STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS
1. Arbor Daze:
• Mrs. Fuller thanked David Brown, Dan Clark and Gary Fieldsend for their outstanding
work on the Historical Committee's display table.
• David Brown thanked the City staff, Dan Clark and Gary Fieldsend for their help in
getting everything together for the table.
• The following people worked the Arbor Daze booth: Norma Lively, Iva Nail, Betty
Fuller, Robert Nail, Helen Payton, Joe Cannon, James and Beth Gathings, Dan Clark,
David Brown and Weldon Cannon. On behalf of the Committee, Mrs. Fuller thanked
everyone who worked. The members who worked reported that a steady stream of
people came through the booth and at times it was over crowed; many people played
games and won prizes.
• Iva Nail thought it was great that some people just wanted to find out answers to their
historical questions and not really cared about winning prizes.
• Mrs. Fuller, Dan Clark and others felt that the location of the Committee's table was a
little bit too crowded and asked for a bigger area and possibly a different location next
year. In general, the Committee felt that there was so much activity at the booth that it
might have interfered with the surrounding booths.
• Dan Clark thanked David and Christy Brown for coming up with the ideas for the booth
and for all the work they put in to the set up and manning of the table.
• David Brown reported that S348.78 worth of prizes was given away at the event. The
rest of the prizes were returned to Rebecca's for a refund.
• Mrs. Fuller sent Donna Mickan home during the event because she was ill.
• Michael Davenport thanked the Committee for all the hard work they put in to making
the booth so successful.
• Ralph Williamson contacted staff that he could not volunteer for Arbor Daze due to
recent eye surgery.

2. Library History Wall: This is an ongoing project and everything is moving along. Maw
Wright is interested in buying the Trigg tile. It was reported to her that the Committee has
an ongoing collection to help pay for the tile. Mrs. Fuller also mentioned that a preliminary
design with a wagon has been considered for the tile, Mrs. Wright was agreeable to the
current design.
3. Calloway Cemetery:
• David Massey reported that fifty-four names are currently on the contact list. The
following people were given contact cards to fill out: Bill Byers, Helen Gleghorn, Joe
Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Troy Fuller, David Massey, Iva Nail, Helen Payton and Betty
Fuller.
• Donna Mickan mentioned that she attended a friend's burial years ago at Calloway
Cemetery. She indicated that there wasn't a marker at the site and inquired how it could
be determined where the plot is today. This brought up a discussion about more recent
burials and whether they've been recorded properly. In the course of the discussion
there was a reminder that Mr. Cannon as well as the Sub-Committee has dedicated a lot
of hours and effort to try and rectify this particular situation. In the future, it is hoped
that every grave can be marked, identified and properly recorded.
• The Sub-Committee will meet on Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Parks and Community
Services building at 10 a.m. to continue working on the surveys. Weldon Cannon has
put a lot of effort into completing a rough map of the cemetery to help the organizing
process. Bill Byers, David and Veva Lou Massey, Iva Nail, Helen Gleghorn, Beth and
James Gathings, Weldon Cannon and Betty Fuller are members of the Sub-Committee.
4. Oral History Project/Website Update: Staff gave a print out of the historical description on
the City's website to Mr. Cannon to proof for historical accuracy. The oral history project
is ongoing and is being worked on by staff as time allows.
5. Library Display: A photograph of the E-Z-Way Mkt. is the display for May. Mr. Clark
requested additional information for the display narrative.

Fieldsend are members of this Sub-Committee.
7. Photo Album Project: The Sub-Committee will meet at the Fuller House on Tuesday, July
15, 2008 at 10 a.m. to continue organizing the photo albums. Doris Brown, Helen

on the albums.

the history of Arbor Daze.
9. Photo Scanning Project: The "Founding Families" album has been scanned and was
returned to the Committee. In addition, three folders containing copies of everything that
was scanned from the album were given to the Committee. Staff asked the Committee to
proof the copies for accuracy. Some copies may have inaccurate and/or insufficient
descriptions.

