HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-09-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes September 10, 2007 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive, Euless, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT Helen Payton, Doris Brown, Troy Fuller, Betty Fuller, Bill Byers, Boyce Byers, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Robert Nail, Iva Nail, Weldon Cannon, James Gathings, Beth Gathings, Donna Mickan, Sue Stover,Norma Lively. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Council Member Linda Martin Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg Helen Gleghorn STAFF PRESENT Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager Ray McDonald, Director of Parks and Community Services Michael Davenport, Special Events/Projects Supervisor Jason Hedger, Recreation Intern Ofa"Mary"Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES Iva Nail made a motion for the minutes to be approved. James Gathings seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of$8,885.84. It was reported that a $100 gift certificate was purchased for Suzanne Hendrickson's going away gift and $64.04 were for miscellaneous supplies used for the Committee's historical display at the Library. Library Display: Mrs. Fuller reported that a list of the items displayed in the historical display case at the Library has been turned in to City staff. One display section will have a Santa display, another has the artifacts from Fuller House and the third has Mrs. McCormick's Scrapbooks. Mrs. Byers inquired if the items displayed at the Library are secured. Mrs. Fuller explained that the cases are locked and secured. It was mentioned that a Display Committee would be good to monitor change out of the Library display. 2. New Donations: a. Bill Byers informed the Committee that a windmill was offered resulting from some work he did and asked for the Committee's thoughts on accepting the donation. The Committee agreed to accept the donation. It was further discussed that funds are needed to move the windmill to Heritage Park. Troy Fuller made a motion to authorize the Committee's Treasurer, Robert Nail, to make available the funds required to pay for relocating the windmill. Iva Nail seconded the motion, all were in favor, motion approved. Mr. Byers will get estimates on the cost and get with Mr. Nail regarding payment. b. John Fitch donated an old oil can. 3. New Membership: It was reported that Gary Fieldson is interested in becoming a member. 4. Oral History: Staff has turned in transcribed material for the Mosier Valley oral history project to Dan Clark. This included Beatrice Green and Reverend George Austin's interviews. Staff reported that Tubby Huffman's interview is half way done. 5. Calloway Cemetery: the following was discussed regarding the cemetery: a. On behalf of the Committee, Mrs. Fuller thanked everyone again who worked on the census including Mr. Byers' neighbor, David Brown. b. Mr. Byers reported that three new burials have occurred since the census was taken. c. Mr. Byers further reported that the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department has not been maintaining the property properly over the past several months. The City was able to go out and mow the property and he reported that the property looked pristine and well kept. He thanked the City for helping out. d. Mr. Byers also mentioned the possibility of someone doing some work pertaining to the cemetery as a part of an Eagle Scout project. He will follow up on the possibility. e. Mr. Byers brought up the fact that in order to maintain tax exempt status on Calloway Cemetery, reports have to be filed, a Board has to be set up as well as various other requirements that have not yet been met. f. Volunteers were recruited to help organize census data previously collected by the Committee. Mrs. Fuller mentioned the need to cross reference data collected by the Committee with previous censuses compiled by other groups over the years. The book called the Cemeteries of North East Tarrant County could also be used as a reference. Beth and James Gathings, Weldon Cannon, Iva Nail, Helen Payton, Mrs. Fuller and Bill Byers volunteered to work on the project. EHPC Mtg. 091007 6. Photo Project: Mrs. Fuller asked for volunteers to organize and put together hundreds of photos belonging to the Museum into binders. Sue Stover, Donna Mickan, Boyce Byers, Bill Byers, Helen Payton and Doris Brown volunteered to work on the project. 7. Internet Posting: Work is in progress pertaining to the Committee's website. 8. Signage Project: The Committee was informed that once it has the descriptions for the different farm implements at Heritage Park done, staff will have the signs made up and installed. It was indicated that Mr. Byers will lead the project and give the staff the wording for the display signs. 