HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-09-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 11, 2006 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:09 a.m. Members Present Helen Lightbody, Michele Burger, Betty Fuller, Glen Walker, Helen Payton, Ralph Williamson, Troy Fuller, Bill Byers, Dan Clark, Boyce Byers, Chris Jones, Iva Nail, Robert Nail. Staff Present Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa Faiva-Siale, Projects & Events Ana Ahovelo, Building Attendant Visitors Mayor Pro Tern Linda Martin Council Member Leon Hogg Approval of Minutes Dan Clark made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Helen Lightbody seconded the motion, motion approved. Treasurer's Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported that two checks were written as reimbursements for materials purchased for restoration work on Willie Mae McCormick's scrapbooks. One check was for $211.69 and the other for $129.78. The Committee's new balance is now $8,685.63. Old Business 1. Docent report from July 8, August 12 and September 9: a. Iva &Robert Nail, Boyce & Bill Byers and Ana Ahovelo were docents on July 8. There were eight visitors to the Museum. b. Ana Ahovelo and Betty Fuller worked on August 12. Betty Fuller reported thirteen visitors for the day. c. Chris Jones, Troy Fuller and Ana Ahovelo worked on September 9. Twenty one people visited the Museum. Mr. Fuller mentioned that he especially EHPC Mtg. 091106 enjoyed visiting with Chris Jones during open house as there is seldom enough time to visit with each other during regular meeting times. Mr. Fuller further reported that the Museum needs to be dusted and vacuumed. He also expressed his appreciation that the open house signs are being put up for the Committee. He further asked if the signs could be posted out in the open. The sign he saw by Taco Bell was not visible from the street. 2. Helen Payton, Betty Fuller, Iva & Robert Nail and Ana Ahovelo will docent on October 14. 3. Bill Byers asked if the Museum signs on the north and west sides of the Fuller House could be repainted. The signs are faded and hard to see. 4. Boyce Byers reported that Mrs. McCormick's scrapbook project is going well. It was mentioned that gloves and face masks had to be purchased due to the chemicals used to remove clippings from the scrapbooks. Mrs. Byers further stated that the Library staff has been fantastic in their support and willingness to help from the beginning of the project. 5. Betty Fuller tape recorded Willie Mae McCormick's oral history. Ofa "Mary" is currently transcribing the recordings from this interview. Oral history recordings of Margie Massey, Willie Byers, Jennie Fuller Payton, Warren Fuller and Annie Florene Huffman Lees have also been completed. 6. Betty Fuller and Weldon Cannon have been working on the Historical Preservation Committee's scrapbooks. Mrs. Fuller reported that photos were donated to the Museum by Lynnelle Rea, daughter of Luther Morelock who used to own a business on the northwest corner of Hwy. 10 and Main Street. 7. City staff members were thanked for having developed 24 photo negatives that were recently a part of Gene Whitener's photo collection. No photos were found for these negatives so they were given to the Parks & Community Services staff to develop. Eight by ten photos along with the negatives were returned to Mrs. Fuller. 8. Ofa"Mary" is currently transcribing Willie Mae McCormick's oral history interview. 9. Dan Clark showed the Committee various places on the interne where information on Euless was found. He also displayed for the Committee's viewing the City of Euless website with the newly added oral interview of Margie Massey and Willie Byers. Committee members were appreciative of Mr. Clark's work. Mr. Clark noted that the City's web-master was very helpful to him in getting the documents uploaded. On another note, Mr. Clark added that he would like to have a narrative done on the Tongan Community and the "Indian" Community in the area. 10. A "thank you" card from Nell Hicks was passed around for the Committee's viewing. Mrs. Hicks thanked the members for their support and friendship over the years. She also thanked everyone for the group photo she received from the Committee. Additionally, she expressed her appreciation for the recognition she received from the Mayor for her service to the City over the years. EHPC Mtg. 091106 • 11. Weldon Cannon and Pattie Benoit also sent a "thank you" card for the condolence card she received on the passing of her mother. 12. It was mentioned that David and Veva Lou Massey were visiting "Tubby" Huffman in New Mexico and couldn't attend the meeting. 13. Bill Byers will be conducting the third quarterly program on the history of Euless on "Significant Businesses in Euless History". Mr. Byers' presentation will be on Thursday, October 12 at City Hall. 14. Dan Clark was asked to research the feasibility of the Committee's participation in a project to scan archival information for the University of North Texas' "Portal to Texas History"project. The archived information would be available for anyone interested in the study of Texas history. 