HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-04-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes April 9, 2007 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. The meeting was held at the Fuller House Museum, 203 Cullum Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Michele Burger, Helen Payton, Robert Nail, Weldon Cannon, Shirley Mercer, Doris Brown, Betty Fuller, Boyce Byers, Sue Stover, Veva Lou Massey, David Massey, Dan Clark, Bill Byers, Thomas Stover, Chris Jones, Troy Fuller, Helen Lightbody, Iva Nail, Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tem Linda Martin Council Member Leon Hogg STAFF PRESENT Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services Ana Ahovelo, Building Attendant Michael Davenport, Special Events/Projects Supervisor Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bill Byers made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Michele Burger seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of$9,049.88. RECOGNITION OF NEW MEMBER Betty Fuller welcomed Mrs. Sue Stover on behalf of the Committee. Mrs. Stover said a few words of introduction. She is very glad to be a member of the Committee. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. "Red Folders"—Committee members were reminded to turn these in as soon as possible so the Museum inventory can be updated. EHPC Mtg. 040907 2. It was mentioned at last months meeting that perhaps a plaque could be made to honor deceased Committee members. Willie Mae McCormick and Don Tharp's names were mentioned. Mrs. Fuller will check with Susan Crim on other names of deceased Committee members. 3. Doris Brown reported on her recent visit to Euless elementary schools to generate more interest in Heritage Park tours. She spoke with various schools and passed out brochures. 4. The alarm pad inside the Fuller House deactivates the alarm for both inside the Fuller House and the outside perimeter of the property. Another alarm pad is located outside on the south side of the building for the maintenance crew to use so they do not have to enter the house to deactivate the system. 5. A list of those who volunteered to work the Committee's Arbor Daze table was read off and confirmed by the members. Those that volunteered are Betty Fuller, Thomas Stover, Chris Jones,Norma Lively, Iva and Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Billy Byers, Weldon Cannon, Dan Clark, Ralph Williamson and David and Veva Lou Massey. It was reported by staff that parking will be available at First Baptist Church and shuttles will run to and from the parking lot to the Arbor Daze site on a regular basis. 6. Mr. Byers reported that Helen and Glenn Gleghorn's application hadn't been turned in to the City Secretary's office. Mr. and Mrs. Byers will follow up with the Gleghorn's regarding their application. 7. Mrs. Fuller thanked Donna Mickan for donating a copy of an original Morrisdale Estate brochure. 8. Ana Ahovelo found the missing skein of cotton rope upstairs in the Himes Log House. 9. Mr. and Mrs. Gathings and Thomas Stover are still working on the Tongan Community oral history project. 10. A couple of Committee members inquired about the progress on the Historical Archive room in the Library. Council Member Leon Hogg and Mayor Pro Tem Linda Martin agreed that consideration is ongoing regarding the overall expansion project of the Library. It was further added that Council is very much aware of the Committee's desires for an archive room in the Library. 11. Mrs. Fuller thanked the staff for installing the new Fuller House, Himes Log House and McCormick Barn signs. MCCORMICK BARN UPDATE 1. Mr. Byers was contacted about the placement of the new McCormick Barn sign and staff installed the sign accordingly. 2. Mr. Byers and Mr. Little have been working on the display of farm equipments in the barn. EHPC Mtg. 040907 3. Signage for the outdoor farm equipment is being collaborated between Mr. Byers and City staff. HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE 1. A discussion was held regarding regulating the temperature in the Himes Log House. The Committee did agree that nothing should be done to the house that would change and/or impair the historical integrity of the house. After several suggestions by various Committee members, it was mentioned that it may be best to keep using the blower system that Mr. Byers has been using for the past several years. 2. The recording of the Log House presentation is still being worked on for the docent packet. FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. The City will look into interior repair work to the house in the near future. STAFF REPORT 1. Michael Davenport reported on the upcoming Texas Trash Off and Arbor Daze events. 2. Mary Ofa reported that the Faun Boyd cookbook is in the process of being digitized. It will be completed around the first of May. COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Calloway Cemetery: a. It was scheduled that the survey of Calloway would begin on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 10 a.m. April 30, 2007 was also noted as a back up date in case work could not begin on April 13. City staff was asked to help develop a short census form and make five hundred copies for the Committee to use as they conduct the survey. The following people will be working on the census: Bill Byers, Troy Fuller, Weldon Cannon, James Gathings, Veva Lou Massey, David Massey, Tom Stover, Iva Nail, Robert Nail,Norma Lively and Betty Fuller. 2. Willie Mae McCormick's scrapbooks will be displayed in a specially built cabinet in the Reference area in the Library. 3. Mrs. Fuller informed Mr. Nail that she will need to purchase several binders for old photographs she has. The photos will also need to be scanned and Mrs. Fuller asked if staff could type captions for each photo. 4. Mrs. Fuller asked about the Historical Committee's logo project. Staff reported at last month's meeting that the logo project was completed by Suzanne Hendrickson. Mrs. Fuller asked if the logo could be cast and put on the Committee's markers. Mr. Clark asked that the logo be emailed to him. Staff will email Mr. Clark the logo. CONSIDERATION OF FUTURE PROJECTS EHPC Mtg. 040907 1. Tom Stover offered to donate old wooden planes to the Museum. Mr. Byers agreed to accept some of Mr. Stover's planes for display in the barn. 2. Committee members were encouraged to attend the Park Board meeting on May 7, 2007 at 7 p.m. Mr. Harvey Little will be named volunteer of the month. Mr. Byers encouraged everyone to attend the meeting if possible. Members were informed that Mr. Little doesn't know about the occasion. ENLISTMENT OF DOCENTS 1. Helen Payton and Dan Clark volunteered to docent on May 12, 2007. ADJOURNMENT Chris Jones made a motion for the meeting to adjourn at 11:35 a.m. Helen Payton seconded the motion, all were in favor, motion approved.