9. Upcoming Summit: Staff will set up and help the Committee with a display table on October 25, 2007 in Weatherford, Texas. 10. Local Marker Program: Staff expressed the need for direction on details pertaining to the local marker request. The Committee discussed what avenues are required in order to proceed with obtaining rights to run a local marker program for Euless. Bill Byers made a motion for the staff to approach Council with a formal presentation for the City of Euless to have a local marker program. Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. Staff will make a formal presentation of the Committee's request at Pre- Council on Tuesday, September 25, 2007. MCCORMICK BARN UPDATE 1. Mr. Byers expressed his desire to have a working well at Heritage Park. Various Committee members were agreeable to the idea but had questions about the process. A short discussion followed regarding the requirements to having a well as well as the depth required in order to hit water. Further research will be made regarding the idea. HIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE FULLER HOUSE UPDATE COMMITTEE REPORT 1. On behalf of the Committee, Mrs. Fuller spoke and/or reported on the following: a. Thanked staff for having holes drilled on the Fuller House sign for the "open" sign. b. Complimentary and appreciative of the new Post Oak benches at Heritage Park. c. Thankful for all the staff's support to the Committee and its endeavors. d. Thanked the City for repair work, new wall paper, new paint job, etc. done at Fuller House. e. Dan Clark could not make today's meeting due to his flight being canceled. f. Mrs. Fuller and the Committee were very complimentary of Michael Davenport's efforts in increasing advertising of the Historical Committee's projects as wa11 as starting the "feat red organizatio�" t for Heritage Park r ., - __'a the - .. ... a.. project �„r�ler��age 1 aril tours. EHPC Mtg. 091007 2. Mr. Cannon expressed his and his wife, Pattie Benoit's, appreciation for the condolence card received from the Committee on the passing of Pattie's father. 3. Mrs. Fuller reported that she, Doris Brown and Donna Mickan have a meeting at Old Bedford School to discuss elementary school tours for the next school year. 4. It was brought up that a Mr. Sean Connor asked for a photo of the old Euless theatre. This brought up a discussion about collecting additional photos for the Museum' photo project. The staff will include an ad in the next issue of Euless Today and the City website asking for photos from the public. 5. Troy Fuller asked if copies of Euless Today can be mailed to him. Staff will mail Mr. Fuller copies of the magazine as they become available. 6. Arcadia Publisher's is a company that publishes books on notable locations or landmarks of different cities. They have offered to do a book on Euless which will include photos and facts about the City. There would not be a charge for their services; however, they would have the right to sell the book in the area. A discussion followed on whether the Committee was interested in participating in the project. Key Committee members expressed concerns about various aspects of the book and the Committee voted not to participate in the project. 7. Weldon Cannon displayed a commemorative plate of the old First United Methodist Church of Euless that he bought off eBay. He encouraged everyone to keep an eye out for historical treasures such as these and pick them up for the Museum. VISITOR REPORT 1. Council Member Linda Martin considers this her favorite meeting of the month. 2. Mayor Pro Tem Leon Hogg is always glad to be at the historical meeting. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff distributed folders containing, donation forms, loan forms, oral history release forms, board and commission application forms, etc. for the Committee to keep and utilize when needed. 2. Staff passed out copies of the Appointments to Board/Commission page from the Boards and Commissions handbook and asked the Committee to send all address changes, resignation letters, etc. to the City Secretary, Susan Crim. 3. Staff reported that North Euless Baptist is the "featured organization" to tour Heritage Park on October 13, 2007. d. Staff will remove hold .,Crp uµter from th e Fuller House requested instruction on what the Committee would like to do with it. Since Mrs. McCormick donated the computer, staff was instructed to contact Elizabeth Wilcox, Mrs. McCormick's daughter, to see what she would like to do with the computer. EHPC Mtg. 091007 5. Members were reminded of the WFAA Good Morning Texas live in studio interview of Weldon Cannon and Betty Fuller on September 18, 2007. ENLISTMENT OF DOCENTS 1. Mr. &Mrs. Nail volunteered to docent on October 13, 2007. A staff member will be on site to help with the tours.
