HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 9, 2006 Call to Order Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. Members Present Betty Fuller, Helen Payton, Bill Byers, Boyce Byers, David Massey, Ralph Williamson, Troy Fuller, Glenn Walker, Dan Clark, Helen Lightbody, Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Weldon Cannon, Michele Burger, Chris Jones. Staff Present Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Recreation Manager Ofa Faiva-Siale, Projects & Events Visitors Council Member Leon Hogg Norma Lively Doris Brown Approval of Minutes Troy Fuller made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Glenn Walker seconded the motion, motion approved. Treasurer's Report Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported that the Committee's current balance is $8,685.63. Old Business 1. Docent report: a. Robert and Iva Nail and Ana Ahovelo will docent on October 14. b. Helen Payton, Betty Fuller and Ana Ahovelo will docent on November 11. 2. Dan Clark and Chris Jones were asked if they would take the lead in the narrative project of the ethnic communities in Euless. Mr. Jones and Mr. Clark were agreeable to working on the project. Mrs. Fuller suggested that the first narrative be done on the Mosier Valley EHPC Mtg. 100906 community. Committee members were in favor of the project. The following names are lifelong residents of Mosier Valley or people who were instrumental in its history: a. Beatrice Green of 900 Westpark, Euless. Contact information was provided for Mr. Clark and Mr. Jones. b. Brother Austin, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church for 37 years, was suggested by Mrs. Nail as a good candidate for an interview. c. Ali Parker was also mentioned as a good source of information for the program. 3. The "Oral History Release Form" has been given to the Chair and the Committee. 4. David Massey spoke of his memorable visit last month with his uncle Tubby Huffman. Mr. Huffman is Mr. Massey's mom's brother and he resides in New Mexico. He was not only a fighter pilot during WWII but he was a council member and a school board member as well as having served in many aspects of community life. Mr. Massey spoke with much respect and admiration of his uncle. A discussion followed about obtaining a historical accounting from Mr. Huffman. Mr. Massey indicated that Mr. Huffman's daughter, Debbie, may be very interested in helping the Committee with a historical interview of Mr. Huffman. Mr. Massey will contact Debbie regarding the project. Mrs. Fuller will put together a list of questions for her to use. 5. Boyce Byers reported on the McCormick Scrapbook project. Additional dividers and books need to be purchased in order to complete the project. The improvements to the scrapbooks are already apparent and Mrs. Byers feels everyone will be pleased with it. 6. Mr. Byers was asked to give a"teaser" regarding his presentation on "Significant Businesses in Euless History". The program will be at City Hall on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Byers said he was ready. 7. The Display Sub-Committee will begin working on the McCormick Barn display now that the weather is cooling off a bit. 8. The Texas State Genealogical Society State Conference will be at the McGorman Conference Center at Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary. The schedule for the conference is as follow: a. Thursday, October 26, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.—setup. b. Friday, October 27, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. c. Saturday, October 28, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Suzanne Hendrickson, Ana Ahovelo and Betty Fuller will be available to setup on Thursday afternoon. Suzanne, Ana, Mrs. Fuller, Bill and Boyce Byers and Weldon Cannon will work on Friday. Ana Ahovelo, Betty Fuller, Weldon Cannon, Mr. and Mrs. Byers will also work on Saturday. Iva and Robert Nail may work one or both days as well. The model of the Himes Log House will be used as a part of the display. 9. Dan Clark was asked for a report on the "Portal to Texas History"project. Mr. Clark suggested that this project be tabled for now. The Chair agreed that this was a good idea. EHPC Mtg. 100906 10. Wilshire Elementary School will tour the Museum on Tuesday, December 12. There will be eighty 4`h grade students all together. The tour will be from noon to 2 p.m. Donna Park Elementary will be touring on Thursday, February 8 and there will be sixty-six students total. 11. Ray McDonald suggested at last month's meeting that foundation repair work to the Fuller House begin sometime in January 2007. There was concern that this would interfere with the upcoming school tours. It was clarified that the repair work will not interfere with the previously mentioned school tours. Ana Ahovelo will ensure that all items on the walls inside the Fuller House will be placed on the floor prior to work starting. 