10. Local Marker Project:
• Weldon Cannon discussed a possible marker design he saw in a newspaper article. He
indicated a few ideas to personalize the design for the City of Euless marker.
Committee members were agreeable to Mr. Cannon's idea.
• Mr. Cannon further reported that corrections had to be made to the wording on the
Horticulture marker. The changes were sent back to Austin for updating and when that
process is done, the final draft will be sent to the foundry.
MCCORMICK BARN / OUTDOOR UPDATE
1. Robert Nail expressed his interest in having a working Well at Heritage Park. He inquired
as to how difficult it would be to have one made for demonstration purposes during tours.

FULLER HOUSE UPDATE
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
1. Mrs. Fuller will be out of the country in June and cannot work open house nor attend the
regular Committee meeting. Vice Chair, Donna Mickan will chair the June 9, 2008
historical meeting.
2. Betty Fuller asked for the Committee's opinion on acquiring Blackie Sustaire's first desk.
Blackie Sustaire was the City's first Police Chief and was later City Manager. The desk is
currently in Oklahoma and some members expressed concern about how to acquire the
desk, also about where to place the desk when and if it should be acquired. Mrs. Fuller
mentioned that a friend of the donor periodically visits the area and could bring the desk
down on one of his visits. Robert Nail expressed his interest in acquiring the desk for its
historical value to Euless. Donna Mickan offered to check with Police Chief Mike Brown,
if there was an interest in displaying the desk at the Police Station.
3. Mrs. Fuller inquired if Jean Whitener's name has been removed from the Committee's
contact list. Staff reported it has. She also reported that Evelyn Himes has been in the
hospital. The Committee members wish Mrs. Himes well.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
1. David Massey reported that Veva Lou wasn't feeling well and couldn't attend the meeting.
2. Dan Clark suggested that copies of the Faun Boyd Cookbook could be burned to CD's and
given away as a way of promoting the history of the area. Mr. Clark felt that with all the
work that went in to digitizing the book, it would be a shame not to share it with the public.
EHPC Mtg. 051208
3. Weldon Cannon showed the Committee an article from the Dallas Morning News titled
"Pieces of Texas _Missing." The article was about historical markers that are being stolen
for the metal and its monetary value.
4. Weldon Cannon is still working on the Euless historical timeline and will give copies to
interested members when he is done.
5. Michele Burger congratulated Donna Mickan on her election to the City Council.
Committee members also gave their congratulations and well wishes to Mrs. Mickan.
6. Beth Gathings felt that the Arbor Daze booth was a great success and thought people really
enjoyed the spinning wheel.
7. Weldon Cannon is a member of the Bear Creek Cemetery Association and he recently
attended their annual meeting on May 10, 2008. Mr. Cannon reported that the officers of
the Association would like to approach the Euless City Council about changing the name of
Minter's Chapel Road to Bear Creek Cemetery Road. The road they are talking about is a
two block strip that runs into the cemetery from Highway 360. Mr. Cannon asked for the
Committee's consideration of the request and for further discussion at the June 9, 2008
Historical Preservation Committee meeting. If the cemetery officers want the Historical
Preservation Committee to officially consider this request and possibly endorse it, they will
send a written request to Mr. Cannon who will present it to the Committee for formal
consideration.
8. Helen Lightbody and others in the Committee inquired about Boyce Byers well being. The
Committee misses Mrs. Byers presence and wishes her well.
VISITORS REPORT
1. Mavy Nell Trigg Wright:
• Mrs. Wright was introduced to members who hadn't had a chance to meet her.
• She turned in her application to join the Historical Preservation Committee. Staff will
submit the form to the City Secretary's office.
• Mrs. Wright toured Heritage Park during open house on Saturday, May 10, 2008. She
suggested that all the items at the Museum, including photographs, documents,
artifacts, etc. should have labels with brief descriptions about each piece. She felt that
this would bring much more interest to the visitors. Other Committee members agreed
that this was a good idea.

she will be working on scanning photographs, doing open house press releases, recruit

Byers could do the one on Businesses in Euless; Mr. Nail could do one on the Post Office,
Mrs. Fuller on the Himes Log House, etc. Mr. Clark and the Committee were agreeable to
having the event. Staff will work out the details and report back to the Committee.
