen Lightbody, David Massey. Staff Present Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Visitors Patricia Benoit Approval of Minutes The following correction was made to December's minutes: a. Under approval of minutes: Mrs. Whitener's first name is spelled J-e-a-n and not G-e-n-e. Troy Fuller motioned for the minutes to be approved with the correction. Bill Byers seconded the motion. Motion approved. Treasurer's Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported that the Committee has a balance of $4,087.07. It was also reported that Mr. Byers has a check in the amount of$5,000 from Mrs. McCormick. Old Business 1. Mrs. Fuller informed the committee that Evelyn Himes had a doctor's appointment and couldn't make it to the meeting. 2. Bill Byers presented Bulger's new name tag to the committee. EHPC Mtg. 010906 3. Mrs. Fuller thanked committee members who were able to docent during the January 5, Bellaire Elementary School tour. Those that were present were Bill and Boyce Byers, Weldon Cannon, David Massey, Thomas Stover and Mrs. Fuller. Parks and Community Services staff members Jerry Poteet, Michael Davenport and Mary Faiva-Siale also helped that day. 4. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. Fuller thanked Jimmy and Helen Payton for hosting the committee's December meeting. Committee members were also thanked for providing food for the potluck that day. 5. Donna Park Elementary School is scheduled to tour Heritage Park on April 20 and Wilshire Elementary will tour the park on May 11. 6. Mrs. Fuller congratulated Bill and Boyce Byers for receiving the City of Euless' Lifetime Achievement Award. Committee members congratulated the Byers on receiving this prestigious award. 7. Robert Nail brought in the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram article regarding the dedication ceremony for Fire Station No. 3. 8. A reminder was given for Troy Fuller's presentation regarding the Incorporation of Euless. The program will be held in the Council Chambers on January 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 9. Robert Nail will speak regarding the first post office in Euless at the next quarterly program. 10. Suzanne Hendrickson was thanked for completing the "Heritage Park Docent Packet". Mrs. Fuller asked that the essay on the barn previously written by Mrs. McCormick be included in the packet as well. 11. Mrs. Fuller asked about the status of the local historical marker program. Suzanne Hendrickson indicted that she spoke with Joe Hennig about the idea and he asked that a more formal packet of information be prepared for his review. Suzanne is working on a presentation for the City Manager. 12. Mr. Massey and Mrs. Fuller will get together to develop some questions for their interview with Margie Massey. They will also schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Massey for this purpose. 13. A reminder was given regarding completing inventory of the Fuller House and out buildings. Additionally, Committee members were encouraged to tape record their thoughts and memories regarding different events, incidences, artifacts, etc. on Euless and the surrounding area. This would then be transcribed and given to each committee member to use when he or she docents. Members were informed that recording could be done on January 14 during open house. 14. Mr. Massey donated a cream can to the Museum. EHPC Mtg. 010906 15. Mrs. McCormick and the McCormick Barn: a. Gary McKamie and Bill Byers were able to meet with Mrs. McCormick. It was mentioned that Mrs. McCormick has 22 scrapbooks that will be picked up within the next two to three weeks and taken to the Library for storage. Weldon Cannon suggested that Mrs. McCormick's scrapbooks be cataloged with a description for storage at the Library. Mrs. Fuller indicated that she has spoken with Sherry Knight about having some of the scrapbooks rebound as there is a need for this. Ms. Knight indicated that funding may be available through the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society. b. Regarding Mrs. McCormick's $5,000 donation, Mrs. Boyce Byers made a motion to earmark the donation for use in obtaining artifacts and equipment for the McCormick Barn and for the preservation of Mrs. McCormick's documents, etc. Glenn Walker seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous, motion approved. 16. Dan Clark brought his camera and a picture of the Committee was taken in front of the McCormick Barn. New Business 1. Mrs. Byers asked about renting out the Fuller House and who is on site when rentals occur. Suzanne Hendrickson explained that all rentals of the Fuller House are cleared through the Chairperson of the Historical Preservation Committee. If committee members are unavailable to be on site during the rental, a Parks and Community Services staff member would then work the rental. She also indicated that there have not been many rentals in the past and that most rentals have involved a committee member or families with a connection to the properties at Heritage Park. 2. Iva Nail mentioned that she still has teaspoons that were given away at the Store when she was growing up. She also has a train case with fitted bottles in it (luggage that was popular in the 40's and 50's). In addition, she also has a metal Coke bottle case. 3. Weldon Cannon made a motion to authorize Bill Byers to coordinate with Harvey Little for the purchase of items for the McCormick Barn. The motion was seconded by Robert Nail. The vote was unanimous, motion approved. 4. Helen Lightbody, Troy Fuller, Ralph Williamson, Robert and Iva Nail and Bill and Boyce Byers will docent this Saturday, January 14. 5. Pattie Benoit wished everyone a great New Year. 6. David Massey suggested that the committee begin using the term Native Americans instead of Indians in their presentations. 7. Mrs. Fuller asked if there was anyone who would collect Euless Historical Articles from the Star-Telegram. Boyce Byers and Helen Payton were appointed for this task. Suzanne Hendrickson mentioned that she receives weekly articles from the City Secretary's office that she would be happy to pass along to the Committee.
