HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-02-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 11,2008 CALL TO ORDER Chair, Betty Fuller, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at City Hall in the Pre-Council Chamber at 201 North Ector Drive,Euless,Texas. PRESENT Glenn Walker, Troy Fuller,Helen Gleghom,Helen Lightbody,Ralph Williamson, Thomas Stover, Sue Stover,Michele Burger,David Brown,Weldon Cannon, David Massey, Gary Fieldsend,Doris Brown, Dan Clark,Betty Fuller,Donna Mickan, Robert Nail,Helen Payton,Bill Byers, Boyce Byers, James Gathings, Iva Nail,Beth Gathings, Joe Cannon. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS Mayor Pro Tern Leon Hogg Sandra Crowley,President of the Euless Library Foundation STAFF PRESENT Michael Davenport, Special Events/Projects Supervisor Ofa"Mary"Faiva-Siale, Projects Coordinator Kate Lyon, Library Administrator APPROVAL OF MINUTES The following corrections were made to the January Minutes: a. Under Status of Current Projects, item ld, it should Mrs.Mr. Clark l er, will speak with Kate Lyon about having a display at the Library instead b. Three corrections were made under Committee Reports: • Item 6a should say that the shrubberies came from Arch C Cannon's nursery nursery (original owner) instead of Ross Cannon's nursery. was called The Euless Nursery. Also under the same item, Joe Cannon is one of Arch Cannon's grandchildren,not Billy Byers. • Item 6b should say the marker will go on the original location of Arch and Ross Cannon's Nursery(Ross Cannon's name was later added to the business name) instead of just Ross Cannon's nursery. • Item 6c should say,The Euless School instead of Euless High School. Weldon Cannon made a motion for the minutes to be approved with the corrections. Donna Mickan seconded the motion,motion approved. EIiPC Mtg. 021108 TREASURER'S REPORTS Treasurer, Robert Nail, reported a balance of$7,385.84. Fifty three dollars was collected for the Mary Ann Trigg tile last month. DOCENT'S REPORT/RECRUITMENT 1. Iva and Robert Nail,David Brown,Betty Fuller and Weldon Cannon were docents on February 9, 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Nail's daughter, Linda Poole, also helped that day. There were fourteen visitors. 2. Mrs. Nail appreciated David Brown helping with the tours on February 9, 2008. She explained that he was very helpful and eager to learn and was glad for the opportunity to work with him. 3. Details were provided by Mrs. Fuller on the two upcoming elementary school tours on February 12 and February 19. 4. Norma Lively, Iva Nail, Donna Mickan, Fuller and Bill Byers volunteered to work �an,2008. the Spring Garden tour on February 5. The following volunteered to docent on March 8, 2008; Gary Fieldsend,David Brown, Donna Mickan and Norma Lively. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Library History Wall: Kate Lyon and Sandra Crowley updated the Committee on the progress of the project. The Himes Log House tile has been completed and it was displayed for the Committee's viewing. Members were very impressed with the finished tile. The Foundation provided a sample brochure with prices, sizes and types of tiles to go on the mural. 2. Volunteer Recruitment: Donna Mickan spoke with Jamie Pringle from for Trinity Committee.gh School about the possibility of having some of her drama Ms. Pringle was very agreeable to the proposal and is very interested in having her students participate in the project. This could be a way for them to earn extra credits. Mrs. Mickan suggested to Ms. Pringle that students first the work it the Committee during regular house to observe and bec ome familiar with 3. Photo Scanning Project: Dan Clark reported that two staff members have been trained on the scanning process. Currently they are scanning the "Founding Families" album. The Committee will provide another album once this album is done. 4. Calloway Cemetery: Bill Byers reported that Larry Cook, a staff member from Softball World,has volunteered to help with the maintenance of the cemetery. Photo Album Project: Dan Clark displayed an enlarged photo berap displayed four Euless of children for the Committee's viewing. The photograph p the Euless Library along with a description card. 6. Oral History Project: Dan Clark reported that Henry"Tubby"Huffman's recording has been posted on the City website. There are a total lo f Committee histories wercurrently very posted on the website through Mr. Clark's efforts. The appreciative of Mr. Clark's dedication and commitment to all the projects he's been in charge of. MCCORMICK BARN / OUTDOOR UPDATE RIMES LOG HOUSE UPDATE FULLER HOUSE UPDATE 1. Various displays and artifacts in the Fuller House were re-arranged during oopen n house on Saturday, February 9, 2008 per the Committee's approval at the January g. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Mrs. Fuller expressed her appreciation to the City for having the lights fixed at Heritage Park. 2. Mrs. Fuller asked that the"historical calendar" suggestion from last month's meeting be put on the back burner for now until a more convenient time. 3. Gave a reminder that work on the previously collected Calloway Cemetery censuses is on hold at present until a more convenient time. 4. Reminded the Committee that work on the historical album will not begin until closer to the completion of the Calloway Cemetery"census project". COMMITTEE REPORTS 1. Donna Mickan reported that she will be running for Place 4 on City Council. Committee members were pleased for Mrs. Mickan and wished her well. 2. Weldon Cannon reported that the "commercial horticulture"historical marker application he submitted to Austin has been approved. There's still a process to follow before everything is finalized. Staff will look into advertising for the dedication ceremony. Furthermore, the finished marker will be received by the City pending Mr. Cannon's further instructions. 3. Joe Cannon brought various items and photographs to be scanned for the photo project. 4. Bill Byers reported that the expansion project has started at the Library. EHPC Mtg.021108 .jai.,.. • VISITORS REPORT 1. Mayor Pro Tem Leon Hogg mentioned city elections will be held on Saturday, May 10 and the three places are: Mayor,Place 2 and place 4. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff reported on the following: a. The dates and times of upcoming events, including the R&R program during the week of February 11 to February 17 and Arbor Daze on April 26 and April 27. b. A grad-student from the University of Texas, Arlington, is in the process of being hired to help with various Committee projects. c. All new members have been given their name tags. Shirt sizes are still needed for some new members. d. Had enlarged photographs of the moving of the Himes Log House,Fuller House and the McCormick Barn mounted for the Committee. All three photographs will be on display at the Fuller House. e. Two photographs; one of the four Euless children and one of Arch and Della Cannon were enlarged and mounted for the Committee. f. A new display case was purchased for the Faun Boyd Cookbook. The cookbook will be on display at the Fuller House. g. The following oral history recordings have been transcribed by staff and given to the Committee: Margie Neely Massey, Willie Huffman Byers,Beatrice Parker Green,Reverend Lloyd G. Austin, Annie Florin "Tookie"Huffman Lees, Willie Mae McCormick, Henry"Tubby"Huffman and Jenny Virginia Fuller Payton. The following will be transcribed in the future: Tongan Community(Halatono Naeata, Reverend Sione Haisila and Ilaiasi `Ofa), and Riley Warren Fuller. h. The Himes Log House and Fuller House are now being cleaned by staff once a month. If the Committee has additional requests regarding the cleaning of the facilities, they may inform the staff. i. The disclaimer for the oral history postings has been submitted to Dan Clark and it is now posted on the City website. j. The blades on the new windmill at Heritage Park had to be tied down due to being too noisy. ADJOURNMENT Ralph Williamson made a motion for the meeting to adjourn. Michele Burger seconded the motion.
