HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-05-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 14, 2007 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Betty Fuller, Donna Mickan, Helen Lightbody, Sue Stover, Tom Stover, Doris Brown, Helen Payton, Robert Nail, Iva Nail, Dan Clark, Weldon Cannon, Boyce Byers, Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tern Linda Martin STAFF PRESENT Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager Ray McDonald, Director of Parks & Community Services Ana Ahovelo, Building Attendant Michael Davenport, Special Events/Projects Supervisor Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ofa"Mary" Faiva-Siale noted a correction on the minutes under Docent Reports; Helen Lightbody was docent on Saturday, May 12, 2007 and not Helen Payton. Helen Payton made a motion for the minutes to be approved. Doris Brown seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of$9,049.88. DOCENT'S REPORT Dan Clark and Helen Lightbody reported fourteen visitors during open house on May 12, 2007. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Inventory "Red Folders": two folders were turned in to the staff. Committee members were reminded to turn in their folders if they were given one. EHPC Mtg. 051407 2. Memorial Plaque: Helen Payton is working on a "book"with a list of previous Committee members and the years they served on the Committee. Weldon Cannon expressed the importance and his support for the project. It was mentioned that it could be kept at the Fuller House Museum. Mrs. Fuller asked Helen Payton and Robert Nail to be in charge of the memorial project. 3. Arbor Daze: Committee members expressed their appreciation to the staff for the support they received during the event with parking passes, table set up, slide show, etc. On behalf of the Committee, Mrs. Fuller thanked Tom Stover, Chris Jones, Norma Lively, Iva and Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Bill Byers, Dan Clark, David and Veva Lou Massey and Weldon Cannon for working the historical table during the event. Mrs. Fuller also worked the event. 4. New Membership: Mrs. Byers will work with the Gleghorn's regarding their Committee membership application. 5. Calloway Cemetery Census Project: Mrs. Byers informed the Committee that the County hasn't been able to maintain the cemetery as was first agreed. She also indicated that Mr. Byers will see about improvements on the maintenance of the property. Mrs. Fuller mentioned that Mr. Cannon has been to the property conducting a preliminary survey in preparation for the Committee's census project. Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, James and Beth Gathings, Troy Fuller, Iva and Robert Nail, Veva Lou and David Massey, Tom Stover, Norma Lively and Betty Fuller previously volunteered to work on the project. Sue Stover and Donna Mickan also volunteered to help. Staff was thanked for making up the census forms used for the survey. Additional forms were requested and staff will have some made up for the Committee. Volunteers started the survey on Monday, April 30, 2007. Volunteers for the project will meet again on Monday, May 21, 2007 at 8 a.m. to continue working on the project. 6. Oral History Project: Eli Ofa and Halatono Naeata's interviews have been recorded and submitted to staff for transcription. Mr. Stover will conduct Reverend Haisila's interview on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 5 p.m. It was further mentioned that release forms haven't been completed for Mr. Ofa and Mrs. Naeata's oral history interviews. Staff will have a release form for Reverend Haisila to sign. 7. Mrs. Fuller will purchase photo books for the photo project and give Mr. Nail the receipts for the purchase. 8. Internet Posting: It was reported that Weldon Cannon has quite a bit of interviews he has collected over the years. He inquired whether these would need release forms signed prior to their being posted on line. A meeting between the Recreation staff, City Manager and IS staff is scheduled later in the week to discuss the PastPerfect software previously discussed by the Committee. 9. A brief discussion was held regarding the parking lot signs at Heritage Park. Ray McDonald will look into having signs made for the park. EHPC Mtg. 051407 10. It was reported that the door for the Himes Log House is difficult to open. Staff will turn in a work order to have the door looked at. 11. Iva Nail, Robert Nail, Weldon Cannon, Bill Byers, Boyce Byers and Betty Fuller attended the Park Board meeting on Monday, May 7, 2007 for the presentation of the "Volunteer of the Month" award to Mr. Harvey Little. Everyone was thanked for their support and attendance. Mr. Little was appreciative of the gesture. 12. The Faun Boyd Cookbook has been digitized and placed in the display case purchased by Helen Payton. The original book and a hard copy will be placed at the Fuller House. Mrs. Fuller thanked the staff for getting the project completed. It was suggested that it could be advertised in Euless Today that the book is available. Mrs. Fuller obtained the book from Jean Whitener. MCCORMICK BARN UPDATE 1. Various Committee members mentioned that Mr. Byers has done a great job with the garden and it really looks good. 2. Mr. Byers and City staff members are currently working on signage and display of outdoor farm implements. HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE 1. Mrs. Fuller is still working on the recording for the Himes Log House. FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. Repair work will begin in the near future on the interior of the Museum. The current wall paper will have to be replaced. Staff provided wall paper samples for the Committee's selection. COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Boyce Byers thanked the staff for providing the slide show for Arbor Daze. Mrs. Byers further expressed her appreciation for those who attended Harvey Little's award presentation. 2. Weldon Cannon indicated his appreciation for everything the City provides its citizens. He mentioned the difference between the cities of Euless and Temple, Texas. Mr. Cannon still considers Euless home. 3. Betty Fuller thanked the staff for all their support with the cookbook, Arbor Daze and numerous other projects. 4. Helen Lightbody asked if ant spray could be kept at the Fuller House. She mentioned that there were ants at the property during the last open house. Mrs. Lightbody further inquired whether the computer at the Fuller House still works. After a brief discussion, it was mentioned that staff will follow up on the condition of the computer. EHPC Mtg. 051407 5. Weldon Cannon displayed a 1953 Euless High School Cardinal yearbook he found on E- Bay. Mr. Cannon encouraged the Committee to keep an eye out for such items of interest. STAFF REPORT 1. Ray McDonald expressed his appreciation for what the Committee does on behalf of the City of Euless. He recognized the importance of the Recreation Department's support to the work the Committee does. 2. Staff reported that translation work has begun on the Tubby Huffman recording. CONSIDERATION OF FUTURE PROJECTS 1. Weldon Cannon and Betty Fuller will meet with staff regarding the local marker program. It was reported that the project will need to be presented to Council for approval as the program requires various historical ordinances. ENLISTMENT OF DOCENTS 1. Sue and Tom Stover are tentatively scheduled to docent on June 9, 2007. ADJOURNMENT Weldon Cannon made a motion for the meeting to adjourn at 11:44 a.m. Tom Stover seconded the motion, all were in favor, motion approved.