12. Suzanne Hendrickson was given the Faun Boyd cookbook to scan. The cookbook is in fragile shape. Mrs. Fuller suggested that a display frame be purchased for the cookbook to be placed in after Suzanne scans it. 13. Boyce Byers suggested that when the Historical Archive Room becomes available in the Library, hard copies of all oral history recordings be kept in the room. Dan Clark suggested that file drawers could be set aside for the hard copies. Mrs. Fuller asked "Mary"to make copies for her. 14. Suzanne Hendrickson reported on the following: a. Ofa is still transcribing Willie Mae McCoimick's interview. b. The brochure has gone through one round of corrections. After proofing is done it will be sent to the printer. c. Suzanne, Mary and Ana attended software training on the PastPerfect Museum software recently purchased by the City. Suzanne did a presentation showing samples of what the software could do by way of documentation, forms, reports, inventory, information and so forth. Several Committee members expressed their appreciation of everything the City does in support of preserving the history of the area. d. Gave a reminder about the following events: 1. Junior Angler Day on October 14, 9 a.m. to noon. 2. Community Garage Sale on October 14, 8 a.m. to noon. 3. Deryl Dodd Concert at Softball World also on October 14. 4. Halloween Thing on October 31, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 5. Open House at the Fire Station 6. Boards and Commissions Banquet on November 13, 6:30 p.m. 7. Parade of Lights on December 2, 6:30 p.m. 8. Heritage Park Christmas on December 9, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. New Business 1. It was reported that both Noluia Lively and Doris Brown turned in applications to serve on the Historical Preservation Committee. Suzanne Hendrickson was asked if she knew if anyone else turned in an application. It was reported that the staff would not know the status of other applications until after Council's approval. It was further mentioned that any new application/s would probably go before Council on the second meeting in October. EHPC Mtg. 100906 2. Mr. Nail asked that minutes and agendas be sent to Norma Lively and Doris Brown next month. Ofa "Mary" will send Mrs. Lively and Mrs. Brown minutes from today's meeting. 3. Craig Ward has resigned from the Committee due to scheduling conflict. His letter of resignation was passed around for the members viewing. 4. The 3rd Annual Tarrant County Historical Commission Summit will be on October 19, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cattle Raiser Museum on 1301 West 7th Street in Fort Worth. This is a free event to attend. The City of Euless donated one hundred bags with Euless on the outside plus one hundred packages of Bluebonnet seeds and one hundred recycled pens. The Chair thanked the City for the donations. 5. Mrs. Fuller reported that Thistle Hill tours will be conducted from October 14—29. Tickets are $15 if purchased before October 14 and $20 thereafter. The address is 1509 Pennsylvania Avenue, Fort Worth. 6. Bill Byers will be getting together with the Sheriff's Department who volunteered to maintain Calloway Cemetery. Mr. Byers reported that the grass is so overgrown at the cemetery that it actually looks pretty. Apparently there was a change in personnel which affected the maintenance of the property. 7. Suzanne Hendrickson is currently putting together the next issue of Euless Today. The Committee was asked for the next quarterly program topic and speaker. Troy Fuller suggested that Mrs. Fuller do the next program. Mr. Cannon along with some of the other members present agreed with Mr. Fuller. It was mentioned that the next program could be done on "Euless Schools" since Mrs. Fuller was a school teacher. 8. Troy Fuller saw a 5 minute piece on the news about the airport R& R program. 9. Weldon Cannon recently visited Coffee County and Bedford County in Tennessee. He attended each county's historical meetings. Mr. Cannon identified a tombstone made by his grandmother Cannon that he will now be able to replace. Additionally, Mr. Cannon was cleaning out some 50 to 60 years worth of stored "stuff' and found the following items: a. A 1952 article mentioning that "...Alderman, Ross Cannon replaced Troy Fuller..." b. A 1955 or 1956 article about "...Mayor Jimmy Payton of Euless..." c. There was also a 1958 or 1959 article about Mayor Ernest Millican Jr. 10. David Massey inquired if anyone knew that Quanah Parker has descendents residing in the area. He mentioned that one of them owns Parker Irrigation. A brief discussion was held regarding this important piece of information. 11. Ralph Williamson apologized that he was unable to participate in the R & R program last month. He had implants done on his eye and further reported that he can see better now. 12. Mr. Byers reported that the R & R program went very well. The City did a great job coordinating the program. He further mentioned that it got a little emotional at times as EHPC Mtg. 100906 some of the soldiers had tears in their eyes. Three members of the Rocketts visited one day and Mrs. Byers had her picture taken with them. Mr. and Mrs. Byers were able to attend everyday of the program. 13. Council Member Leon Hogg asked the members to "be patient" with the Library expansion project and the Historical room the Committee previously requested. Council will be voting on a facility plan that will include the expansion of the Library. 14. Helen Lightbody indicated her interest in attending some of the summits, conferences, etc. often mentioned at the meetings. Regrettably Mrs. Lightbody is unable to drive herself to and from many of the functions. Mrs. Fuller offered to pick up Mrs. Lightbody for the upcoming Tarrant County Historical Commission Summit on October 19. 15. Mrs. Fuller thanked the City staff for their support. She also thanked the Committee for their dedication. She further reminded the Committee that the next meeting will be at the Fuller House on November 13 at 10 a.m. The Christmas tree will be decorated after the meeting.