15. Mrs. Fuller asked for volunteers to work the Committee's display tables during the Texas Genealogical Society's Annual Conference on October 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and October 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The conference will be held in the MacGolinan Conference Center at Southwest Baptist Seminary on 1701 W. Boyce Avenue, Fort Worth. It was further mentioned that lunch has to be ordered ahead of time at $7.50 per person. Mrs. Fuller indicated she may not be able to work the conference due to another engagement. Boyce Byers volunteered to work if Mrs. Fuller can not go. Suzanne Hendrickson indicated that City staff can help on this day. Various items were discussed as possible displays for the Committee's table. 16. Gary McKamie was asked for an update on the Historical room at the Library. Mr. McKamie reported that plans are in the upcoming budget for the expansion of the back part of the Library. A room for Historical studies and storage will be considered. 17. Bill Byers, Chairman of the Display Sub-Committee, will start working on the McCormick Barn display. Other members of the Display Committee are David Massey, Robert Nail and Chris Jones. Harvey Little also volunteered his services in this area. 18. Committee members were asked for their input on how to properly display the 1800's Faun Boyd cookbook. It was decided that the cookbook would be given to Suzanne Hendrickson to scan and to see about the best way to display it and then given to Bill Byers to display. 19. Mrs. Fuller has not received a schedule for the usual Elementary School tours to the Museum. She will check with the HEB-ISD again for the 2006-2007 tour schedule. 20. The Butter Mold was found inside one of the display cases at the Fuller House. It's now on display at the Library. 21. Mrs. Fuller reminded Mr. & Mrs. Nail, Mr. Byers and Mr. Fuller to return their proofs of the oral history docent's tape recordings to Suzanne for a final draft. Ana was asked to help Mrs. Fuller with a tape recording on the Himes Log House. EHPC Mtg. 091106 22. Iva Nail spoke with Evelyn Himes and Mrs. Himes expressed her regret that she wasn't feeling well enough to attend the meeting. Mrs. Nail further reported that Mrs. Himes' birthday is coming up on September 28. She will be 90 years old. 23. Ray McDonald reported on the foundation repair work to be done at the Fuller House. He recommended that work should not start until some time after December. He informed the Committee that all irrigation, plants, trees, etc. around the Museum has to be removed and/or transplanted elsewhere before work could be done to the building. With Heritage Park Christmas coming up, in addition to the amount of prep work required to the surrounding area, Ray felt this would be the best course. Suzanne also added that all items on the walls as well as items that are on easels inside the Fuller House will need to be laid flat prior to work starting. Committee members were agreeable to Ray's recommendation. 24. Gary McKamie reported on the security system for Heritage Park. This project was a part of the budget package for next year. The system that will be installed is an infa-red system that will go just inside the perimeter of the fence around McCormick Barn and the Himes Log House. 25. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. Informed the Committee that Lori De La Cruz will be helping with the Committee's brochure, logo and stationary projects. b. Gave a reminder about the Volunteer Banquet. c. Reported that the new open house signs for the Museum should be ready before the next meeting. Signs are metal blank frames. Signs could be inserted into the blank frame and posted as usual. 26. Suzanne Hendrickson also reported the following regarding the City historical marker program. a. It was recommended that Council approval would be required for each marker. b. Reported that an applicant for a City marker would fund his/her own application. There wouldn't be a monetary cost to the City or to the Committee. New Business 1. Committee members were asked for their opinion on holding all future Historical Committee meetings at City Hall. After several suggestions, Glenn Walker felt that the Committee should meet back at the Fuller House at least three times a year. The members were agreeable to Mr. Walker's suggestion and it was decided that they would meet back at the Fuller House in February, April and November. 2. Mrs. Fuller encouraged the Committee to recruit new and younger members to serve on the Committee. Boards and Commissions applications were passed out to various members. 3. The Committee further discussed the possibility of meeting during the day in order to be more accommodating to younger members. After further discussions about various options, Chris Jones was asked if he would come up with some ideas on how to generate new and younger members for the next meeting. Mr. Jones agreed to come up with some suggestions for the Committee. EHPC Mtg. 091106 4. Bill Byers encouraged members who are available to participate in the upcoming R&R program. The City will be hosting the R & R program during the week of September 18 to September 24. He described his experiences with the program. 5. Mrs. Fuller thanked everyone for their attendance and participation in the Historical Committee. City staff members were warmly thanked by those members present for their support and hard work not only pertaining to the Historical Committee but on behalf of the City of Euless as well.
